Common Questions and Answers about What is depo provera used for

depo-provera

Avatar f tn Quick question... which Depo are you on? There are two kinds, that I'm aware of: Depo Provera or Depo Lupron. I had tried the Provera when I was about 16 for about a year. I had to stop because I could not handle the side effects any longer. I did spot for about 3 months. It usually takes a few months for your system to get used to it. The Lupron stops your period completely and basically puts your body into menopause, which is the one I am currently on.
327405 tn?1223239755 My OBGYN prescribed me Prometrium - a progesterone supplement because he said I wasn't ovulating and this would help. He said if this didn't work then he would put me on birth control for 2 months because that would help also. Well the Prometrium (I took for 12 nights in a row) ended up working and I got pregnant with the ovulation that occured right after taking the Prometrium. I don't know what provera is (depo?), but you might want to ask him about that.
Avatar f tn Depo Provera { Started 5/20/2010, Last Shot 2/9/2012 } Before I started getting the Depo Provera Injections I always had a normal, slightly heavy period. Minimal cramping. After taking Depo Provera for 1 year I finally lost my periods.
730465 tn?1281609918 I've been having Migraines everyday now and I don't know what causes the migraines? I drink like 1 -2 cups of coffee a day and I'm on the depo provera shot and recently had a baby 3 months ago. I 've never had migrianes like these ones. Should I tell my doctor before i know the causes the migaines or after?
494555 tn?1228504371 ve never used depo provera, but I have heard that it can take a few months before your cycles get back to normal. Although it sounds like you're already there :-) Good luck to you!
746098 tn?1232912961 If you are taking depo-provera i would seriously recommend you stop using this asap. I had the same symptoms as yourself and was diagnosed with depression, i wasn't depressed it was the side effects of the depo -provera. Also if you do ever plan on having kids it could take up to years after coming off of this pill for your body to regulate. I regret ever taking this for of contraception as my body is still completely messed up. Hope this helps!!
Avatar n tn What is the best way to do this? Everyone talks about the Depo Provera, but what is the side effects and would this by any chance bring problems in the near future when we want to concieve a baby?
Avatar f tn I think I can help you out. So depo provera, the shot, is made up of the hormone Progesterone. Progesterone is used by the woman's body to build up our endometerium, the lining of the uterus which is shed off during one's period. By taking depo provera you are consistently having the hormone progesterone released in your body for 3 months. Increasing the intake of this hormone in your body can cause prolonged periods and heavy spotting.
Avatar f tn I came off the depo provera 15months ago and did not get a cycle, so the drs did the hormone checks, scans and iternal checks and said all is ok but perscribed provera 10mg 3 times a day for 10 days, althought gt my perscription wrong so first dose 10mg 3x for 7 days. AF came 8 days later light but thought due to not having bleeding for a long time, second round i took the 10 days came on 9 days later even lighter stopped after 2.5days back on for a hour here and there till now day 6......
Avatar f tn I had used Depo for 3 years and never had any issues. I didnt gain wait, or anything. The only minor side effects I did have was mild cramping after the shot, and headaches. Although once I got off depo that was different. My hair started to fall out, I gained weight, headaches were worse and so on. This pregnancy happened 2 months after being off birth control completely, and while hubby had a vesectomy. So the only real birth control i think is no sex.....
Avatar m tn Hi there, Depo vera is injected every 12 weeks while the contraceptive has the power to prevent conception up to 14 weeks, the injections are usually given every 12 weeks to ensure that there is no gap in the effectiveness of the birth control between shots. If such a schedule is maintained, pregnancy while on Depo-Provera is extremely rare. Since your girlfriend was not on taking it regularly there might have been a period when she had sex while not on depo.
Avatar n tn It actually took me over another year after my period returned before, I finally became pregnant. The depo-provera shot is extremely effective. So much so, that it actually is a bad choice of contraceptive if you actually want to get pregnant within 2 years of the shot, because it takes that long for your body to return to normal. If you are still unsure, ask her doctor.
