Welchol used for diarrhea

Common Questions and Answers about Welchol used for diarrhea

welchol

401016 tn?1201451802 I would assume they're giving you welchol for diarrhea and the Ami for GI spasms. This is a combination that is given to many (or combinations like it) when someone is experiencing unexplained abdominal pain (perhaps due to spasms) and diarrhea. Ami is used fairly frequently in GI problems, so don't consider it a 'head med.' It is, but in this case it's probably being used to work on the receptors in your GI tract - not your head, although it will do that, too.
Avatar n tn One of the most popular drugs used for this purpose is Questran (Cholestyramine), it dows the same as Welchol. The problem probably is that you are sometimes having too much bile in your system. When this happens, it moves quickly to the large intestine where it acts as a laxitive causing diarrhea.
Avatar f tn I have an answer for you. I too had my GB out, and soon after had the same symptoms. I DIAGNOSED IT myself....not much initial help from the gastro MD. It is called "biliary diarrhea". It's fairly common, surprisingly. Apparantly has no reflection on the quality of the surgery (I had the short cut method). However, good news: I've beern able to control it, for which I do give gastro MD credit....The cholesterol drug Welchol. Without it I'd be housebound!
Avatar n tn I have found that a old cure for this type of problem that a Aunt has used for years is simple flour and water. I mix 2 tsps of plain flour in a little warm water stir till no lumps and drink it down in a gulp. Has worked wonders for me no more problem.
Avatar n tn I did not have any problems until then. I suffered with IBS for years until my Gastro doctor put me on Welchol and it is wonderful I take 3 pills a day and I can get anything I want and I don't have any IBS episodes anymore. I am not afraid to go out anywhere anymore. But I have another problem.
Avatar n tn My husband had his gall bladder removed three months ago and he still has almost daily diarrhea. He is careful with his diet and does not comsume too much fat. Does any one have any ideas on why and diet .
Avatar f tn I inject methotrexate weekly, a chemo drug that used to be used for breast cancer) and have recently started on 8 weekly infusions, as a day patient in hospital of the anti-tnfA drug, Remicade. My symptoms are back - faecal incontinence within an hour of eating, distended abdomen, blood clots in my stool,,horrific pain when I pass a motion, etc. However, having suffered with Crohn's for 40 yrs, I have almost learned to live with it.
Avatar m tn I think they have concluded that neither do Zetia, except when used with a statin, so it is the statin doing the work. I also think Welchol has been shown to not reduce cardiac events too. not sure. I am on Repatha. Third bi weekly shot. have about 1/3 of the severity of symptoms that I had on statins. headache, muscle aches. may put up with it and may not. just keepin on keepin on for now. Will see if this gets better, worse or stays the same.
Avatar n tn Track to see if the bouts of diarrhea coincide with the intake of fatty/dairy. But if the diarrhea is too continuous check to see if the doc will give her something like bentyl which will slow down the 'fast transit' through the GI tract. If that doesn't help, consider a bile-binding resin like that mentioned above, or perhaps Welchol (sp?) which can function in the same capacity.
Avatar f tn Why does your doctor prescribe Welchol for increased cholesterol? What about statins-Lipitor, Crestor? They are not advisable for people with ongoing hepatitis, but if you are SVR there should be no problem. They are much better tolerated than Wellchol.
Avatar f tn ve been on Welchol for lose to twenty years now, but now (after having thyroid gland removed due to follicular cancer at the end of last year), I'm having the exact same symptoms taking the Welchol tablets as you described (I thought it might have been dyspagia brought on by the Levothyroxine I'm forced to take now). Has anyone ever figured out what might be causing this?
Avatar f tn In the UK the doctor can order xrays and other imaging like ultrasound scans, barium meal xrays, and would refer you to a specialist for a colonoscopy and any other tests to check for problems in the digestive system. The doctor should also consider doing blood tests to check your kidney and liver function. A stool test can also be done to look for any bacteria (especially Helicobacter Pylori), parasites and any more serious problems.
