I am cures Ty on Vytorin and will be starting therapy soon, I have read that someone on a cholesterol lowering drug should not be on this drug. Can you tell me why?

My doctor perscribed Vytorin 10/20. This is where my health began to deteriorate. I developed both clay soft stool and chronic explosive diarrhea in the mornings (3-4X before leaving the house) and excessive tiredness. At first I didnt put the two together, I just thought it was something I was eating or drinking so I continuously changed my diet. Nothing helped. I went back to the doctor for a 1 yr follow up and mentioned the diarrhea.

Diet only lowers your cholesterol by about 10%. So, it helps to not eat any extra cholestrol as your liver is what genetically controls the amount of receptors you are born with that break down cholesterol. So, try not eating anything with partially hydrogenated fat (trans fat), none. Also, have no egg yolks, no bacon, and so forth. Eat whole wheat cereal with fruit for breakfast, non fat milk or vanilla soy milk. lots of vegies and fruits etc. Very light on meats.

i have been wondering if there is a particular Genotype that causes more damage than others? like the way geno 3 is know for causing fatty livers, does 1,2 ,3 or 4 or indeed subgroups cause more damage?

I had a traffic accident in 2002. This accident makes brain damage, disorder of muscles(especially on movement), ascend stairs, etc... My cerebellum had a damage in the accident. Just make sure to get your blood tested annually to make sure there are no changes in your liver enzymes.

Reading the many comments I came across one that stated lovastatin is an old medicine and is not used often. After recent cath my doctor changed my medication from vytorin ,have taken vytorin for 5 years, to lovastatin. I did ask for a cheaper medicine and lovastatin was what he came with. I have no problems or side effects . My question is lovastatin less effective then other of the same and if not why is it not used often. I have discontinued the medication to reduce the cholesterol level. I have always had very good numbers based on good diet, exercise, etc. My doctor wanted to reduce my cholesterol to be below 100. I took the medication for several months and the latest blood test indicates the liver enzmes are in the abnormal range...never an issue always normal. I certainly would not trade off a very low cholesterol level with a risk of liver damage....doesn't make sense!

I have IBS with diarrhea. My family doctor gave me Vytorin and it caused ONE HORRIBLE bout with the diarrea. So, my question is: Should people with IBS not take Vytorin? If the answer is: No,they shouldn't,then why do you think this side effect is not listed on the pamphlet that comes with the drug.....or any where else?!

I have been on Vytorin for a few years and my insurance company will not pay for it anymore. My doctor has switched me to Simvastatin (40mg) daily.My question is has anyone else made the switch and have they noticed any side-effects?

Fatigue and lethargy are side effects of atenolol, however, I do not see any information suggesting that muscle weakness is a side effect of atenolol. I see that you also take Vytorin. It appears that symptoms of ALS,( Lou Gehrig's Disease) have been reported to the FDA in a higher than expected number of patients taking statins. ALS is a progressive motor neuron disorder with symptoms such as difficulty walking or standing, difficulty with fine motor skills and muscle paralysis.

I am so scared I have caused damage to my liver. After I get off of these will it repair itself or am I in trouble. The only syntom I have right now is welling in my akiles and feet. But i have taken fluid pills for the fluid for yrs before I started taken lorcet.

Vytorin is a statin that lowers LDL and raises HDL. I believe Vytorin is a combination of Zetia and Zocor. I am not sure if the Vytorin will go with the Niaspam so you will need to ask your doctor that.

t think it is the HCV directly causing the taste bud problem but the liver disease might be. I remember reading somewhere that severe liver damage can cause food to taste bad or have no taste. I seem to recall there is a connection. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Make sure to see a Hepatologist to manage your stage 4 cirrhosis.

Remar is correct, if very little fats are being consumed, then the only conclusion really is a hyperactive Liver. If you look up "familial hypercholesterolemia" this will explain the problem.

I have been taking Darvocet for about two years now. I began just taking one a week at night after a bad day and it has progressed to 1-3 daily for about 6 months now. I went to the Dr. for a checkup yesterday and the ALT liver function test was high. The other liver tests were normal just that one was high. The Dr. thinks it is from my acid reflux medication and is changing that but I rarely take it. Could it be the Darvocet?
