Avatar f tn Dear Sir, Kindly advise as to what precautions my father should take for his INR fluctuation as he is daily taking WARF 5mg.
Avatar f tn My Dad who is 77 has been on Coumadin since 2005 after a DVT following surgery, He also has Afib and has had it for years, due to a thyroid condition. he also has a pacemaker. He's been on Armour thyroid for at least 4 years, and tried Armour instead of Synthoid to see if he would feel better on Synthoid's alternative. Which he does actually feel better emotionally on the Armour.
Avatar m tn hi st142 , I assume DVR stands for "Double Valve Replacement"; the fact that you are on Warfarin and monitoring your PT/INR indicates that you are on therapy to prevent embolism from a mechanical/bio-prosthetic valve in the heart. While you are on Warfarin - and this would be life-long for you - you are at risk from both under-dosing, which would lead to embolism, and over-dosing, when you could have bleeding from some part of your body, including the brain.
Avatar n tn 37 for placebo (10). In a study of 11 patients on stable warfarin, INR increased after 4 days of taking APAP 4 g/day increasing the risk of bleeding (7). A 72-year-old man was on acenocoumarol, chronically self-medicating with APAP 1 to 2 g/day for low back pain. His INR was stable at 2.5, but when APAP was stopped his INR dropped to 1.62. Two weeks later, he restarted APAP and the INR climbed to 2.0 over 4 weeks (5).
90270 tn?1199334469 As a result, I am constantly changing my coumadin (warfarin) levels, either holding the med (if my PT/INR is too high), increasing it or keeping it the same.

Avatar f tn He has been having me go to the lab once per week. Last week my INR was 2.9 and I have been taken 5mg of warfarin. This week my INR was 6.6. I am concerned about bleeding to death. Please advise.
996946 tn?1503249112 The major side effect of warfarin is simply bleeding. This is generally minimal as long at the PT/INR is kept in the therapeutic range. People on warfarin, even at desireable levels, may notice that they bruise more easily than usual. Otherwise, warfarin is well tolerated. Side effects which sometimes occur include: Hair loss Nausea, vomiting, cramping or diarrhea (these are quite uncommon). Low white blood cell counts. These effects however are quite uncommon.
Avatar f tn A person on warfarin with an inr of 1.2 is not at risk of bleeding out. They are at risk for a clot. People not on warfarin normal range of about 1 because they don't have a bleeding or clotting disorder, thus 1 is normal. I take 10 MG a day everyday and my inr was 2.2 just today. It all depends o. The reason behind taking it.
Avatar n tn As someone who is on warfarin, I have the same impresson of an INR of 4.8 as you do -- that it is undesirable but not greatly alarming. I have never heard that the INR is interpreted any differently for an infant than for an older person. There are some "heart mom" forums on the internet for mothers of children with congenital heart disease. I don't know where to direct you, but if you can find a forum such as that, this is a question that some of the other moms might know.
Avatar m tn Until 2 months back I was taking 150mg Ecosprin and 5mg Warfarin daily, then I was diagnosed with Hepatitis E and my INR value increased suddenly, so my doctor cut on the warfarin for few days until it dropped to <1.5 and then I started taking my warfarin again but my INR didn't increase. 2 weeks back my doctor increased my dose from 5 to 6mg but still my INR value is 1.4 and it is not increasing from past 2 months. Please help.
Avatar m tn s body can metabolize and excrete the warfarin. That is why doctors typically give someone who is on warfarin a prescribed INR range, rather than a set dosage of warfarin, because the dose will differ from person to person. Whatever the amount of warfarin is that you personally need -- and yes, you are your own person and not a textbook person -- for your INR to be within your prescribed range is the amount that YOU need.
3053561 tn?1340267982 The answer is no. Flecainide is not the drug that determines the INR - blood thinners (warfarin, coumarin or what the trade name is) do. I assume you have paroxysmal (events of) atrial fibrillation if you need your INR regulated and you take Flecainide. Atrial fibrillation is controlled through rate control or rhythm control. Antiarrhythmic drugs (like Flecainide) is used to avoid atrial fibrillation from happening.
Avatar f tn I was on warfarin for 6 months and a dvt in the popliteal vein. when my inr went up due to being on anti inflammotories- I had severe neck pain and nothing else helped- my inr nurse told me to increase my vitamin k veggies and this worked well to keep it even. When it went down my dose was increased and or I was told to skip green veggies that day and take an extra dose. I went for testing nearly every week during the time I was on warfarin due to lots of fluctuations.
Avatar f tn You need to call the doctor that prescribes the Warfarin. It is common for antibiotics to mess up the INR. You need professional advice at this point, IMO!
Avatar n tn At the professional workshop that I attended, we were told by the presenter that the anticoagulation properties of warfarin are most likely present down to an INR of about 1.6. The reason doctors don't like their patients to go below 2.0 (or in some cases 2.5) is to provide a cushion of safety. Also, a bleeding incident attributable to warfarin would not be expected to happen at an INR of 4.0. Some people, such as those who have two mechanical heart valves, have a prescribed range of 3.
Avatar n tn I just got back from seeing my doctor and was told that aspirin is no substitute for warfarin. The problem is in establishing a consistent INR reading of 2-3. as soon as I can achieve that reading I will only have to go for blood test once a month. The stroke, according to my cardiologist was caused by Afib.
942410 tn?1274047074 s why I am not going to be injecting the Lovenox any longer and today I skip my 5mg warfarin . I begin again the 5mg warfarin on Saturday and go for protime on Monday to see if it has come down a tad into the target range .
Avatar f tn I am 53 and just had my 2nd open heart surgery 2 months ago. 3 years ago a bovine aortic valve was put in and there was major scarring that occured. So in December they replaced it with a mechanical valve. I'm now on Warfarin 7.5 and have been maintaining an INR of 2.5-2.8. Last week I had a severe stomach virus and became very dehydrated. I went in for my draw yesterday and recieved a call last night from my cardiologist.
Avatar n tn Futher to discussion re warfarin & eyebleeds (bleeds in eye), I have fairly frequent eybleeds which I find rather scary! The bleed usually continues for at least 2 days & takes over a week to clear. They have become worse & more frequent since I started on warfarin 2005. My INR tends to fluctuate & on 17/12/08 was 2.37. My current warfarin dose is 8 mg daily. Does this problem get worse over time?
Avatar m tn I also suffer from AFib and use Warfarin to hold INR 2.0 - 3.0. I, and I believe most, do not have a bleeding problem in that range. I have no understanding of what you did you to nose, bu *** is clear you can't doo that. If you have nasal congestion blowing doesn't make it better anyway. Our nasal tissues strength are not all the same, some have problems with bleeding even with an INR - 1.
770426 tn?1235061489 I'm posting this comment in reply to the question regarding headaches/Coumadin. It is listed as a side effect you should report to your doctor. I have suffered with migraines for years. I take anti seizure medication & had greatly reduced them to just 2 a month from almost daily. After knee surgery in late March 2013, I developed DVT and was put on heparin & then warfarin. I am monitored & kept in INR range of 2-3.
Avatar n tn Saw palmetto may increase the risk of bleeding when taking Warfarin!! That said I'm on Warfarin and take saw palmetto My doctor knows and I have my INR checked every month. Speak to your doctor first!!!
