Common Questions and Answers about Wellbutrin and effexor for weight loss

effexor

With Wellbutrin there are a number things good for. For example, weight loss, stop smoking, anxiety, sex drive. There are different types of Wellbutrin as well, there is SR and XL.
Hi, I have been on Effexor XR for 3 years and I have gained about 40-50pounds, most when my dose was increased to 225, now I am on 75mg b/c I'm getting ready to wean off the medicine in a couple of weeks, and I haven't lost anything yet. My eating habits have not changed and I exercise. I have always been underweight and I could eat whatever I wanted...I'm only 26 years old...I know my metabolism has changed some, but not enough to pack on 40 pounds.
Wellbutrin XL 150mg works really well for me for two weeks of the month, and then I drop into a really bad pre-menstrual cycle of hopelessness, moodiness, rage even. I'm planning to ask a doctor about upping my meds for those two weeks. The thing is, for the two weeks it's working, Wellbutrin is really great. No side effects for me at all. No weight loss, unfortunately, but I didn't gain either (been on it for over a year now). And my libido is much stronger.
My husband das been diagnosed with depression and anxiety had been taking Effexor XR 75mgs or about 1 year however the side effects ie weight gain tiredness and loss of libido was troubling him. The switched to cymbaltor, due to high costs (even with insurance) of this medication is wanting to switch to somethig that is less expensive and that has a generic available. What about Wellbutrin or do you have any other suggeations?
I was on Wellbutrin with the effexor at one point and it did not help the weight. I got very aggressive with my weight at one point and changed my eating. I lost over 20lbs. The serotonin and norepenephrine make you crave the carb/sugar because they fluctuate. Even if you choose 'healthy' foods the body converts the sugars from fruit etc into fat. Sooo, my strategy was to keep the metabolism even with protein. I kept the fruit component for snacks but eliminated yogurt, milk etc.
Wellbutrin will not magically remove the 45 pounds. Wellbutrin does not induce weight loss, it simply doesn't cause weight gain. A proper diet and appropriate exercise are needed. Remember, it took 8 months to gain the weight, it will take time. Best Wishes, HFHS M.D.
Hey, i'm sure there has been alot of posts regarding this topic but I really wanted to ask for myself. Has anyone who's takin wellbutrin noticed any weight gain (and can say this weight gain was most likey caused by the wellbutrin)? I've been taking wellbutrin for about 2 weeks and have noticed my weight loss (i'm on a diet) has come to a near hault.
I have been treated for anxiety with xanax for almost 10 years now and prescribed to take as needed not to exceed a certain amount daily. About three years ago my doc put me on Wellbutrin 150 mg per day to help me stop smoking cigarettes, up until this point I didn't realize I was depressed. After about two weeks on the Wellbutrin I felt great.
I was on anti depressants for 8 years but I felt like I got more mood swings, weight gain, and loss of sex drive on everyone of them. Finally I was on effexor for 3 years and I decided to come off because I felt like they were doing worse than better for me. I've been off of effexor for 23 days now and I wake up EVERY morning at the same exact time, sweating, nautious, anxious, and I run to the bathroom with loose bowels. I've been starting every morning like this every day since I came off.
After being on welbutrin for 2 months I had lost 25lbs. I was suprised and happy with the weight loss and energy. However, I couldn't sleep at night and started feeling like my heart was skipping a beat or maybe having an extra one everyday. My blood pressure and pulse were crazy high compared to what they normally were and at times I literally felt sick at the sight of meat on my plate. (Weird, I know).
I am seriously considering coming off all together- I exercise 5 days a week- 45 minutes of cardio and 45 minutes of weight training and still no weight loss! What other choices do we have? there must be something! Has anyone tried to go the natural route? Is there a natrual route?
Have taken paxil, celexa, effexor, xanax, and lexapro through the years but experienced weight gain of at least 40 lbs. My OB/GYN helped wean me off the meds this past spring but within the last month I have again started experiencing severe anxiety with bouts of depression. Family doc started me on Trazadone which just made me feel like a zombie and shortly after switched me to Wellbutrin 150mg daily.
I have been on Effexor 150mg for 2 years and my weight gain is disgusting. I am 40 years old and was never bigger than a size 2 and now i am a size 8 and feel very undesireable. I am now on my 3rd day off of effexor and am feeling the side effects (not fun) but hopefully worth it. How long does it take for the weight to start coming off?
I have been on a combination of effexor xr and wellbutrin for about three months. I am 57 yrs old and have suffered with major depression/anxiety since 14 yrs of age. I am grateful for the newer antidepressants and benos . My hope is that the goverment and other bodies will be able to continue the search for more effective treatments...regarding the sexual issue at 57 i have sown my "wild oats", been married and have a 19 year old daughter thats the "apple of my eye".
