Fatigue and lethargy are side effects of atenolol, however, I do not see any information suggesting that muscle weakness is a side effect of atenolol. I see that you also take Vytorin. It appears that symptoms of ALS,( Lou Gehrig's Disease) have been reported to the FDA in a higher than expected number of patients taking statins. ALS is a progressive motor neuron disorder with symptoms such as difficulty walking or standing, difficulty with fine motor skills and muscle paralysis.
As of the present, ongoing post-marketing surveillance or phase IV trials, there has been no direct evidence of these drugs causing such conditions especially CLL. But, this does not mean that we can totally rule out the association. These side effects would usually take several years or even decades to come out if ever there is really an association, and for these drugs, it may seem too early to tell if these side effects will come out.
I am sooooo exhausted not sure if it is from Vytorin or Lisinopril but have been on a ton of them and they all make me tired or cause me muscle pain or some other side effect. My doctor said that you need to stay on them for a while and then your blood pressure should regulate and the horrible side effects should go away after a few weeks.......we will see! Good Luck!
I have had some intense muscle and joint pain in the past, which is why my doctor has been changing my statin type and dosage. We're trying to find the right combo. I have a history of CAD and PAD, have had a femoral stent, and am a smoker.(59 yo male, btw).
Does anyone know if I can substitute 20 mg Lipitor for my 20 mg Simvastatin, which I just ran out of? I have some Lipitor in the cabinet and my doc is going to put me on Vytorin in 11 days.
Vytorin does a remarkable job of reducing your Cholesterol, much better than Zocor (Simvastatin) alone. However, Zetia doesn't seem to add anything to the picture as far as preventing heart disease is concened. But read this about Zocor:

Dementia, global amnesia, severe muscle weakness and possible breast cancer are some of the side effects reported, and there are many dr's who believe it is a last resort. You can search to see if Vytorin studies have shown that it helps reduce cholesterol deposits on heart muscle. Vytorin is a combination, I believe, of Zocor and Zetia. Zocor should help with the cholesterol already there. If not, Lipitor has studies showing that Lipitor at 40mg can help reduce cholesterol on heart valves and in arteries. If it reduces cholesterol there, it may reduce cholesterol on the heart muscle. Cholesterol builds in the arteries, valves and muscle of the heart.

EMedTV has an article that explains some statins are associated with high liver enzymes. It says increases in liver enzymes occur in 1.7 percent of people taking Vytorin. This increase appears to be more prevalent in people who are taking higher doses.
It goes on to explain other causes of high liver enzymes.
The only FDA approved drug that has had clinical trails is Crestor. It is a statin drug so you have to watch for muscle pain , fatigue with it. If you get any tell you doctor right away. Have they done a full lipid panel on you too? Diet only lowers your cholesterol by about 10%. So, it helps to not eat any extra cholestrol as your liver is what genetically controls the amount of receptors you are born with that break down cholesterol.
I know that he had great success lowering his Cholesterol with at least 2 or 3 of these agents, but he has suffered terribly each time with very acute muscle pains that are virtually non-stop. I suffered a heart attack in July of 09 due to a blockage in the LAD. It was 99% blocked. I also had another 78% blockage. I was admitted into the hospital. The next day I had a cardiac cath where I received 3 stents. The next day, I had a 2nd cath for the 78% blockage and received 2 more stents. While they were in there they found a branch artery fully blocked, during the angioplasty process the artery tore, which put me into another heart attack on the table.
Yes, I've only been on it a week and I experience the muscle aches and bilateral flank pain as well. In addition, insomnia!