Avatar n tn I'm 19 and ive been on the depo provera shot for about 3 weeks and my period pains are excruciating and i have had it for about 2 weeks now. whats going on!
Avatar f tn m a 19 year old female who was on the Depo Provera shot from summer of 2013 until last November. The depo shot completely took away my periods and even when I quit it in November I didn't get a period until July 2nd of this year. This period was a pretty normal one. Lighter flow than I used to have and it lasted until the 6th of July. Since then I have not had a period. I have taken multiple pregnancy tests, and I always get a negative result. I always have protected sex.
Avatar f tn This risk is more likely for those who have been taking it for longer than two years, particularly when other risk factors for osteoporosis exist, such as family history and chronic alcohol and/or tobacco use. Although there are no studies to benefit its use, it is advised that all women on Depo-Provera get adequate calcium and Vitamin D (through diet and/or supplements) to help prevent osteoporosis.
Avatar m tn I just got a shot of depo-provera birth control 3 days ago and my period was supposed to start yesterday and it hasn't. I am sexually active and the last time I had sex was on my period last month and we used condoms but I wasn't on birth control and my partner did not go all the way. I just went to the GYN and got my annual pelvic exam and my first shot of depo and so far everything has been okay.
Avatar f tn However there is a supposed two week window in which Depo-Provera is supposed to be effective and that window ended October 8th, so just a few weeks ago. However, I got back on birth control 4 days after this two week window ended on October 12th. The doctor advised me to use a condom in the first week and I go ahead like an airhead and have sex that SAME day, unprotected. While my fiance used the 'pull-out' ' method knowing basic biology, it is still possible to get pregnant.
Avatar f tn I know I will have light bleeding on the Depo Provera, but is it normal to be bleeding for 37 days? I have not felt like myself lately and I am having trouble doing my everyday activities.
Avatar m tn I am wondering if the Depo shot is the right choice for me? I have never had a regular period and have used bc pills before but now with working three part-time jobs I find it hard to remember where I put my keys let alone to take a pill. I have read what feels like hundreds of stories about the Depo shot and how people have bleed all year with it, or have some of the side effects that the FDA said are pretty uncommon? I am 33 yrs old not children and don't plan on having any.
Avatar f tn When I was 16 I got on the depo cause I've heard great things about it and even the drs. said it'd be the best for me because I had major migraines where I would see flashing lights and every part of my body would go numb, the said it was due to my menstral cycle. So I started the depo and I had a period for 2 months one HUGE migraine for 3 days and the everything stopped, Well I have given birth to 2 kids and I wasn't on the depo after the first so this is new to me.
Avatar f tn Recently, Me and My Boyfriend had un-protected sex.. and afterwards i started bleeding. we haven't had sex in a week, what could time be a sign of.. I am on Depo Provera-the birth control shot?
902536 tn?1326914250 m still not pregnant and i was on depo-provera for 2 and a half years.
Avatar n tn I would go into a OBGYN speak with them about the mood swings and bleeding- there is medication to balance it out, as long as estrogen is not alone in a medicaton it is used. Many oral birth controls have progesterone and estrogen combined to lesssen the effects of possible cancer later. There are medications and procedures that will accomadate your lifestyle, just trial and error. Good luck.
Avatar n tn l was on the Depo provera for the past 6months.My last injection expired on the 4th of november 2008 and l did not go for onether dose because l want to get pregnant. l have been bleeding eversince ( 4 november ) and the bleedings vary. Sometimes its spooting or light to heavy bleeding.and am expriencing low abdorminal pains ( cramps ) and bach pain. Blood is sometimes brownish in colour. Neausea is also a problem .
Avatar f tn If you were using Depo-Provera it may take longer for your cycles to return to normal. Keep in mind that Depo-Provera is designed to be a long-lasting form of birth control. Even though it is intended to help you avoid pregnancy for up to three months, it may actually prevent pregnancy longer. Depo-Provera is a synthetic hormone similar to progesterone.
