SINCE I HAD MY MITRAL VALVE REPLACED 3 YEARS AGO, I'VE BEEN ON WARFARIN FOR LIFE. I HAVE OCCASIONAL INSOMNIA PROBLEM AND ARE TAKING 3MG OF MELATONIN EVERY NIGHT TO HELP ME TO SLEEP. MY QUESTION IS " CAN MELATONIN AFFECT THE ACTION OF WARFARIN? " HOPE YOU CAN ANSWER MY QUESTION VERY SOON.
Dear Jennie, I apologize for the delay, however melatonin is quite young in terms of it's therapuetic uses in current medicine, hence the facts are limited. More pointedly, melatonin and warfarin are metabolized in the liver which means that melatonin can affect your prothrombin time (as determined by the amount of warfarin you take each day), but not necessarily and not in any predictable manner meaning it may not affect it at all.
On a good note, I had a follow-up scan of my leg with the DVT and it had resolved itself, so I could quit the warfarin and now I can take Alleve when necessary for any pain!!! Just before Christmas my sinus allergies came back with a vengeance! I couldn't quit sneezing and blowing my nose each morning. I then thought that just maybe my back pain could have resulted from the generic Cytomel, as I had stopped taking it shortly before stopping the Zyrtec.
then later when sleep would not happen i took calcium/magnesium/zinc supplement, reaserched how melatonin worked with body and took that combined with very dark quiet enviroment.
I went to my GP complaning of no sense of smell, saw a surgeon and surgery was recomended, I was given a prescription for Prednisone, a steroid, this gave me some sense of smell, and here's the but, I had the operation and still could not smell, so more Prednisone, well the upshot is that the steroids have caused my Osteo-Necrosis, this is when the heads of the long bones die, so have now had core decompression on one hip and the other totally replaced. Oxycontin.
I apologize for any typos but I am doing this by voice because I'm running a fever and can't type, I have a very bad infection as well as a single right now. For 17 years my doctors have prescribed narcotics for me...started with vicodin then percocet then kept increasing as I got sicker and sicker over the years from radiation poisoning and I just had my 16 surgery which was my second open heart surgery for valve disease due to radiation and chemotherapy.
I've been to vascular surgeons, cardiologists. hand surgeons and regular md's and no one can help me. This just happened again to my thumb after 10 years and my cardiologist prescribed high blood pressure meds...and I DON'T have high blood pressure, I've been running for 25 years! If anyone has a diagnosis please share...I know your frustration.
It started off as every now and then but for the last month it is all the time 24/7. It is really taking a toll on my life. It is so bad it wakes me up and prevents me from falling asleep. I have had thyroid, hormones, mri, ct scan and many other tests. The only test that came back questionable was my ANA, it is positive, speckled pattern. My RA factor was negative. I have no diagnosis as of yet. I do have Epstein Barr virus too.