Avatar n tn There is about a 5% incidence of watery diarrhea immediately following removal of the gallbladder that is thought to result from bile salt irritation in an empty GI tract. It usually responds well to resins that bind these bile salts (cholestyramine) so they can't irritate the intestine. Most commonly the intestine adapts such that these agents can be weaned off over several weeks.
Avatar n tn I'm @ 8 mos post j-pouch takedown and am still having problems with nausea, diarrhea, cramps etc.. I ,m taking lomotil and metamucil and still go 16x's /day. I had a recent bout with pouchitis and took Cipro and Flagyl (and yogurt) . The Cipro made me feel normal again and reduced frequency to 5-7 x's a day- I felt good! When I came off the Cipro the high frequency diarrhea problem returned. I go every 6 hrs at about 4 trips per.
Avatar f tn I also suffered horribly with diarrhea for about a year after, and eventually was put on Welchol to help. It also helped me to reduce the fried and fatty foods from my system.
Avatar f tn m afraid to eat, because this will produce bile, which in turn leaves me sitting on the toilet for hours. I have lost 8 pound since the surgery. The mornings are the worst, upon rising, I will go 6 - 8 times within the first hour, but it's just liquidy bile, bright yellow. I'm at my witts end...work thinks I'm a suck because this surgery has an expected recovery rate of just a few days.
268356 tn?1236002604 Have you tried getting Welchol. They are bile-binding pills prescribed by your dr. I currently take two in the morning with breakfast and two with dinner, and eat lean dinner, and low calorie foods. I find two much fatty foods and too much sugary foods set off my dumping syndrome from gallbladder surgery in 2016.
Avatar n tn 'I've battled high cholesterol for a number of years and can't find the right medicine...Lipitor caused severe muscle weakness, Zetia caused all kind of digestive problems and Pravachol zapped my energy...my count actually went up 30 points while taking WelChol! My doctor is telling me that I have no other choices of medicine to lower my count (total 285, HDL 106 VLDL 21, LDL 188, Triglycerids 106.) My sister is having the same problem so I guess this problem is a family thing.
Avatar n tn I take (2) 500mg of metformin at breakfast and supper. I also take powder welchol at supper. I would like to take my 1000mg of Januvia at bedtime to help lower my morning blood sugar readings that usually run in the 150's to 160, Any cons to taking the Januvia without food at bedtime?
Avatar f tn Thank you for your response. You mention better meds for the diarrhea. Do you have any prescription names you could give me. I am due to go back to my doctor soon. Maybe I could suggest these to her. I am really having problems with the diarrhea. It isn't safe for me to go away anywhere.
Avatar n tn My mother, age 71, had surgery for acute diverticulitis the first part of May, 2008. For the four days after surgery she was feeling fine and on the road to recovery. On the fifth day she had severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomitting. That same day, her surgeon ordered a C-scan that showed no apparent problems. She stayed in the hospital another 11 days. While the pain subsided, her nausea and vomitting did not. The doctor concluded it might be ileus. She was released on May 15.
Avatar f tn If all your tests are normal, ask your doctor to put you on Welchol. It was a life changer for me. It's a old cholesterol medicine that can be used as a bile binder. I suffered with diarrhea for years.
Avatar f tn I am curious if you tried cholestramine or welchol pills for detox? I use the welchol because I can't drink liquid meds.
Avatar m tn I tried using the Goldbond lotion that seems to work for most people but I had a sensitivity to the menthol in that lotion so I used Cetaphil lotion instead. I used children's liquid benadryl and it helped for a period of time and then it stopped working so I switched to Zyrtec and that seemed to help me a lot. The Zyrtec is a 24 hour thing so I just took one every day.
Avatar m tn the first two times, there were a few blockages - 10, 18 and 20% The last time was in December 2013 with a different cardiologist (I moved across the state) and he said I had NO blockages at all. HUH??? My lipid profiles are still horrible even with medications. Pravacol, Tricor and Welchol. His answer for this question was: "Those medications took the blockages away." Of course, I am no doctor but this seems funny to me.
Avatar f tn I'm so sorry this happened to you! I don't have severe bowel or bladder problems from MS but your story took me right back to my teenage years (long ago, in a previous life). More than once I didn't realize my period had started until I got home after school and discovered a big stain on the back of my skirt.
