Varicose veins and venous insufficiency

Common Questions and Answers about Varicose veins and venous insufficiency

varicose-veins

Avatar m tn Varicose veins usually result from failures in valves in veins connecting the superficial veins to the deep system in your legs. This is a mechanical problem. No medicine can restore this function. Horse chestnut extracts have been studied and appear to decrease the swelling due to venous insufficiency but the appearance is unchanged.
1907180 tn?1329450777 I am not sure if I have varicose veins or not. I am around 50 lbs overweight and 6 1/2 weeks pregnant. My legs are aching really bad from the knees to my ankles. I do have some small prominent blue bulging veins near the surface, but they have been there for years and never hurt. Can a person have them so deep that you can't see it? I fell last week and have some very deep and large contusions on the front of my right leg. My calves seem to be slightly swollen, but my ankles are normal.
927365 tn?1245748499 Treatment of leg veins can be performed by injection of sclerosing agents into the veins and external lasers that work specifically for leg veins. In addition, treatment of underlying venous insufficiency of the deep venous system may be appropriate. The use if internal lasers can now be used in place of traditional vein stripping. You need to consult with a vascular surgeon or plastic surgeon in your area with expertise in this area.
Avatar f tn His feet and ankles are swollen and have an extreme burning and tingling pain to them. His veins are dark and puffy and look like they are clotting together. I have attached a picture and would greatly appreciate any information or tips. It seems to get worse at night after he has been on his feet all day.
Avatar n tn Also, venous congestion due to either varicose veins or incompetent valves may also lead to heaviness in legs. Do you have swelling in legs or feet?
Avatar m tn As it pertains to heart attack and/or stroke. Severe venous insufficiency is pooling of blood in the veins that slows the return of blood to the heart. This condition can cause blood clots and severe infections. Blood clots can be very dangerous because they can move from leg veins and travel to the lungs. Blood clots in the lungs are life-threatening because they can block the heart and lungs from functioning. An aneurysm of a leg vessel is a varicose.
Avatar n tn If the condition is local and not systemic the most common local conditions that cause edema are varicose veins and thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the veins) of the deep veins of the legs. These conditions can cause inadequate pumping of the blood by the veins (venous insufficiency). The resulting increased back-pressure in the veins forces fluid stay in the extremities (especially the ankles and feet). The excess fluid then leaks into the interstitial tissue spaces, causing edema.
338416 tn?1420045702 I posted about the chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency hypothesis at http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Multiple-Sclerosis/Interesting-takes-on-the-etiology-of-MS/show/986162 and Quix gave a good plain English explanation of venous insufficiency. The authors of the article at http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/picrender.fcgi?
Avatar n tn Studies have found that horse chestnut seed extract is beneficial in treating chronic venous insufficiency. There is also preliminary evidence that horse chestnut seed extract may be as effective as wearing compression stockings. There is not enough scientific evidence to support the use of horse chestnut seed, leaf, or bark for any other conditions.
Avatar f tn If kidney, heart and liver problems have been taken care of, then the pain and swelling in the legs could be due to varicose veins with faulty valves of the deep vein causing venous pooling. A dopplar study or angiogram of the blood vessels of the leg should be done. Wearing a hose or stocking specially designed for varicose veins may help. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn Blood clot, Leg infection, Venous insufficiency (when the veins in legs are unable to adequately pump blood back to the heart), Varicose veins, Burns (including sunburn), Malnutrition, Blockage of the lymph nodes in the legs (lymphatic obstruction), Certain medications may also cause legs to swell: Hormones like estrogen (in birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy) and testosterone, Blood pressure medicines called calcium channel blockers (such as nifedipine, amlodipine, diltiazem,
Avatar m tn The causes could be related to heart like congestive heart failure, cardiovascluar disease, cardiomyopathy, chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, endocarditis, etcHyponatremia, hypothyroidism, kidney failure, liver failure are few other possibilities. Does he also have other symptoms like difficulty in breathing, ankle swelling etc?He needs medical help ASAP.Tests like electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, lipid profile, kidney function tests, liver function tests, serum electrolytes may be needed.
Avatar f tn I have a varicose vein on my leg (on back of my quad), I'm only 21 years old and it is slowly spreading slightly onto my calf muscle now. It is also beginning to ache.Would I be priority in having it removed or will doctors just leave it as it is?
