Common Questions and Answers about What foods have omega 3 in it

omega-3

Avatar f tn Taking a supplement is fine. Plenty of foods besides fish have omegas. And omega 6 and 9 are also important.
Avatar n tn I am not sure of your question. Are you asking where omega 3 and omega 6 foods come from? Omegas 3 / 6 are polyunsaturated oils that help lower cholesterol and help prevent blood platelets from clotting blood vessel walls. The best source is fish especially mackerel, tuna, salmon, and lake trout. Fish should be eaten 2-3 times a week. Omega 3 are found in whole nuts, soy nuts / oil, and canola oil. Recommend 1-2 teaspoons of nuts daily. Hope this answered your question.
Avatar f tn re tiny seeds that have very little taste and can easily be put in almost any food. I put 1/2 tsp in my cereal or yogurt once a day and now have all the Omega-3 I need without the expensive pills or having to worry about whether I'm eating enough fish. It also costs alot less - last weekend I paid only $1.19 for 1/2 lb. that should last at least a month. If you research it, they are the best source for non-fish Omega-3, even better than walnuts (and less fattening).
Avatar m tn t just one substance, Omega three are fatty acids just like Omega 6 fatty acids found in oils and meat etc. Omega 3 are EPA, DHA, and ALA . Some experts have said that the balance between Omega 6 fatty acids and Omega 3 is key, but just as many say this is nonsense. Omega 3 do have benefits, mainly reducing inflammation in the body, such as in the arteries or joints. It can also reduce your clotting factor if taken in too high doses, causing excessive bleeding.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Omega 3 supplements everyday my entire pregnancy and Dr's highly recommend it, there are numerous studies that talk aboutthe benefits of Omega 3 and very few that talk about risks associated with pregnancy. I am 5 months pregnant and my baby is very healthy so far. The risks associated are from fish oil that comes from contaminated fish. You should look for supplements that are "distilled" from contaminants.
Avatar f tn My doc recommends a prenatal vitamin for everyone and omega 3 if u have less than 3 servings of fish each week.

Avatar f tn You should be taking omega 3 in any case. Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
Avatar f tn m open to new info if you have it. What is true is that the Omega 3 in flax seed oil is different from that in fish oil, and flax seed oil contains more than just omega 3 oils, whereas most fish oil is artificially purified to eliminate many other beneficial oils that would also be a fish.

Avatar n tn Unfortunately, each side effect would occur in conjunction with some other change in my health/lifestyle so it was hard to detect or pinpoint what the cause of my problem was. This recent condition is no exception. My ankles began to swell on a regular basis and has been attributed to the medication. When I started taking the Omega 3, I already had experienced some swelling of the ankles, but a week later, my eyelids started to get puffy and developed a rash.

Avatar n tn While all children with ADHD are not deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, we believe that the addition of omega-3 fatty acids to the diet may be important for some ADHD children. In fact, studies show that children whose treatment program includes only medication, educational and psychological therapy continue to be at high risk for vandalism, petty crime, frequency of alcoholic intoxication, and possession of marijuana.
Avatar n tn Take fish oil capsules which contain omega-3 oils, these are known to block cholesterol formation in bile. Monosaturated fats in small amounts may be taken. Best luck and regards!
Avatar f tn Both are essential fatty acids but you want more Omega 3 than Omega 6. Avoid processed seed and vegetable oils high in Omega-6 such as sunflower, corn, soybean and cottonseed oils. The types of omega-3s called DHA and EPA, have the strongest health benefits. The best food source of both DHA and EPA is cold water fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, mackeral, tuna. You can also take Omega 3 supplements.

Avatar m tn Exercise helps keep that HDL (your happy cholesterol) level up, as well as eating certain foods, such a pistachios and certain plant sterols (they make a buttery spread with these in it) can help. Eating foods rich in the good omega fatty acids, such as omega 3 is good for your blood vessels also.... things like freshwater fish, flaxseed meal, walnuts, macadamias, almonds, and pumpkin seeds.
Avatar f tn Avoid foods that contain saturated and Trans fats as they raise LDL cholesterol and damage your blood vessels. Nuts, fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in changing your LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio. Adopt lifestyle changes. Exercise daily and avoid smoking and alcohol ingestion. These all will help. Do keep me posted. Best luck and regards!
Avatar f tn From what I have read, some studies shows it helps but other shows it doesn't. In some of the studies I looked at it says it helps with the depression and just in general. In another study I read it said that it could be activating if you take too much. So what I did was ask my doctor and he said to take a low dose. I was taking 1 pill of 750 mg every other day, but I often forget to take it.
