Welchol bile

Common Questions and Answers about Welchol bile

welchol

Avatar f tn Diarrhea after gallbladder removal is often due to excess excretion of bile, which irritates the colon. So, this is why asked, if stool is green. But the bile may still be the cause. I think bile would cause at least some anal burning during bm. There are some remedies which bind bile in the colon and they may help.
Avatar n tn Ask your doctor about Welchol; it's a cholesterol medicine that binds bile salts. I had mine taken out in February of last year and tried to "tough it out," but after a doctor put me on Welchol, I rarely ever get sick after eating.
Avatar n tn I had the same thing post gb removal, it was a reaction to bile due to bile duct damage that occurred in the gb removal surgery.
Avatar n tn People don't develop IBS after GB surgery, they end up with bile 'dumping' - uncontrolled bile release - into the duodenum that irritates the bowel and causes the diarrhea. For some reason docs end up telling their patients that its IBS and it's not. The resin is helpful to a lot of people, but it does have a lot of drawbacks such as the effects on the teeth.
Avatar n tn There is about a 5% incidence of watery diarrhea immediately following removal of the gallbladder that is thought to result from bile salt irritation in an empty GI tract. It usually responds well to resins that bind these bile salts (cholestyramine) so they can't irritate the intestine. Most commonly the intestine adapts such that these agents can be weaned off over several weeks.
Avatar n tn i have been taking digestive enzymes and bile salts along with centrum vitamins and omega vitamins 369 and i could tell a difference the day i started taking them. i did have the runs everytime i ate and my chest was hurting along with bloating and all kinds of symptoms they are gone now.
Avatar f tn PLEASE HELP!!!!! I had my gall bladder out on Aug. 31/09, laprascoplicaly (sp?) Since, I've had a horrible cramp under my right rib cage, which at first, I thought was due to my (enlarged) gall bladder being removed, and "stuff" just settling into it's space. The pain is still there, but as of Sept. 10, I have developed horrible diarhea which is just bile. I'm afraid to eat, because this will produce bile, which in turn leaves me sitting on the toilet for hours.
Avatar f tn t get the diarreha under control, you may want to talk to your doc about using a bile-binding resin like questran or a product like Welchol.
Avatar n tn Since January I have been waking up with severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting. And once I vomit, which is nothing but bile, I usually feel slightly better although have no appetite for a few hours. I have lost some weight which is OK because I am overweight, however this is really not fun. I am worn out! I went to a Gastroenterologist last week and he has scheduled me for an endoscopy.
Avatar f tn Was diagnosed with Bile reflux after having an endoscopy that showed bile in my stomach. I understand it is not supposed to be there, and that the bile should stay in my small intestine. I also know it can be caused by a malfunction with my pyloric sphincter. What I don't understand is why there is bile is my system at all because I thought bile is only released from the gallbladder when you eat food, (and you fast for 12 hours for the endoscopy). Anyone else out there have bile reflux?
Avatar f tn It turned out to be the welchol I had started on to decrease my cholesterol. I felt bloated, constipated, a little dizzy and a fast heart rate every late afternoon and evening. I was very fatigued and just felt lousy all over. I have to admit that the pressure feeling in the esophagus was the scarriest.
215461 tn?1331862765 there are drugs out there that can help with this if you do such as welchol or questrem light. You drink it once a day and it helps the galbladder produce juice to neutralize the fat in the foods before it hits the colon.
Avatar n tn Christyphillips, I don't agree that what you're daughter is experiencing is anywhere near normal, but the sad truth is there can be problems after GB surgery that an take awhile to settle down. But she should be evaluated for remaining sludge/stones. It can be residual, but some people can also make it 'anew.' If she hasn't had a full CBC with liver and pancreatic enzyme levels done, request it.
