Common Questions and Answers about Vioxx problems

vioxx

Avatar f tn There was no money exchanged or special consideration given to get Vioxx on the market. However, Vioxx is a good example of a study not digging deep enough into long term effects of a new drug. Vioxx was introduced in 1999 and was originally thought of as a treatment for polyps in the intestinal track.
Avatar n tn But this time I am going to ask the GP to try for Gout immediately (VIOXX and/or Allopurinol for Uric Acid/Gout). I notice it seems to reoccur every 5 years. Advice appreciated?
Avatar m tn COX-2 inhibitors have been associated with some liver dysfunction, although not as commonly as other NSAIDs. Recently, Vioxx has been removed from the market due to heart-related problems. Celebrex and Bextra are currently being investigated for similar heart-related toxicities. It is recommended that people with liver disease avoid using all NSAIDs.
Avatar m tn t get me wrong, I have compassion and feel badly for those who have problems from medications and for their families, but we know the chances and the risks we take.
Avatar n tn Symptons are always have been cold, tired, joint and muscle pain worse in fingers, I took Vioxx before it was removed , high blood pressure , tinnitus, completely deaf over 2,500 cycles in both ears. Hearing aids made no difference. Dentist last month couldn't freeze my gums with 2 needles of Carbocaine. 7mm nodule on thyroid. Blood tests TSH 2.15 ( range .465 to 4.68 ) FT4 11.17 ( range 10 to 28.2 ) Total T3 2.02 ( range .92 to 2.
Avatar n tn I had a DVT that went through my heart and into my lungs(PE). A valve was damaged, also one chanber of my heart. My problem is that I wasn't diagnosed as a "heart attack", but rather a "pulmonary embolism", and the lawyers representing me in my vioxx lawsuit say it has to be a heart attack, not a PE. Isn't a heart attack part of a PE? Rather, did I suffer a heart attack as well as a pulmonary embolism?
429432 tn?1343594190 Years ago, she gave me Vioxx, I read the warning leaflet and threw the pills in the trash. I was right, they were pulled off the market later on. I'm not sure about this either...

Avatar n tn [2] A series of small-scale studies completed in Germany found that H. procumbens was indistinguishable from Vioxx in the treatment of chronic low back pain,[3] and was well-tolerated after more than four years of treatment of H. procumbens alone.[4] H. procumbens also seems efficacious in the treatment of arthritis-caused hip and knee pain.

Avatar m tn Celebrex is the only medication that does not go down the COX-1 pathway very much. Others were developed (Vioxx and Bextra), but then recalled due to issues with people having heart problems. So, if you do not have GI bleeding or an ulcer, you may want to ask your doctor about other NSAIDS. Mobic (the generic name is meloxicam) is a great alternative, because it is generic and has less GI/ulcer problems than most of the NSAIDS. Ultimately, you should see what your doctor thinks is best for you.
Avatar f tn Hello fellow Kentuckian the ulcers reflux, gastritis, could be related to your gallbladder issues-which I would suspect because of your functioning % in addition to the other problems. Other possible causes of the ulcers: crohn's disease, peptic ulcer disease,-caused by nonsteriodal antiinflammatory medication usage or H.
Avatar n tn ive bin having bad pain and cant function normal .im always in pain and my two arms go numb to the fingers. i take vioxx, a pain patch, and neurotin. but that doesent seem to be helping its going on two years and im going mad, what can i do.
973741 tn?1342342773 As far as I can tell, this is only a problem if you have hypertension. If you have normal blood pressure, the rise isn't going to affect you that much. Celebrex and Vioxx are far more connected to major heart events, again as far as I'm aware.
Avatar m tn Recently, Vioxx has been removed from the market due to heart-related problems. Celebrex and Bextra are currently being investigated for similar heart-related toxicities. It is recommended that people with liver disease avoid using all NSAIDs. If NSAIDs are medically required for the treatment of another medical disorder, a reduced dose should be used for a limited period of time and only by people with stable liver disease.
Avatar f tn There are three different COX-2 inhibitors currently available to the public– Vioxx, Celebrex and Bextra. COX-2 inhibitors have been associated with some liver dysfunction, although not as commonly as other NSAIDs. Recently, Vioxx has been removed from the market due to heart-related problems. Celebrex and Bextra are currently being investigated for similar heart-related toxicities. Cheers!
Avatar n tn The neurosurgeon thought differently and traction, PT and Vioxx helped for some time. After vioxx was taken away the neck deteriorated and surgeon said I would be a quad if I didn't have fusion done. A couple of weeks before surgery I woke up and tried to get out of bed, collasped due to numbness and weakness in legs. Got better as day progressed. Surgery seemed to make right arm pain better. Other symptoms have come and gone, through the years.
Avatar f tn In that same period of time, 490,000 people have died from prescription drugs, not counting the Vioxx scandal. That means that prescription drugs in this country are at least 16,400 percent deadlier than terrorism. Again, those are the conservative numbers. A more realistic number, which would include deaths from over-the-counter drugs, makes drug consumption 32,000 percent deadlier than terrorism. But the scope of "Death by Medicine" is even wider.
Avatar f tn neurontin and lyrica for nerve pain, aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, celebrex, vioxx, midol, dozens of different types of opiates both synthetic and derived from the poppy, marijuana, kava, willow bark, turmeric, ginger, benzos, nitrous oxide gas, ether, and that's just again not even thinking hard about it.
Avatar m tn Years ago I tried Vioxx (the non-sulpha version of Celebrex) and wound up in the ER with dangerously high BP. Trouble is, even after I stopped Vioxx my BP never went back to normal. Now I'm on two different BP meds to control it. (Full disclosure: I also have a family history of hypertension.) I took meloxicam for a long time because I could take it along with my BP meds, but eventually my stomach couldn't take it anymore.
Avatar m tn I have a long history of controlling severe headaches and body pains with over the counter pain relievers, and I used to take Vioxx until it was removed from the market. Should I be concerned about kidney damage at this point? I am 62.

Avatar m tn I was even prescribed VIOXX in the States for these symptoms.
Avatar n tn I've had RA since age 5 and never had a problem with blood pressure until I was prescribed Vioxx, the non-sulpha cousin of Celebrex. My BP popped up and has never gone down by itself even though I went off the Vioxx. I take a daily BP med and my NSAID, which is meloxicam (Mobic) doesn't affect my BP too badly. What you also have to be careful of is OTC cold and allergy medications. The only one I can safely take is Mucinex, Coricidin, or prescription guaifenisen (sp?).
Avatar f tn is very painful(to me anyway) i just turned 50 and have other med. problems also, but i have found that nerotin helps alot,it takes a while to get in your system,i take 600 mg. 3x a day, also tramodol also helps but a few find it addictive, which it is.With that being said you may need to get into pain mangement if the pain is t bad to deal with everyday.BUT be carefull opiates(pain pills) are very, very, addictive. There is a fourm on here just for that, best of luck, take care.
487531 tn?1217984348 I was wondering if anyone has been diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica? My dr thinks I might have this and I'm wondering what the treatments are? He thinks I have that or it might be Chiari Frommel syndrome. Here is a background on my symptoms: I had a daughter 9 weeks ago. While I was pregnant I suffered from sciatic nerve problems. Now I'm still having problems but the pain is not the same as with the sciatic nerve.
