Common Questions and Answers about Vomiting and the esophagus

vomiting

Avatar f tn I had to leave college at one point and had many years of counseling. Even at the time I was vomiting all of the time I was worried about the damage I was probably doing to my esophagus. Even though it's been many years since I have been bulimic, and don't seem to have any problems now or in the past with gastric reflux, I am still wondering if it would be a good idea to be evaluated for barrett's esophagus.
634590 tn?1293774093 Causes The upper GI tract includes the stomach, mouth, throat, esophagus, and the first part of the small intestine. Blood that is vomited may come from any one of these places. For example, vomiting that is very forceful or continues for a very long time may cause a tear in the small blood vessels of the throat or the esophagus, producing streaks of blood in the vomit. ☞ Swollen veins in the walls of the lower part of the esophagus, and sometimes the stomach, may begin to bleed.
Avatar f tn My daughter is 17. She has a number of health conditions: Bipolar, PTSD, asthma, and migraines. She also suffered a severe concussion 2 years ago. It took months for her to be able to pass the concussion test. In August, she started vomiting daily, up to 7 times a day. Her pcp tried some medicine and referred her to a GI specialist. She was down to 104 lbs (5'3") from 112. An upper GI suggested possible SMA. (She had no pain at all) They were going to scope and place an NG tube.
Avatar f tn I was violently sick at all hours of the day and night for almost 4 months. With the medicine try lemon water and spermint mints it helps reduce neasua greatly, at least for me.
Avatar f tn Essentially, they take the top portion of your stomach (the fundus) and wrap it around the junction of the esophagus and the stomach to 'tighten up' the lower esophageal sphincter to prevent the movement of acid from the stomach to the esophagus. But if you're vomiting bile, that's not the same thing as vomiting acid. Have you found a reason for the bile reflux? Have you had your gallbladder checked?
Avatar f tn Were xrays taken of the chest and neck? Endoscopy may be needed to look in her throat and esophagus if she is having difficulty swallowing. It may be that she is just nauseous also, the movement they make with their head when they are nauseated by the food can look like difficulty swallowing. Endoscopy would also help to look into the stomach and first part of the intestinal tract and take biopsies. Have you tried canned cat food?
Avatar n tn i have a 4 yr old daughter that awoke screaming one nite vomiting and had ulcers in her mouth and lesions on her lips, we rushed her to the er she was diagnosed with stomititis and tonsilitis in december 07 she has also had a slight case of diahrea since september 07, after treatment she continued to complain of stomach pain, she was prescribed prevacid for the stomach pain, after a couple of weeks she begain to vomit when she tried to eat so her doctor put her on liquids, after another week she
Avatar n tn I would think it's more dangerous to vomit causing contractions than eating solid food to push it down. If you have a problem choking or the feeling of something stuck either chewing problems or such, it is just something you need to be more careful about when eating, smaller bites, ect.. I've gotten vitamins stuck where water would not push them down and gagged like I will vomit, I just hold my breath and take apple sauce to wash it down.
Avatar f tn My Tazz has always had a very small amount of "people" food as well as her dry kibble. Veggies. eggs, rice, and meat or chicken. For the past few months after she "washes the plates" she immediatly vomits. If she only has dry kibble, she doesn't vomit. Could this be indicative of a liver or kidney problem? The vet said she is in excellent physical condition, not overweight, and her teeth look good.
Avatar m tn Lung infections like pneumonia and bronchitis can irritate the diaphragm and cause vomiting. Pancreatitis is another entity diagnosed by blood tests and ultrasound. Renal stones can cause vomiting and pain. The stones may be too small to be picked up by an ultrasound. Inflammatory bowel diseases and gall bladder diseases can also be the culprits. Discuss these options with your doctor when you happen to meet him.
Avatar n tn A problem that can be confused with vomiting is regurgitation, which is the ejection of contents of the esophagus. Food moves quickly through the esophagus to get to the stomach. If the muscle of the esophagus loses tone, the esophagus dilates (Megaesophagus). A dilated esophagus does not effectively move food to the stomach and the animal will regurgitate food usually shortly after eating. You might want to take him to the vet.
Avatar m tn After one year of vomiting once a day early in the morning and being treated with prednisone and cerenia, still vomiting. No weight loss, no loss of appetite. Have had extensive blood tests, xrays, worming, etc. Daily prednisone causes diahhrea so we give it every 3 or 4 days. Lasts for a while and then starts up again. Help!
Avatar f tn I had severe nausea almost my whole pregnancy and i threw up blood many times, went to the er and they told me it was normal because the stomach and esophagus are very irritated because of the constant vomiting.
Avatar n tn Causes may be lying in esophagus, stomach or duodenum like bleeding ulcers, varices, Mallory-Weiss syndrome (esophageal tear),inflammation of any of the three, irritation or erosion of the lining of the esophagus or stomach, vascular malfunctions of the gastrointestinal tract and tumors of the stomach or esophagus. Sometimes,it may be due to vomiting of ingested blood after hemorrhage in the oral cavity, nose or throat.
