My specialist has feferred me for an ablation procedure which I am waiting for now. I was put on warfarin and bisoprolol and due to the nature of my work I cannot go back whilst on warfarin as i work offshore. I was wandering why I cant be put on asprin which will at least allow me to pass my medical to return to work after the ablation. I have been off work for 3 months due to this and without pay which is causing me a great deal of stress and anxiety.
I believe the correct (workable) way to take Warfarin is to find the dose level that keeps your INR in the desired range (usually 2 to 3) when you eat "normally".. just don't change your diet in any way that strongly affects you consumption of Vitamin K. Most foods do not contribute much "K", so keep it normal on those tht do, such a green leafy vegetables.
I see no relationship between Warfarin and you leg problem.. are you on other medications?
I am currently doing weekly INR testing at home. It is working well. I bounce a bit between 2.5 and 3.0 but I stay in the range for the most part. For some reason my INR has never settled down. Not sure why but no sense crying about it. Since I currently have a pacemaker running continuously (had AV node ablation to isolate ventricles from fibrillating atria) and need to protect against clot formation.
I'm guessing you're on warfarin? That's a PITA, isn't it? I got tired of going to the clinic every week. I know you can get one of those machines for the house. I guess it's more for the people who are permanently on warfarin.
(As a parallel example, a proposed replacement for warfarin was recently halted in testing because it produced fatal intracranial bleeding in some patients during testing - bleeding strokes. That drug was called idraparinux. My point is that anticoagulants are known for causing bleeding. Warfarin is an anticoagulant.)

Given that yesterday he said to not take the warfarin he was changing me from the genertic warfarin and putting me on the brand name of the med coumadin. Said some folks do not tolerate warfarin well but do well on coumadin and i am to start the coumadin today. I would be lying if i didn't say i am a bit gunshy at this point. This med has made me absolutely miserable and today is my 43rd bday...

As for pregnancy, mechanical valves do greatly raise the risk of fetal problems, such as still births. The culprit is believed to be the anti-coagulant (warfarin) which crosses the placenta barrier. Trials are trying to establish if dosage could be the answer.

ve tried to read as much as I can about warfarin along the way. I even went to a day-long CEU workshop for medical professionals on warfarin management and got the certificate. But I'm still not an expert. To my way of thinking, the experts are the hematologists, pharmacists, and other health professionals who manage large numbers of people's warfarin on a daily basis.
3 days later (boxing day) I was rushed to hospital with chest pains and diagnosed with self imposed pulmonary embolism. I was put on to Warfarin and monitored in hospital for 2 weeks.
t know how warfarin is affecting your life style. I have been on warfarin for years and had no concerns about running and bike riding, and using power wood working tools. All of these activities puts one at an increased risk of a cut and bleeding, but I simply take the risk. On the other hand, I don't sky dive, or pick fights ....
