Amoxicillin is a penicillin type of antibiotic and Avelox is a quinilone. Different mechanisms of action but both antiobitics used to treat bacterial infections. Quinilones are used less frequently for sure due to some side effect issues and warnings about the class of drugs. Check with your doctor if you have any concerns but they are definately not the same thing.
Often antibiotics have little niches that they are used in.

I have simple partial seizures and was on xanax on an "as needed" basis to control some nervousness about going back to college. I was on it for about 2 months. I started realizing I got less of my sensory and motor seizures which have always been uncontrollable since I started getting them back in 2000.
I will have periods of a day or two (usually after seeing my acupuncturist) where the pain will get a little better but nearly every day I have debilitating pain and my lower extremities which causes me to limp and is giving me lower back pain. I can't figure out why, a year after taking the medication, my joints don't appear to be getting any better or healing at all.
Yes Avelox is very strong that's why he told me to stop it... Shortness of breath episodes are getting little better. Doctors think I'm having anxiety attacks, which could be true cause I have been stressed a lot. I'll give it some time and hope for the best.
I think I may be another victim. Trying to figure out what the heck is wrong w/ me. Took Cipro and the sinus pain was not improved so that was follwed by a course of Avelox where I ended up in the ER by day 7 on it [couldn't walk on my own needed IV fluids]. Off it for a week now and still really tired, various nerve pain, joint pain, muscle fatigue...
If you have taken any of these drugs, do you remember if you took them before or after you developed cardiac symptoms. I am wondering if my cardiac symptoms are due to taking Avelox for a sinus infection. If you do need an antibioitic make sure that your doctor does not prescribe any of these drugs. They are associated with a number of devastating reactions.
Thursday my female 10 lb. 2 year old Japanes chin was lethargic and not eating. She was givin Reglan and Pepcid at the clinic. Friday still lethargic not eating and had a fever. Friday she had blood work and xrays. Everything was normal except slightly anemic. Also a questionable gas pattern and a dark area in the stomach on xray. was given fluids, baytril injection, and ampicillan injection. Went home with bayrtil prescribed once a day and probiotic, still on pepcid.
But in recent years it has become more and more painful and varying degrres of treatment have been used trying to clear it up. First i tried using Zinc based creams(A+D ointment) to treat the area, later antibotics (Keflex, Avelox, Augemintin), steroids, and anti-fungals (OTC creams, nystatin cream, Nizoral 200 mg x 14 days). None of these work, the best effect was the nystatin cream but it only seemed to treat the symptoms but the rash only seems to get worse.

After two days of suffering ithcing in my urethra, followed by a frequent urge to urinate, I began to take some left over Avelox (400 mg) that I had on hand. Trust me, I know this was dumb. 36 hours after I began taking the Avelox (one dose on Friday night at 5:30 pm and one on Saturday at 5:00 pm) I had a swab for gonorrhea and chlamydia (1:45 pm on Sunday). The test results just came back negative. Is it possible that the Avelox ruined the test results?
I cut my 4th toe with a powewasher (ouch) 3-4 days ago and i was given a 3 day course of avelox and antiobiotic creme to put on my cut toe. It is currently senstive to the touch, but not extremely painful. In addition, it does not feel warm. Is the redness surrounding the cut normal, or do i need to go back to the doctor?
also been on the avelox a week now and still have a week to go, but infection is just getting worse. have been making sure not to take any dairy or other minerals with it, 8 hrs before or 4 hrs after taking it. doc told me to take my omeprazole every day for my acid reflux (which i haven't had any problems with in quite a while) because she thought my acid reflux might be causing all of this to be worse and making my asthma flare up.
Your initial illness sounds like non-gonococcal urethritis which can be caused by numerous bacteria but is most commonly due to chlamydia (up to 40% of the time). You were treated with the therapy recommended by the CDC (azithromycin, 1.0 gram) and then when your symptoms continued were treated with recommended therapy for persistent NGU (the metronidazole was for possible trichomonas). It sounds as though your symptoms are improved but not entirely gone.