Avatar m tn Is she an over-eater or an under-eater? Aspirin, ibuprofen, alchohol are very hard on the lining of the esophagus and stomach. More so if there is not enough food to absorb it.
Avatar f tn Hey ladies. I was wondering if you guys had any other ways to calm the unending vomiting. I'm currently 13w2d, and for the past few days I've been puking up almost everything I eat. I managed to keep a sandwich down yesterday, but the day before that, everything I ate, I lost. And today, I ate cereal, and of course that's gone now.
Avatar n tn I absolutely agree with CalGal -- I developed severe reflux about 2 years ago and had that same feeling in my throat. The usual meds (Tagamet and Nexium) did nothing for me. The docs suspected a stomach ulcer (which is usually treated with antacid meds and a combination of antibiotics, but also takes time to heal) or a reflux disorder. I still don't have a diagnosis, but the endoscopy did tell the docs that it wasn't an ulcer, hernia, abscess or other infection.
Avatar f tn Now about two months ago I vomited in the middle of the night. The next day I felt the same pain I had when I had the ulcer. I went back on my previcid and it didn't go away. I went to the doctors. Had some blood work done. Lipase is elevated. 419. I was put on nexium and it is starting to get some what better but my back as before is a little sore after I eat. Should I be concerned. I am going to see a specialist soon but I always get anxiety over this.
Avatar n tn That means stuffed animals, carpets, draperies (you want natural cloth that is untreated), and make sure that there is no mildew on the pillows or mattress. Mold and mildew in the walls may be problematic as well. If you can improve the air quality and give her immune support at the same time, you will really make some progress. (Remember exhaled waste is accumulative, so leaving a window cracked may also be helpful) Many blessings.
Avatar f tn Ive got a pretty good idea that all the throwing up and acidic acid is what caused the sore, but im just trying to make sure, AND what other medical problems could vomiting at least once a day for the past year could do to me.....
657416 tn?1224695925 You'll want to see a gastroenterologist quickly. The nausea may be caused by a large number of things, especially when nausea combined with frequent vomiting. Some that come to mind are gastritis, gastroparesis, and dyspepsia, but there I name but a very, very few. I would bet at there being some kind of stomach lining inflammation (gastritis), which may be caused by things like H. Pylori or by delayed gastric emptying (whether it be due to gastroparesis or dyspepsia.
Avatar n tn I am a male age 60. In the last 6 months I have experienced coughing, choking and mucus for about 30 minutes after eating. I first thought it was related to a food allergy, but I cannot isolate it to any specific food group. I do not experinece and acid reflux or vomiting, just constant choking. This is very irritating and is a bit strange. Does anyone have an idea of the cause or where I should go for resolution.
Avatar f tn The vomiting damaged my LES valve that prevents acid from going to the esophagus, and the acid burned out my vocal chords and also in a a very short time period, eroded the enamel of my teeth. It was suggested by my doctor that indeed, the change of the cells that causes Barretts also blunts the usual pain symptom of GERD. I had surgery to repair the LES Valve and HH. Often, gall bladder problems present with violent vomiting, I wonder if this is what happened with you?
Avatar f tn Others will have it intermitantly throughout the entire pregnancy and others that are even more lucky have it non-stop till the day they deliver. You will also likely have nausea/vomiting again in the third trimester, because the baby pushes on your stomach and other organs forcing food and acid back up your esophagus. A way to help is eat small, frequent meals (around 6) instead of 3 large meals.
Avatar m tn Esophagitis is best diagnosed with endoscopy, which allows actual visualization of the esophagus with a camera, and a stricture can be visualized with a barium swallow and xrays of the esophagus. Megaesophagus (a weak, dilated esophagus) can also cause regurgitation, and would also be visible with a barium swallow. 4. Has his diet changed to a different food or formula which may have an new ingredient that he does not tolerate?
2043760 tn?1330016594 This could be a partial obstruction The other causes could be GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), where the acid contents of the stomach came up into the esophagus and peptic ulcer disease. Please consult your primary care physician for further evaluation. In the meantime take oral fluids. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Avatar f tn It will help the esophagus muscles and tummy muscles relax so that the vomiting stops. It also clears the tummy of bacteria or virus. Sip it if she is still vomiting. If not vomiting, drink it like a reg cup of tea. If she gets nauseas, you can buy what is called anti-nausea liquid at Longs Drugs. It is merely coke syrup. Yes,....coca cola syrup....no fizz. Resolves nausea instantly and very safe!
Avatar f tn ve been off the prednisone for 11 weeks and my diarrhea and vomiting are back. I have seen 7 dr,s ( I don't capitilize dr's, because the 7 I've seen are'nt worthy of that respect!) Can anyone help me? I would sure appriciate any input. Thank you in advance and I hope good health for you!!
Avatar f tn Generally if it's a very little bit of blood, it's not a cause for alarm. Especially if you've been vomiting a lot (say a 3+ times a day). Your esophagus could be irritated. It's the same concept with coughing. Our esophagus is durable but sensitive. Depending upon what you're eating daily also, if it's acidic than you're vomiting that up with the natural stomach acid that's in your stomach. The stomach acid helps break down food upon ingestion.
