Avatar f tn The surgery is a Nissen fundoplication. Make sure you discuss the pro's and con's of the surgery with your doc. Essentially, they take the top portion of your stomach (the fundus) and wrap it around the junction of the esophagus and the stomach to 'tighten up' the lower esophageal sphincter to prevent the movement of acid from the stomach to the esophagus. But if you're vomiting bile, that's not the same thing as vomiting acid.
Avatar f tn In achalsia, the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax. In GERD, the sphincter relaxes abnormally allowing acid to go up in to the esophagus. But both can cause lung symptoms. In GERD, the acid content may get aspirated and cause symptoms. In achalasia, the food that stays above the tight sphincter may get regurgitated and aspirated in to the lungs. A manometry and 24 hours pH monitoring will be helpful to know whether it is GERD or achalasia.
Avatar m tn If, as frequently happens with GERD, it is caused by a weak lower esophageal sphincter, then you are going to get some reflux particularly at night lying down.. Sometimes trying to spend most of the night sleeping on your left side (because that puts the esophageal opening to the stomach higher) might help. So, even though you may not feel any symptoms of acid indigestion that does not mean you are not having reflux problems.
Avatar n tn Magnetic Ring Helps Reduce Reflux in Patients With GERD Diedtra Henderson Feb 21, 2013 A magnetic device that improved the function of the lower esophageal sphincter helped to reduce patients' exposure to esophageal acid, improved their symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and reduced their reliance on proton-pump inhibitors, according to an industry-funded prospective study. Avatar m tn When it gets to the area that the stomach and esophagus meet (the gastroesophageal junction [GEJ]), a muscle there must relax for the food to be transferred from the esophagus to the stomach (the lower esophageal sphincter [LES]).
568812 tn?1379165794 This can be due to incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter, transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation, impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from the esophagus, or a hiatus hernia. If the reflux reaches the throat, it is called laryngopharyngeal reflux disease ****************************************************************************************************** If there is anything else we can do to help, please post another question. Avatar f tn I am a middle age woman who 8-10 years ago began to suffer from pains in my right side and lower abdomen (my gall bladder was removed when these symptoms started, I had gall stones and I thought these were causing the pain). Later on I began to suffer pains again and had a colonoscopy , scan and endoscopy and nothing was found. I was told I was suffering from irritable bowel.
1550886 tn?1306206745 The lower esophageal sphincter normally relaxes as food is moved down the esophagus by esophageal contractions. These esophageal contractions are started by swallowing. As soon as swallowing stops, the LES closes to keep the food in the stomach. A normally functioning LES prevents food and stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus. All other reports are normal but the LES is lax (decreased tone) resulting in reflus and burning pain.
Avatar m tn I have a weekend lower and upper esophageal sphincter confirmed by a barium swallow exam. Yesterday my nose was burning and it seemed like my stomach acid was reaching my sinuses Is there a link to Non allergic rhinitis and Largeneal Reflux Disease, If so anyone know how to manage it without taking Omeprazole?
Avatar n tn If this has been going on awhile, you may have an esophageal sphincter "stricture" (the muscle band at the bottom of your food tube is too tight) and it is difficult for food to pass through. Try the GI forum -it may have more information...I'm not certain of any thyroid causes of this...
Avatar m tn Normally the lower esophageal sphincter prevents passage this regurgitation. The loss of tone of this sphincter can be due to certain medications like pain pills, muscle relaxers, eating certain foods and drinks like chocolate, drinks, alcohol, soda, coffee, etc These symptoms must be really bothering you a lot. Rule out any medical condition, such as GERD, Acid Reflux, hernia, or any other contributing factor.
8703470 tn?1399411036 Hi! I am sorry to hear about your medical problems. Persisting nausea and vomiting and inability to retain anything could be due to pethidine overuse. However, the symptoms should stop after stopping pethidine use. Hypothyroidism and diabetes can also cause slowing of gut. Since you have problems with periods, these two conditions along with polycystic ovary should be investigated for. Electrolyte imbalance, especially involving calcium and magnesium could also be the cause.
367100 tn?1330914725 This can be due to incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter, transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation, impaired expulsion of gastric reflux from the esophagus, or a hiatus hernia. If the reflux reaches the throat, it is called laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Treatment for this is with tablets called Lanzoprazole.
Avatar f tn Go for it. Spicy food, chocolate and coffee all decrease the tone of your lower esophageal sphincter muscle. So do the pregnancy hormones. So some women get heart burn. I grew up eating spicy food so non spicy was not really doable. Especially in the beginning, I was to nauseated to eat anything else.