268356 tn?1236002604 Have you tried getting Welchol. They are bile-binding pills prescribed by your dr. I currently take two in the morning with breakfast and two with dinner, and eat lean dinner, and low calorie foods. I find two much fatty foods and too much sugary foods set off my dumping syndrome from gallbladder surgery in 2016.
Avatar f tn Long story short, they first game me Questran ( I believe that was the name) to bind the bile … I could hardly GAG it down because of the Sandy Texture.... Fortunately, my daughter who is a PA did research on optional medication. Welchol binds bile, which is an off label use. It is AMAZING... but expensive. I believe they now have a generic form of it. My gallbladder was removed several years before this and I didn't have trouble until they took the end of my small Intestines.
401016 tn?1201451802 I would assume they're giving you welchol for diarrhea and the Ami for GI spasms. This is a combination that is given to many (or combinations like it) when someone is experiencing unexplained abdominal pain (perhaps due to spasms) and diarrhea. Ami is used fairly frequently in GI problems, so don't consider it a 'head med.' It is, but in this case it's probably being used to work on the receptors in your GI tract - not your head, although it will do that, too.
Avatar m tn Can anyone explain to me why I still had a heart attack even while taking the following meds atenenol 50mg bid, HCTZ 25mg daily, zetia 40mg daily, plavix 25mg daily, welchol 625mg bid. Also what is the chance of a second heart attack My Aortic Valve, Tricuspid Valve, and my Mitral Valve are failing because they are stenotic and regurgitative. The Aortic valve is in the worst shape of the three they tell me. I have psoriatic arthritis and ankolosing spondylitis. all joints are involved.
Avatar n tn t always present. Find out from her doc whether she can try a bile-binding resin or something like welchol. In addition, make sure she's following a low fat diet. There are some suggestions for 'gallbladder' diets at www.gicare.com. If she's bringing up bile when vomiting, she needs to be evaluated for postcholecystectomy issues. Check medscape.com for some articles on the problem. If that doesn't help, consider checking into the possibility of food intolerances.
1391312 tn?1421086993 Needless to say I am in the potty ALOT. So, my GI figured out if they put me on Welchol it binds the bile to I think the meds and my body handles the bile better. Yes, acid indegestion is an issue from this also. Might be something to research up on.
Avatar f tn Normal is 35- 75 % Most surgeons will want to remove a gallbladder below 30% because it means the bile is trickling out slowly and it can back up causing damage to organs and other issues. Things like gallbladder flushes etc are not good for you so do not do that. Once it goes bad you can just try to deal with it as long as you can but it will have to come out eventually. You can eat very very lowfat in the meantime until you make a desicion. Fat causes more pain and issues.
Avatar f tn I also suffered horribly with diarrhea for about a year after, and eventually was put on Welchol to help. It also helped me to reduce the fried and fatty foods from my system.
Avatar m tn If you are itching and have Hepatitis C, it may be due to a buildup of bile. My husband is on a bile sequestrant called Welchol. It's kind of expensive and there is a less expensive med called colestipol. If you have Hep C, your liver is not able to process bile like a "normal" body would and it starts to accumulate, which makes you itch. No cream or rub is going to work if this is the case. The meds make your gastrointestinal system bind up the bile and then you poop it out.
Avatar f tn You might want to ask your doc if you could try some questran, a bile-binding resin. It's also possible that following a low fat diet may be of help since 'bile-dumping' can be a consequence of having a GB removed in some people.
Avatar f tn From what I have read it can help reduce the risk of the surgeon cutting the bile duct by mistake and causing a bile leak. which causes pain and bile to leak in your abdomen and tissues if it happens. He said that he has had over 1800 surgeries and has only had one bile leak and it was fixed with stents to drain the bile for 6 weeks. I feel comfortable with him so I am going to get it out next wed.
Avatar n tn Questran,Colestid, Welchol etc) It is now beleived by my GI that my rare case is : my GB is not emptying when needed to digest and then when lying down all the Bile comes out from gravity which too little or too much can both cause diarrhea . Anymore input before i meet my new surgeon ?
