Long term (2+ years) supplementation of 500-5,000mg/day will result in medical issues, such as neuropathy which maybe reversible with discontinuing the supplement and lowering high B6 foods. The recommended daily dose is 1.3mg for men & women ages 19-50 and 1.7 for men >50 years old.
Avatar n tn From what you have stated in your question, you are at the upper limits for vitamin C and E, decrease Zinc to 40mg, and suggest not increasing the other doses. You did not state the vitamin Bs you are taking. Vitamin B6 recommended dose for Adult male is 1.3mg a day (upper limit 100mg), and Niacin 16 mg a day (upper limit 35mg). You stated that you were having muscle problems, are you eating enough potassium foods (oranges, orange juice, potatoes, bananas, etc)?
Avatar n tn Any time I try and take any type of vitamin supplements within a week I start getting a runny nose and become congested. If I continue it gets worse. When I stop taking the supplement the "cold" goes away. I have food allergies as well as airborne allergies so I know I'm allergic to something in them but I can't figure out what. I am 36 and as I approach 40 and menopause I would like to be able to take some supplements but the "cold" keeps me from it.
Avatar m tn You could avoid supplements that contain B6 and limit your intake of foods rich in vitamin B6, such as fortified cereal, bananas, salmon, turkey, chicken, potatoes, spinach and hazelnuts.

It is not what you are putting into your mouths that is leading to the elevated levels, but certainly the extra B6 you are consuming is further aggravating the issue. Avatar f tn I heard progesterone supplements have trouble working if your vitamin b levels are low. Vitamin b6 especially goes hand in hand with progesterone. And for vitamin b6 to work, you have to take it with other vitamin b's, like a prenatal or b complex. I'm taking vitamin b6 along with my prenatal.

Avatar f tn There is a condition called B12 anemia. I don't think you're that low, but the way to do this is to eat better, for starters. If you're a vegetarian, that explains the B12 shortage -- it's found largely in animal food. And make sure your supplement is the methylcobalamin form, not the cyanocobalamin form -- the methyl form is much more absorbable. Also, taking a sublingual will absorb better and more quickly, and you can take a whole lot more than 50mcg.

429432 tn?1343594190 Also I am taking 5-HTP vitamin supplement to help with the depression and a B6 supplement. A multi vitamin once a day as well. Plenty of exercise, warm baths, funny movies...anything that helps. I am on day 8 of wd's and the depression has settled in but it goes away in time. Try some of those they may help. Avatar m tn I have done a medline search for articles that involve controlled trials of Vitamin B6 and cognition or mood. There are a few studies on this topic but none of them found a difference between Vitamin B6 and placebo on mood. On the other hand, as Jaquta said, there are enough reports of short term mood enhancing effects of B vitamins that it is hard to dismiss the experience as a placebo response.

Avatar m tn About a year ago I saw a doctor who thought I should start taking supplements. There were a bunch of things but the culprit was a b6 supplement of about 70 per day. This was below the limit of of 100 but I still ended up with this high amount of b6 in my blood and certainly have toxicity symptoms. My doc says it is not the B6 supplement but cannot come up with another reason for the symptoms.

A lot of energy drinks, protein shakes, diet drinks and foods aren't required (to my knowledge) to list that they have B6 in them, but they sneak them in there. Most cereals in the US and Canada are fortified with Folic Acid and B6.
