Common Questions and Answers about Vicodin tolerance

Avatar f tn I had my hysterectomy about 20 yrs ago (total) and was sore for about a week. The sex was the same...especially if your partner knows about great foreplay. I also want to comment about the year on Vicodin....I had knee surgery a couple of months ago & asked the surgeon what pain meds I'd receive. I have been on Vicoden 1and a half years for arthritis...so the surgeon says "Well, you're addicted to pain killers....and I will only give you Norco 3.25!
Avatar f tn I have been taking 5-6 Vicodin, 5-6 Phenergan, 5-6 Vistiril and sometimes 1-2 Elavil every day for more than a year for pain and nausea. I guess I am just confused because I don't feel addicted to them because they help me too much. When i dont take them I am in way too much pain to function. My question is that I am supposed to be having surgery so the pain will stop but will i still feel the need to take all these meds?
Avatar m tn I have been taking Vicodin 7.5/325 for several years for disc herniatons, spinal arthritis, disc generation and on top of all of that I was born with venous capillary malformations in my right arm neck and shoulder. These malformations show as bumps inside muscles, near nerves, etc and can be debilitating. I am in a catch 22. If I don't move the arm to get the circulation going, they take longer and longer to feel better.
Avatar m tn Just curious, how did you build up such a tolerance so quickly? I also have abused Vicodin but I think the most I have ever taken in one day is 10. I have been abusing them on and off for almost three years.
Avatar f tn t have had any kind of withdrawal going to Percocet from Vicodin. Whatever occured was unrelated. Percocet is stronger than Vicodin. Try not to over think this. It will be what it is...it won't be the worst thing you'll go through. Just not pleasant. It's truly like having the flu...
Avatar f tn The physical aspect of opiates (tolerance and withdrawal) are common to every opiate user. Addiction is not. But, your tolerance will continue to climb over time until stronger and stronger opiates are needed. It's just how they work. Will you become an addict? Not necessarily. You will become dependent, however.
Avatar m tn I've just come off 180 mg oxycodone plus 4 ES Vicodin per day and am told by the addictionologist that since my body has built up a tolerance to those meds, there's nothing else for my pain management other than increasing dosage. As a matter of fact, I currently need knee surgery and they don't want to do it because they fear not being able to control the pain during recovery. Could this be true? It is also my understanding that my tolerance to the pain meds will not return, i.e.
1295973 tn?1279756268 Anyone will go through withdrawal who has developed tolerance, but not everyone who develops tolerance is an addict. Clear as mud, right?! Doctors refer patients to pain specialists when the pain is long-standing and does not respond to more conservative treatment. Tolerance and addiction issues are part of the scope of practice for pain specialists whereas other doctors may not be so well-versed in those areas.
Avatar f tn had severe tooth issues that required pain mers for almost a month. about 4-6 vicodin a day 7/750. I had also been having severe back pain that my doctor's completely ignored. ~ found the vicodin helped me to be more flexible. overtime they are less effective. what is the best way to detoX off of them at home? I do not get support from my doctors and haven't received any help with the back pain. if the dosage is low, about 6 or less per day, how long will a detoX last?
Avatar m tn Rushed to hospital and surgery on both ankles. Then flew home on oxycodone and then to vicodin. Then, 8 months later, had a torn ligament in one of my ankles, and yes, another surgery. So I'm finally healed BUT now I still use one 5mg of hydrocodone a day. I have low depression, take Paxil, but have found that one pill, sometimes just half, give me incentive, otherwise I sleep and am sluggish. Had a active lifestyle, working, riding horses, and just before these accidents retired.
Avatar f tn can prolonged use of Vicodin ES actually make your pain worse..
Avatar f tn Please help me. I am 34 and recently diagnosed with Porphyria, a rare blood disease. With porphyria comes severe abd pain. Needless to say, I've been taking vicodin (loratab) for four months now for pain but am no longing in pain and still taking loratab. I want to stop and am having a hard time. I'm down to 2 a day but just can't stop this. Any suggestions...
Avatar m tn I'm guessing it has nothing to do with switching up how you took them. I'm guessing it has to do with tolerance. After being on pain meds for awhile our bodies build a tolerance towards them. We have to keep taking more and more to get the same effect. As far as why you are feeling the withdrawals...you are physically dependent on them. You don't have to be an addict to have withdrawals. Anyone that is on narcotics long enough will have withdrawals if they stop taking their meds.
