Avatar f tn org/posts/Healthy-Cooking/Smoothies/show/2152584 One cup of cooked soybeans has 29 grams of protein, according to The Vegetarian Resource Group. Soy products, such as tofu and tempeh, are derived from the soybean, and can replace meat in some recipes. An expanding market for soy products means you can find soy hot dogs, burgers, bacon and sausage at your super market. Beans, like black, kidney, lima and baked beans all have more than 10 grams of protein per cup.
1201598 tn?1265473722 You are going to have to work a little harder to get that protein in but it can be done. Do your homework and study up on a vegetarian lifestyle. Some ways you can get protein is soy, nuts and beans. My teenage daughter wanted to be a vegetarian for a few years so I had to learn how to cook vegetarian. She's not doing it so much anymore but I still use soy, like the soy crumbles in soups or the firm tofu in veggie stir fries. She also likes the Boca burgers, which is a soy burger.

Avatar m tn From the weight you wrote, you are approximately 30lbs underweight for your height. You do need extra nutrients to gain some weight. From the literature, ITP is not a diet related disease or triggered by diet. You can take supplements, however, you would benefit more from the foods you eat. Avatar f tn Seeds -- hemp seeds most complete vegetable protein, even more complete than soy. Whole grain pasta -- you can get it made out of brown rice, spelt, kamut, amaranth, even with protein added from legumes. There's a world of food out there. You need to buy a couple really good vegetarian books so you learn that just being vegetarian isn't a healthy way to live, it only works if, first, it suits your digestive system, and second, you learn to get the nutrients you need from it.
Avatar f tn Well - you have got to have a liquid - so the options are water, milk, or soy/almond/rice/coconut milk. Then you have to have some source of protein. Other than protein powder, you are pretty limited. You don't want to use raw egg. You could use nuts or peanut butter. Other sources of protein such as cooked meat or fish wouldn't be particularly appetizing in a smoothie.
Avatar f tn Soy products/tofu are good sources of protein, however, if you have thyroid issues, you should not eat/drink soy. Beans and legumes are also good sources of protein, as are eggs, dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt) and whole grains. I don't eat soy, a lot of beans or legumes, so, unfortunately, I can't provide recipes, but you can do a search.
Avatar f tn Protein is an essential part of your diet and if you are skipping meat then you should try something like tofu or similar non vegetarian protein food to aid in your weight loss. Not only protein can curb your hunger but also can help you build muscles ( if you are working out) to burn more calories.
Avatar n tn You can get iron from beets and dark green vegetables, especially parsley, but iron probably wouldn't affect your hair as much as your energy level, so you'd know if you were iron deficient. The most likely elements missing with hair would be silica and protein, but that would usually show by losing hair, not it becoming limp and greasy. You can try buying a hair and skin supplement -- it's a multivitamin for hair and skin. Ultra Hair by Nature's Plus is a good one.
Avatar n tn There are many good vegetarian protein sources. Nuts, beans, higher protein whole grains and seeds and grain-like foods. I'd go buy a few books on vegetarian cooking. But know that not everyone is equipped to do well as a vegetarian -- most vegetarians do it for ideological reasons and it is harder to get all your nutrients as a vegetarian, particularly methionine and B12, so you do have to learn how to do it well.