If depression has already caused you to lose weight, and if further weight loss would be detrimental to your health, Wellbutrin may not be the best antidepressant for you.
But, I am seriously contemplating asking my MD to prescribe Topamax for me for weight loss. I think maybe my blood pressure will also decrease, and I am sure my feet and joints won't hurt anymore if I can get this extra 60 lbs off me. As I said, I am 66 years young, and am interested if any other young seniors are in my shoes. Any comments for the older group will be greatly appreciated.
I am on 500 mg and it has done nothing for weight loss. It actually constipated me for the first few days and gave me heartburn and chest pain. I don't know if that is normal or not. My doctor says I am insulin resistant and he thinks this will help me loss weight. Should I ask to increase it? Or is it to soon?
I have been on Wellbutrin for depression and Seroquel for sleep for about two weeks now. I have lost some weight from the depression and from taking Wellbutrin. The weight loss is about 20lbs. Will I regain my appetite or will I continue to have a lousy appetite? Also I have had several crying jags in the second week of this medication. Is this normal to have these? Sometimes I have about three of them a day? I told my psychiatrist and he said everyone cries is that bad?
Well on welbutrin my anxity got very bad so I went to a walk in clinic and the Dr perscribed me effexor and a few XANAX to help while I wait for the Effoxor to work. I went to pick them up and could not afford the effexor. I dont want to get it if its going to hender my weight loss. He told me it helped people lose weight. From what I see on line that is not what people say. PLEASE give me your opinion. If I find out I dont want to risk gaining the weight back what do I do?
I have been off Effexor for 3 weeks now and cannot lose the weight I gained while being on it. I am desperate for any information that you may have to get it off. I can't fit into any of my clothes and can't afford to buy new ones, nor do I want to! So not only am I dealing with the withdrawals but also the severe depression of feeling like a fat slob! I work out every day and eat pretty well.....nothing seems to help....
I'm a 32y old woman and I'm trying to quit smoking so my husband and I can try to have a baby. I've been taking 300mg Wellbutrin for 6 wks and have been quit for 29 days. Before I quit I was quite happy with life, family, marriage, job. I am now a complete trainwreck! I went the first week with one hour sleep. I then started taking 1 mg of Lorazepam, a friends scrip, out of desperation.
Proper weight loss starts slowly and you will start to notice more weight loss more quickly as you get healthier. Good luck!
If you are getting the results you want from Effexor, you probably don't want to switch. The reports of weight gain for this medication are not that great, in fact, loss of appetite is more frequent. Weight gain can happen with any of them, so watch it closely and only switch if it really starts to happen. Then be careful to taper off over a two period, because a rebound from precipitous cessation, is possible and would be uncomfortable.
As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above. It is unclear why anti-depressants cause weight gain. Here are some possibilities: • Overeating, as a result of depression, can cause weight gain, esp if the person had lost weight in the pretreated depression • Most anti-depressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics are also anti-histamines.
Upon experiencing significant difficulty with depression and fatigue, a few years later, some different medications were prescribed to address these issues--first Celexa, then Effexor. I have been on Effexor for depression and fatigue for about two years now. I insisted on switching to something other than Celexa, because I seemed to be gaining weight with it, although it worked well on the depression. My doctor assured me that Effexor would NOT cause weight gain.
I made this combo by reading the forum and eliminating weight gain meds, and introduce less weight gain meds but with same aim to treat. Please help, I need advice.
my doctor just took me off of effexor and put me on citalopram. have been on effexor for about 5 years, just doesn't seem to be working anymore.
I do have a diagnosis of extreme depression/extreme anxiety. So, anyhow, after trying Phentermine, (still hungry on that) I stopped that, and the other night I was watching public telelvision, and a Dr. Adnan was on and he talked of the 'brain types' of overeaters. I am a combo of impulsive/compulsive. Then he started talking about the natural supplements that would help, since I have antidepressants, add meds and thyroid meds, I wonder if it is just a matter or adding wellbutrin to my effexor.
I really do not want to do # 3 because Effexor is helping me out so much, minus the weight loss and night sweats of course. I much rather like the idea of stepping down to 75 Effexor and then adding the Paxil, but is this acceptable ? Or would this cause a bad reaction ? Please, any help and answers will be greatly appreciated. Also, he said that if the Paxil worked as well for me as the Effexor, then he would give me a script for it to replace the Effexor. Thanks a lot !
Also, i just to hear about others who are being treated for anxiety and how it works for you...my primary put me on wellbutrin today. For perhaps his sanity as well as mine... I have not really addressed anxiety but I am such a wreck.. MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!!