Avatar m tn The aim of treatment is to relieve symptoms by decreasing pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter. Nitrates (for example, nitroglycerin placed under the tongue before meals) or calcium channel blockers. Arthritis has inflammatory characteristics and very little if anything to do with dilated vessels, etc.
Avatar n tn His esophageal sphincter is gone, and he cannot tolerate ANYTHING, absolutely nothing!! In the hospital he is just forcing down a bit of jello and broth, and even that is difficult. He is feeling very weak, and I don't know at what point they will have to feed him parentally. He is slowly starving. Glucose and electrlytes is all he is getting, and basically he has not been able to eat for at least 2 weeks.
Avatar f tn The only limiting factor would be heart burn as spicy food, chocolate, caffeine all dilate the smooth muscles that keep you lower esophageal sphincter mildly contracted. Some ppl feel heartburn after eating it others don't. All I eat is spicy food as do most of the women in India and Pakistan. It will have no known harmful effect in the baby.
Avatar f tn Like Selma said we have a lot of sphincters in our body but it sounds like she is talking about the same one that I was thinking, the Lower esophageal Sphincter which lets food enter the stomach but prevents things from leaving. I have been told too that acid reflux can cause a weird tongue. I had surgery Dec 09 and about 2 weeks later started to experience problems with my tongue. It is numb feeling, burns, tingles and is enlarged.
Avatar f tn Hello, I'm glad that you found us at the Pain Management Forum. Welcome. Your symptoms sound fairly similar to esophageal spasms. Often, symptoms that may suggest an esophageal spasm are the result of another condition such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or achalasia, a problem with the nervous system in which the muscles of the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) don't work properly. I have had esophageal spasms. They can last 15 minutes to several hours.
Avatar f tn When the doctor spoke with us after the procedure he only seen one spot that was was suspicious in the lower esophageal sphincter which he said was common with people that have heartburn.
Avatar m tn Librax is typically not suggested for either contdition as it can result in relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter and an increase in reflux into the esophagus. Many drugs affect the LES and they should be avoided. There are also foods that can relax the LES or increase the amount of acid produced, so dietary modifications are also suggested.
Avatar f tn Something else I’m dealing with, and wondering if it’s related too, is that I have esophageal spasms and my lower sphincter is extremely tight and just to passing gas I bare down till I’m seeing stars. No joke.
891535 tn?1241258300 Dear Pebbles- I am with Selma on hoping that the problem is merely PND however, I had a similar problem with choking and gagging in my sleep and it was due to my lower esophageal sphincter failing as a result of a large hiatal hernia.
Avatar n tn No vomiting or stomach upset has been reported. No change in BM pattern. No change in energy level. No epigastric pain, no painful swallowing, and no unusual 'tastes'.Lab work (CBC, CHEM 20) was normal in Jan 2008. Questions: How readily can the esophagus / sphincter recover from thermal injury? Is thermal injury a risk factor for other GI disease? What was the likely damage from the injuries? Are there GI specific tumor markers? What is your recommendation?
Avatar f tn Many people think they have too much acid but in fact don’t have enough acid. Without enough stomach acid the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) tone may weaken or relax inappropriately allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. Causes of low stomach acid include stress, aging, gastritis, poor diet, nutrient deficiencies - iron, zinc, B vitamins, smoking, alcohol, H. Pylori infection, acid blockers, stomach surgery. In my case it’s autoimmune gastritis.
Avatar n tn the meds work for anxiety attacks but for what i was really wondering is if anyone has the same problem of keeping food down. usually after every time i eat will start burping constantly until i start vomiting anything i have ate until its just stomach acid. its been happening for about a week now. i just want to know if anyone has had this problem and could help me out here. starting to really worry. im 19, i use to drink alcohol alot (pretty much an everyday binge drinker for about 2 years).
Avatar m tn The other possibilities are dust allergy, gastro esophageal reflex disease, hyperplastic tonsil, abnormal upper esophageal sphincter function, causes this sensation due to altered upper esophageal pressure. Firstly I suggest you to consult ENT surgeon for possible causes and further management. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn For me it meant that I had just the opposite of GERD. My esophageal sphincter muscle is so tight that it won't let my food into my stomach easily, so I end up having reflux because food and drink is stuck in my esophagus. No acid from the stomach at all, but the same symptoms. Plus, I have a weak esophagus that doesn't push the food and drink downward. I'm looking into a non-invasive operation that will loosen the sphincter enough to let the food through but not cause GERD.
