Common Questions and Answers about What are the throat exercises for sleep apnea

throat

Avatar f tn Hi Doctor, Thank you for your response. I had my consultation with the sleep apnea specialist and have a sleep study in the next 1 - 2 months. He thinks if I had apnea it is most likely mild and not severe. I don't have the typical sleep apnea characteristics with the exception that my jaw is very retracted and tongue restricted and my throat is very restricted. This he thinks would contribute to some apnea and that the sleep study should be able to determine some answers.
Avatar n tn I figured out that the problem was that the nasel spray they told me to use was constantly burning the inside of my nose and throat so I had stopped using it and in my sleep when the pressure built up in my sinuses, I would remove the tube. I have 4 different attachments and tried them all. I am realizing just now that I never retried the nasel spray but it burned all the way into my throat and was as bad as acid reflux.
Avatar n tn In another form of the disorder, central apnea, both oral breathing and throat and abdominal breathing efforts are simultaneously interrupted. In a third type of apnea, mixed apnea, a brief period of central apnea is followed by a longer period of obstructive apnea. Sleep apnea can be recognized by a number of symptoms. Loud and intermittent snoring is one warning signal.
Avatar f tn t they do CT/MRI/PET scans WHILE the person is sleeping to see EXACTLY what is obstructing the throat. I know there are machines that can see how someone swallows using video, why not use that for sleep apnea sufferers to correct the actual problem?? I don't think that soft pallet tissue & tonsils will solve the problem itself. If that were the case, I'd probably still be able to breathe through my nasal airway and not have a problem except for the snoring.
Avatar f tn Hi, welcome to the forum, firstly you need to rule out the cause of sleep apnea. Obesity and upper airway soft tissue abnormalities are known risk factor and smoking multiplies the risk by 3 times. Even alcoholism, nasal congestion, craniofacial abnormalities, hypothyroidism, acromegaly, and adenotonsillar hypertrophy can lead to such symptoms. Hence, the above mentioned conditions should be ruled out by physical examinations, thyroid profile and other blood tests.
1571776 tn?1296348020 thanks for the help...so I guess us with back pain we are back painarians??? JUST KIDDING...a little levity.
Avatar m tn So, you could have obstructive sleep apnea and this is diagnosed with a sleep study. As you wait for your evaluation, you could avoid taking alcohol and quit smoking and try to sleep on your side as this keeps the airways patent. If any nasal blocks try to keep them patent with OTC nasal decongestants. And aim for optimum weight with exercises or long walks. Good Luck. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn The muscle tone of the body ordinarily relaxes during sleep and at the level of the throat the human airway is composed of collapsible walls of soft tissue which can obstruct breathing during sleep. Mild, occasional sleep apnea, such as many people experience during an upper respiratory infection may not be important, but chronic, severe obstructive sleep apnea requires treatment to prevent sleep deprivation and other complications”. 1282280 tn?1285086420 you just cant fall asleep?? or what?? if you fall asleep and just cant stay can be sleep apnea i know this is a shot in the dark..im apnea its hell..
Avatar f tn I still will go ahead with my sleep apnea consultation. I still am puzzled by the conflicting advice by the jaw specialist and the sleep apnea. I appreciate your response especially the mention of an inexpensive low-tech boil and bite models for snoring - any particular types?
Avatar f tn While you are waiting for a doctor to figure this out for you, if it is sleep apnea, it may help to elevate the head of your bed a few inches and sleep only on your side or stomach (stay off your back). Not a cure, but positions you in a way some with sleep apnea do a little better. Also, sedatives and alcohol are best avoided if one has untreated apnea. If you find that's not your issue, you can go back to whatever is comfortable and usual for you.
Avatar f tn How are you? People with sleep apnea are deprived of oxygen due to a complete blockage of airways, which can have a major impact on health. Snoring does often accompany sleep apnea, but just because you snore does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa. Minor sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies such as losing weight, eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives; sleeping on your side, and regularizing your sleep hours.
Avatar n tn Reflux- stomach acid can enter the upper wind pipe.An ENT can scope the the throat and upper larynx in office-- quick, painless and definitive 2- Sinusitis 3- Post nasal drip.
1781134 tn?1315774324 Considering your symptoms of wakefulness with gasping for breath after sleeping, it is most likely that you may be having Obstructive Sleep Apnea. When a person sleeps the airways are usually patent allowing normal passage for air entry. The upper airway that is at the region of the tongue and the soft palate is the most compliant (soft) part. So, this is liable to collapse and cause airway obstruction.
Avatar f tn Sleep apnea affects the way you breathe when you’re sleeping. A person who has sleep apnea pauses breathing breifly during sleep. These breathing pauses typically last between 10 to 20 seconds and can occur up to hundreds of times a night. It happens when the soft tissue in the back of your throat relaxes during sleep causing a blockage in the airway. Please see your doctor to discuss the symptoms you have been displaying.
Avatar f tn About the sleep apnea - unless you had substantial good sleep in all stages and some time in REM while supine, a sleep study negative for obstructive sleep apnea may not be conclusive. Look at your copy of the report and see what it says about arousals, especially any associated with limb movements. Maybe you didn't sleep enough to exhibit the apneas on this particular night.
Avatar f tn OFF ALL THE RESEARCH THEY WENT TO THE MOON BUT CANNOT FIND A SIMPLE CURE FOR THE SLEEP APNEA PEOPLE WHO ARE SUFFERING BECAUSE SOMEBODY WHO DOES NOT HAVE SLEEP APNEA DOES NOT NOW HOW IT FEELS NOT TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP NORMALLY.ITS HELL AND OFCORSE WHAT DOCTORS DOT SAY TO THE PATIENTS THAT THEY HAVE A SHORT TIME TO LIVE BECAUSE OF A STROKE HEART ATTACK ,AND SUDDEN DEATH.
Avatar n tn s been quite a lot of info out lately about kids diagnosed as ADHD or even having behavioral or learning problems actually having sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is associated with increased risk for cardiac disease, Type 2 Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. Oxygen deprivation to the brain can cause severe morning headaches, and possibly even brain damage when oxygen levels get too low.
539750 tn?1226521677 Hi, from your history it suggests that you are having Sleep-disordered breathing. It is important to rule out type of sleep apnea like Obstructive apnea, Central apnea and Mixed apnea. You need to undergo tests to rule out the type of apnea. Few of the tests include Apnea index, Apnea-hypopnea index, Respiratory disturbance index, Desaturation and Arousal index.
Avatar m tn i was diagnosed with sleep apnea after sleep studies was done and i do not snore at all but i do snort from it
1615999 tn?1307461942 I would think an autopsy in this case would more likely pinpoint if there was a stroke or a heart attack, but not be able to unequivocally attribute the crisis to sleep apnea. The question for those of us with parents with obstructive sleep apnea is whether it is genetic, as in a familial tendency toward a jaw or throat structure that tends to narrowing of the airway.
Avatar f tn One reason I think it might work for him is the hole in the back of his throat is literally only about the size of a nickel. So, removing those excess tissues might help him.
