Avatar n tn I have an English Mastiff, and she suddenly stopped eating one day. I took her to the vet, and it turned out she had a kidney-stone. I'm not saying that's what yours has, but pain (according to the vet) will cause a sudden decrease in appetite. Is your Mastiff urinating well? Meaning, for the amount that he's intaking, does it look like he's outputting enough?
437027 tn?1670266352 My English Mastiff has been crying occasionally and yelping several times a day, seems nervous and will not willingly jump up on the couch or go for walks. No obvious pains or swelling in hips or legs, is eating and drinking well. His lack of interest on going out is totally out of character. The only thing I can think of he was spooked when there were duck hunters nearby and heard the gunshots and was very nervous after that. Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn I just got a year old English mastiff a couple of days ago. 2 nights ago he got really excited and was running and jumping around every where. A little bit after that he started breathing really weird after drinking some water. I kinda sounds like an airy sneeze or almost like he needs to cough to get rid of it but won't. Now just a little bit ago I took him outside and it seemed is irine stream was very slow. I don't know if these are related or even anything to worry about.
Avatar m tn I had the same experience with my English Mastiff (although it was knee surgery and not back surgery). We had to keep her tied to the end of our bed-post to limit her range of motion. All she could do was sit up and lay back down. And this was for 8 weeks, mind you. Not fun for us to watch her go through. Not fun for our other 5 dogs not having their pack-leader (Alpha) around. Not fun for her to have to go through it.
Avatar n tn I have an English Mastiff - 2 years old, Boxer - 7 and a pug 7. Our routine is a brushing / combing before bed each night. I do find a number of fleas on the boxer and pug but next to nothing (on occassion 1 or 2) on the mastiff. I know there are meds you can put on the dogs to help prevent infestation. I am reluctant to use them because I have a niece who is 2 and she plays with the dogs a lot.
Avatar m tn Could be a torn ligament, or some type of joint damage. An x-ray at your vets office and at the very least, a wellness checkup should yield more answers. EXACT same thing happened to my English Mastiff. I took her to the dog-park, didn't notice any strange behavior, and when I got home, she was limping noticeably. Took her to the vet, only to find out that she'd told her MCL and ACL. Had to have a TPLO on each knee to repair the damage.
Avatar m tn We have a two year old english mastiff. He is healthy and not overweight but his hind legs have begun to shake. Its not all the time. Any hints at what could be causing this? I researched atrophy but noticed most animals were older.
Avatar f tn My 2 year old English Mastiff has been crying and yelping occasionally. He is eating, drinking, and seems otherwise fine. He doesn't want to jump on the couch nor go for walks, which is totally out of character for him. He seems nervous. No obvious signs of pain, moves well. The only thing I can think of is he was out for a walk and there were duck hunters around and when he heard the gunshots he was totally spooked. Seems to just want to lay on his blanket. Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn hi, we have a 7 year old english mastiff, about 140 lbs who has been and continues to be very healthy. we got him at 8 weeks and as he never exhibiited agressive or sexual behavior i did not have him neutered. my current vet wants me to do so as to avoid prostate problems but i'm wondering if that risk outweighs the risk of surgery at this age? what do you think??
1274559 tn?1284132218 I agree ! as my English Mastiff Butch used to have fun with us holding socks or bra's in his mouth until we bribed him to drop them, chicken breast was favourite. That self satisfied cheeky look in his eyes was priceless. Been over Ten yrs tears still ***** my eyes miss him.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have a 10 and a half year old neutered male English Mastiff. He's in good health, at a good weight, and has always been active with no hip, leg or joint problems. Eyes, ears and mental facilities are all great. A few months ago he started limping on one hind leg for a few days so I brought him to the vet who said it could be the start of osteoarthritis. His food and water had previously been downstairs so the vet said to move it upstairs to prevent any falling incidents.
Avatar f tn But when we go over to my brothers house, my four year old little girl gets scared out of her mind. My brother has a 240 pound English mastiff, the dog is really sweet. But for some reason my little girl doesn’t want to be anywhere near the dog. From day one, she has just been terrified of the dog, she was really hesitant to meet the dog the first time, she did it. But then I noticed that she was afraid. why is this?
359574 tn?1328360424 //www.medhelp.org/user_photos/show/194586?personal_page_id=1796003 Unlike the Bull Mastiff, English mastiffs are "dry mouthed" and really only get the messy soggy face when they are eating. He just turned 10 weeks old and is as big as the 13 year old Basenji. Trying to teach him his name and "Gideon, leave it" at this point. He will play with and try to eat anything and everything. I'll be seeing if we can get into "puppy boot camp".
Avatar f tn This boy is Mr Mugsy. Hes a 1 yr 9 mo old pitbull/mastiff mix. For the second season in a row Mugsy's skin gets riddled with bumps and hives all over his body. It looks almost like acne for a teenager. His belly gets very red as well and irritated. The skin gets dry and hair falls out more easily. I know it has to be allergies due to it coming back every spring season. My biggest question would be- What should I do to hydrate his skin and slow down/prevent future irritation?
Avatar n tn Poor doggie... a torn ACL is no fun. My English Mastiff (Condi) tore BOTH of hers when she was a puppy, and I had to have 2 separate surgeries to have them repaired. 2 TPLO's (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy), as you can imagine, do not come cheap, but it so improved her quality of life, I think it was $7500 well spent. Prior to her TPLO's, our local vet had her on a combination of Zubrin and Tramadol. While on the medications, all of her symptoms seemed to disappear.
1453990 tn?1329231426 Wow, English mastiff, huh? Yeah, he's going to be a big boy. It sounds like he's a smart cookie, too! It's amazing to me how many tricks my dog has learned - but for some reason, he is unable to learn 'drop it.' Especially if he has a ball in his mouth. He's very ball-fixated.
Avatar m tn My Dog is a 8&1/2 year old, 160lb English Mastiff. He has had a chronic ear condition, for more then a year, with lots of brown wax building up in his very large ears. He has redness in his ear (which might be from scratching or not) and pain when he shakes his head. We have tried many different things: mite treatments, general ear cleaner with drying powder, ear cleaner with bio-active enzymes, cleaner with 1% hydrocortisone and none have kept his ears clean for more then a week.
Avatar m tn Same thing happened to my English Mastiff, on both sides at the same time (she tore her ACL and MCL, rear legs), and had to have (2) separate surgeries to repair them. Talk to your vet and see what they think... I'm willing to bet that if you call them, they'll say that an xray is more than likely the next step. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Zubrin is a good medication for this sort of thing. Before we had our mastiff operated on, the vet prescribed it and it worked wonders. Sorry you can't afford the surgery. It isn't exactly cheap, I know that. Try and get as much weight off him as possible. It's make him more comfortable. Talk to your vet about other anti-inflamitory drugs and doggie pain meds. In my experience though, ZUBRIN tops the list of drugs that have good results. Good luck!
789956 tn?1236736723 We have within the last month adopted an english bulldog/mastiff mix dog from the humane society. We have discovered that he is eating cardboard and kleenex. We have him on a very good quality of diet, he gets regular exercise and interaction with dogs and people. We are not sure if this is a behavioral problem due to his past abuse, if his diet is missing something, if we should be worried about gut obstruction.
