Hi, my psychiatrist just put me on Wellbutrin, and Topamax as a mood stabilizer. I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the Topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.
I am taking citalopram, wellbutrin and phentermine My weight is going up and I am sweating all the time. is it because of this combo of meds? What can I take for weight loss?.
I got back on wellbutrin and have managed to lose 42 lbs since the first of the year. My diet and exercise routine are the key to weight loss and the initial weight gain.
Speak with your doctor about making some diet and exercise changes, have your thyroid looked at. Try that and let me know whats happening. Best of luck.
Your doctor is right. Wellbutrin at 450 mg already has 4 times the risk for seizures as other antidepressants, and the risk goes up by another 10 times if you increase to 600 mg (see http://www.rxlist.com/wellbutrin-drug/warnings-precautions.htm).
One option might be to try topamax. It's used off label as a mood stabilizer, it's an anticonvulsant (lowers seizure risk), and tends to cause weight loss. It doesn't work mood wise for everyone though, and not everyone loses weight.
I am currently on Wellbutrin and Lexapro. I was having much difficulty losing weight so I went to a Weight Loss Clinic, where they perscribed phentermine, hydrochlorthiazide and a fiber pill with calcium. I was wondering how dangerous this is and if I could/should stop my antidressant/anxiety medications abruptly or ween myself of them while I am on the weight loss pills.
I just saw a new doctor and he believes the Citalopram is causing my weight gain. I have been on it for about 18 months. I am now taking half a pill of Citalopram in order to wean myself off of it. My doctor then prescribed me Bupropion HCL (take twice a day). He says that should help with weight loss. Has anyone had good experiences with Bupropion? Did you gain weight on Citalopram? Thanks!!!
ve done a LOT of research on anti-depressants/anti-anxiety drugs and weight gain/weight loss. To answer your question, it can be both. Weight gain only happens in about 25% of people taking antidepressant meds. This can be due to feeling better/enjoying food more and/or from changes in metabolism/appetite as a side effect of the meds.
He gave me a Prescription for Wellbutrin, will this help with the weight loss? Will I be able to the weight or does it permanently change your metabolism?Now that I am over weight it is not helping with my self image. I do feel I need some medication to help with my anxiety is this a good choice? Are the side effects minimal?

The side effects were the ones you mentioned- weight gai and loss of interest sexually. Also I have chronic sinusitis and she mentioned to me that in some cases people's antidepressants actually exasperated their sinus issues-thus the switch.
In the past 3 months I have also changed my diet to much healthier whole, real foods in an effort to get healthier and lose weight. I've lost 17 pounds so far and I had hoped the switch to wellbutin might possibly help with my weight loss too.
And I'm not suggesting it won't work for you -- just to keep your doc up on telling you why he or she chooses the particular meds so you know if your doc knows independently what he or she is doing and thinking about it. Because if it does work, my primitive understanding is that wellbutrin is one of the easier ones to take and come off of for most people.
About 5 months ago my doctor put me on citalopram which made me feel like a zombie and I started gaining weight so we decided to switch to the wellbutrin. I have been on the wellbutrin for about 7 weeks now and off the citalopram for a little over 1 week. Im having a completely different experience than I did before. No dry mouth or weight loss instead headaches, ringing in my ears, clenched jaw, continued weight gain and irritability.
Wellbutrin is more stimulating than Lexapro, so it causes less weight gain and less loss of libido. Doesn't mean it's a weight loss aid, just means it doesn't promote weight gain the way ssris do with some people because it doesn't slow the metabolism. The weight loss should come over time if you stay off the ssris, assuming the wellbutrin is working for you as an antidepressant.
Wellbutrin can be one of the more stimulating antidepressants and can actually cause weight loss in some people so I would'nt worry much about that. This med may very well help you again. I would also recommend therapy to help with your depression and the losses you've had.
So, I have been recovering for a really bad bout with anorexia for quite a long time now, and I can say that I am feeling great food-wise! I have been weight restored for almost a year and I never miss a meal. I had anorexia for years, but like I said, it is absolutely not present anymore! But, I am struggling quite a bit with depression. I have researched a lot about various deficiencies, mainly serotonin and dopamine.
I am on Wellbutrin for the last 4 weeks and have lost 5 lbs. The way I can describe it is, I don't feel like I'm starving when I get hungry. It takes away that feeling for me. I still eat, but I eat less and feel fuller sooner.

I currently take topamax (100 mg) and I should be on 3 instead of one. Any more than 1 and I get shaking fits at night.
And anything out of the ordinary for your body can increase bp. So yeah your migraine could.
Have you ever heard of being water drunk? It's odd sounding but from what I remember when you were on the IV, your symptoms kinda sounded like it. It's not often diagnosed because it looks like dehydration.
Do your own research, but apparently you can take both together. I have taken Wellbutrin and my husband does for bipolar (him) and we did not gain wt. on it. It just did not work for me, so I switched to Lexapro. It helped me in less than a week. I have been on it for several years and actually lost wt. while on it. I was actively trying to lose wt. and had no problems doing it while taking the Lexapro.
I only noticed a small drop in weight loss, because I was already at a desired weight to begin with and I try not to lose weight as for me, losing weight would be unhealthy. If I find myself losing weight, I try to counteract it... so, for me, the weight loss was minima (5 to 10 pounds at the most).
But, I have had friends who have lost quite a bit of weight on topamax. It usually takes about three months before full results are seen.
That is very odd that you're gaining from wellbutrin. I would certainly talk to your doc about that. Everyone reacts differently but I haven't heard of weight gain, but weight loss! Wellbutrin completely took away my appetite and made me nauseated so I did end up losing some. but thankfully that all went away and it has definitely provided me with more energy.