Avatar n tn 5 mg vicodin every 4 hours around the clock, and more if she can get her hands on it....she is a new dialysis patient, has chronic neck pain (degeneration), and just this week she entered a nursing home for rehabilitation (our suggestion). Long story short, she is 70, a recovered alcoholic (dry 15 yrs.) and during that time she also had been addicted to prescription drugs (vicodin, librium).
Avatar n tn If you're stupid, then the rest of us might as well have no brains at all :) Right now you are taking a "safe" amount of Vicodin (in general; your specific needs/body may say that it's not safe). You've stopped feeling the energy it gives you because you're building a tolerance. That's the problem with taking Vicodin every day. You build a tolerance and need more to get the same effects.
Avatar n tn About 5 years ago , I was 25. I was partying maybe 3-4 times per week on vicodin 10mg pills. I built up a decent tolerance as sometimes I would drop up to 12 pills in a night. The usual amount though was around 6 or so. I remember on 2 instances , I had absolutely excruciating pain in my chest. I also was gasping for air , and sweating . I thought it was the end man . I remember thinking of my mother.. The weird thing is , those 2 times , I only fropped about 4 pills.
Avatar f tn I recently had surgery and was taking 5/325mg oxycodones for about two weeks. I was only prescribed 30 pills and was still in a lot of pain at my follow up appointment so the surgeon authorized me to have a refill. I suffered from some complications while my incision was healing and at my 6 week appointment asked what I could take for pain because OTC meds just don't do anything for me.
Avatar m tn ve been on some pain meds for a back problem for a while now, so I do have some tolerance, but today was a particularly bad day after recovering from surgery. I've been on Vicodin (about 3-6 a day for about a year now) and then a month or so on Oxycodone after spinal surgery. Now as Im recovering they moved me back down to Vicodin, which is good so I dont get so tired from the meds, but today I was in a lot of pain. In the past 14ish hours I had to take about 8 or 9 Vicodin 5-325's.
Avatar m tn I have been using vicodin as needed for the past few years for a condition in my spine. Never had a problem until this past flair up. The Dr. upped my prescription and my tolerance must have increased. Anyway, over the past 2 weeks I have been weaning myself and went from 10 regular strength per day to 2 Ultram per day, to ease the withdrawals as my body adjusts. I’ve got 4 ultram left. I’m assuming I should go down to 1 ½ tomorrow, 1 the next day and then ½ for 2 days. Does that sound right?
Avatar f tn Vicodin is a higher pain killer than tramadol. Tramadol to me is no different to tylenol, then i have some friends that are addicted to it. I am coming off of vicodin and i dont sugest anyone take it for any periods of time. I dont know your story but if possible i would stray from vicodin. LIke i said i have used them both and vicodin gave the the pain relief and the "high" i was looking for tramadol didnt even touch the pain.
8475475 tn?1403476630 I was given 800mg ibuprofen when I was sent home as well as oxycodone
Avatar f tn s father insists that he is completely unaffected my taking 10 pills of vicodin at 350 mg each, Robaxin and welbuterin. My son is 5 is there anyway he telly can function as an effective parent? He drives him everywhere it scares me do death. I spoke with an attorney he said unless he is arrested for heroin the court really won't limit custody.
Avatar f tn My cat (male) is 9 months old and my roommate is prescribed vicodin. Her tolerance is low and can only take half of a pill at a time and when she cut it, the half (that she wasnt taking) had a few pieces crumble off the edge. She accidentally left it on the counter and he licked up some of the crumbled pieces (they were very very small).
Avatar m tn m wondering is whether taking this amount of vicodin this regularly will lead to tolerance or addiction.
6884999 tn?1385764179 thank you I had no idea tramadol was like this I am up to 4 to 5 a day vicodin 10 miligrams each and 2 tramadol so I thaught increase tramadol lower vicodin God am I glad I found this site.
1287128 tn?1331134538 Yep, that's Vicodin for you,...turns you into superwoman! If you're even thinking of taking Vicodin to help your anxiety, and other issues....don't give it another thought. You will go down a very ugly road. Essentially what you would be doing is self medicating with a habit forming drug. Before long, you'll find you need more and more to acheive that same level you initially were at. That's called tolerance.
2017901 tn?1328639684 t do anything for me but Vicodin does and Percocet is pretty much the same as Vicodin, but stronger. OxyContin is basically the same as Vicodin but w/out the Tylenol in it and stronger so go figure. You may be like me and have a really high tolerance or different pain meds work differently for you even if they are stronger. Have you tried not taking the pain meds and possibly something OTC? I just would really hate to see you become addicted.
