Avatar f tn There are almost no institutions for the elderly, and few elderly people receive pensions. Most elderly people are therefore completely dependent on their families -- and traditionally primarily on the women family members. However, Chinese women, too, are much more likely to be out working now than previously. The family as a network is also being weakened by rapid urbanisation.

Avatar n tn It should be noted that on the medication warning labels itself there are express concerns about the use of antipsychotics in people with dementia. You can look on the medication websites themselves. As for tardive dyskinesia that can be a concern and especially so in people that are elderly. The only FDA approved antipsychotic that won't cause tardive dyskinesia is Clozaril but that of course has a side effect profile of concern in itself as it can cause blood dyscreias.
Avatar f tn There is much truth in that statement. It is also true that many of these people are forgotten by family and those who are hired to care for them many times are very mean to them. So to hear that some go into bully phase or domination phase is no surprise. They find a need to get some control over their life anyway they can. It is sooo sad.... You do for these people everything you do for a child, except they know how humiliating it is and a child doesnt.
Avatar m tn So I have an elderly dog, I don't know how old for sure. But he started puking and diarrhea all other over the place. My Mom read online to give him white rice and hamburger. He didn't like that too much and now my dog looks like walking death. We took him to the vet but for a 200$ payment just to get him looked at is a little much for us right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated . He is a mixed breed, mid sized dog and is at least 9 years old.
Avatar n tn My Mom is 92 years old. Has been living on her own in Elderly housing for 20 years. Her dementia consisted of repeating and repeating, forgetting who visited, etc. but went throughout her normal activities w/some services very well and very happiy. Always knew us but was starting to forget other people but after prompting she would be ok. 3 weeks ago she developed a very severe resistant UTI and then got c-dift (not sure how to spell that). Anyway ended up dilusional, confused, etc.
Avatar f tn No, I don't think so it is the symptom of end of life. I lived with my father in law who was 94 years old when he came in. He's healthy, only with asthma. He offered help me to sweep the floor/yard. Hanging and picking up the clothes. He also concentrated on the weather make sure he picked up the clothes before it rained. He'll miss if he slept all the day long! LOL. He liked sleep (usually longer hour than us).
611606 tn?1315517767 Hi, I am owned by a wonderful 15 year old Kitty. Smokie and I have been together since he was 5 weeks old. A year ago he started showing his age and seemed uncomfortable. I took him to the Vet, and was told that h was very geriatric, so of course I brought him back home, so relived I didn't have to put him to sleep. Now he is getting worse, his cries sound like he is in pain, he longer walks well. I don't want him to suffer, he has been such a huge part of my life.
Avatar n tn Are the blood blisters in the arms and legs of some elderly a vitamin or mineral deficiency? If so, what will help? This discussion is related to blood blisters.
Avatar n tn There are boxed warnings on the labels (also you could go to the medication website as well) stating to use caution about the use of antipsychotics in people who are elderly especially people with dementia. It would be worthwhile to see a neurologist who specializes in gerontology. There are medications specifically designed to treat dementia that might be able to be used without these concerns of which they would have more knowledge of.

Avatar m tn Would the concern with foul smelling breath in this case be that food is rotting in the lungs? He has a permanent feeding tube. I think you are right that the intestine and stomach were swollen and not functioning properly. The food was simply not being absorbed and then ended up going back up the esophagus and coughed out. He did not have a normal bowel movement for 10 days, so that cannot have helped flow through the intestines either. What is the recommended course in such cases?
