Hello, I have oral HSV1 and want to take something daily to help prevent outbreaks and to keep virus at bay. I have a prescription for valtrex, but usually only take when i have an outbreak. Should I take that everyday? Any thoughts on Red Algae or Lysine.. has anyone had success with these? Would anyone recommend to take daily? Also, have been ready about a new light therapy called virulite, anyone heard of this?

Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts. Even cheaper yet, hold an ice cube to the cold sore !

I have had two swabs and three blood test and ALL are negative. I even tried Valtrex which may have one worked 1/6 times i took it. This situation is driving me crazy and I am not sure what to do next. Any guidance would be very appriacted as this issue has caused me severe depression and fear.

Hello, ok so i was tested positive for type 2 genital herpes about 2 years ago, my doc put me on valtrex 500mg/day and i have been out break free for the last 8 months of my life with no problems, befor going on it daily he just told me to take it whenever i felt like i was gonna get an out break it has always worked for me untill just 3 weeks ago, started getting feelings of an out break and doubled my dose, then i got an out break and i was taking it 3 times a day only for like 2 days untill

NOT a cooincidence. i started taking SSRIs a while back and my rarely occurring outbreaks became frequent. i didn't like the side effects, made me apathetic and tired, so i stopped taking them, and lo and behold, the outbreaks went away. some time after that i started taking an over the counter 5-htp supplement which essentially converts to serotonin and the same thing happened - more outbreaks. stopped because i didn't like the same side effects as the SSRIs.

Valtrex doesn't work overnight. Sadly your doctor took the step of shotgun effect with antibotics and valtrex. You won't know which item helped. Something else could be the cause but this point you should ask for a leision culture or a swab for PCR testing of the area in which the pain is located in within 24-48hrs.

My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.

I have not had any outbreaks at all, I occasionally have burning and itching, but beyond that nothing else. I have been on supressive therapy w/ Valtrex since the end of may. OK. So its been nearly 2 months since I've been diagnosed with this inconvenience. Since I never had a "noticeable outbreak", every little itch or tingling that I get spooks me (The reason why I say that is because the time I had sex with my ex, I did have some tingling and 5 days later he had small blisters on his penis, so I know he contracted it from me).

Anyone have success with valtrex alleviating symptoms ?My Dr. prescribed it for 1 week. I also take desipramine (TCA) and have not had any relief from that yet either. It has been 2 weeks. Hello, i had a hsv 1 genital outbreak about a month ago, i have had this for six years and only one outbreak since the first time, my question is, do i really need to stay on the valtrex for surpresive therapy, or would it be smarter to stay on it to avoid giving it to someone else

Have you been seen to get checked for fungal or bacterial infection? You could try an OTC antifungal perhaps and see if that works, or be seen by your medical provider where they can test for it. I too have genital HSV1, and in fact while my first outbreak was a doozy (very painful lesions), I've only had a couple very minor outbreaks since then (it's been about 3 years now). Chances are I may never have another, or if I do, perhaps one every other year or so.

I have been on Valtrex for 8 days now. This is my first breakout. Can I use Polysporin on the sores that are starting to scab over to relief the itching and dryness? Also as a side, I have not been able to urinate without a catheter for 3 days. Could this be a side affect of the Valtrex or swelling of the genital area? My dr prescribed urispa which is a muscle relaxant for the urethra. Hopefully it will work. I also have shooting pains down my legs, shins, and feet.