1255761 tn?1294681089 If the vessel loses the ability to properly function some blood volume and pressures may cause varicose veins. If the blood return to the heart is severely impeded, that can increase the blood voume and increased work for the heart.
Avatar f tn We'll look forward to seeing your current labs; you can post the results and reference ranges as soon as you get them, then we'll be able to see exactly what your thyroid levels are. That will help us tell how much your thyroid might be contributing to your swelling/edema. If you're already staying off wheat (gluten) and dairy, soy, peanuts, sugar and corn, it sounds like you pretty much have the biggest offenders covered.
Avatar m tn This is a normal physiologic response but becomes exaggerated with obesity or with any impairment of venous blood flow from the legs, such as venous insufficiency and/or venous obstruction.
Avatar f tn I get that achiness where I feel like im coming down with something and I never get a full blown cold. My joints ache especially in my heels and they swell from the knees down. Muscle cramps. Ive noticed my face and hands do too sometimes. I run out of breath easily and my heart races alot. I get really bad headaches and some days I can't handle being awake for more than 4 or 5 hours. And then I have a hard time thinking. Even my abdomen swells and I look pregnant though im not.
Avatar n tn s are surface manifestations of an underlying venous insufficiency syndrome, characterized by dilated and tortuous vascular channels on the leg are spider vein's. The veins dilate under the influence of increased venous pressure, most often resulting from venous insufficiency, increased venous pressure from outflow obstruction, changes during pregnancy caused by hormonal changes rendering vein wall and the valves more pliable could be some of the causes.
Avatar f tn They are working on unusually swollen / varicose veins close to the spinal cord, and jugular vein in relation to how it affects the circulation and induces sporadic lethargy and later neurological complications. Their research relates to multiple sclerosis, but I suspect this abnormality might be responsible for inducing other illnesses and symptoms so it could be worth having a doplar scan to see if there are any unusual bulges and kinks in the veins.
Avatar m tn -I was squinting under eye muscles almost all the time as a attempt to cover up spider veins, and worked until the varicose veins came up a little while after i began to do that. -Used to be in front of a computer screen a extremely large proportion of the day from about 5th to 8th grade, and still quite a bit but not near as much. -Started lifting weights at about 16.
333672 tn?1273792789 Then the blood re-collects into the drainage system of the veins (the venous system) and collects into ever larger vessels and returns to the heart. In the analogy the river nourishes the fields of the valley, collects into a drainage system and then makes it's way on out of the valley on it's way to continue the cycle. In "venous insufficiency" the drainage system is inadequate. The blood cannot drain off like it needs to and it backs up.
Avatar m tn These conditions can cause inadequate pumping of the blood by the veins (venous insufficiency). You need to get your cardiac status also checked as mentioned earlier. You should indulge in moderate exercises like walking, avoid prolonged standing and avoid sitting with the feet dependent.Decrease salt intake and drink plenty of water. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar f tn In response to your question, the varicose veins are blown out veins carrying blood backwards and adding to the burden of the normal veins. Getting them out of the system lightens the load on the normal ones. The only exception is when the deep venous system is occluded and the varicosity is the only way blood can return to the heart. This should be obvious with an appropriate duplex doppler study.
1958640 tn?1343222499 I had serious varicose veins, mainly running down my ankles to my feet. There was a purplish sack of blood hanging from both of my inner ankles. The skin was beginning to flake and I was apprehensive about developing ulcers. The problem runs in my family. A brother solved the problem with support hose and one of my sisters had vein ligations. My condition was the worst. About two years from when my veins were at their most unsightly the varicosities completely disappeared.
Avatar f tn Hi Varicose veins can also cause venous pooling as they are the result of either faulty valves or deep vein thrombus. While at work, keep your feet raised on a stool or something and move about once in a while to allow the leg muscles to contract. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn My mother has similar problems with her legs, and both of us bruise like tomatoes. While both my mom and I do also suffer from varicose and spider veins, this is NOT what my question is about. I am trying to determine the cause of (and hopefully treat) the all-over reddish honeycomb pattern. Has anyone heard or seen or experienced this?
382218 tn?1341181487 August 2010 Two important new studies challenge the controversial hypothesis that venous congestion—chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI)—contributes to the development of multiple sclerosis (MS). This theory has resulted in many MS patients receiving experimental endovascular angioplasty, a treatment for MS unproven by clinical trials.
