Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex long term

valtrex

Avatar f tn //www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/pdf/10.1086/342966?cookieSet=1 is the link to it for reading. I myself have been on acyclovir more than I haven't for the 22 years that I"ve had hsv2. I did switch to valtrex for about a year at one point but ended up going back to acyclovir for multiple reasons. The only times I stopped suppressive therapy once I started it were because of pregnancy and for 6 months I was off while I participated in a research study.
Avatar m tn Just wanted to check on the long term impact of GHSV2 on male. I am getting frequent outbreaks, but they are very mild and get healed within 2days. I have learned to move on with my life as I get to know that I have HSV2 only when I look at it. It has stopped to bother me. Could you please help me answer the below: 1) Does HSV2 cause penile cancer or any other cancer form on long run esp.
Avatar n tn How often do you get ob? Did it get any easier?
Avatar f tn My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it. Anyone else have similar experience or advice? Thanks!
Avatar f tn I have had the HSV 2 virus for 7 years and I never had many problems. Maybe 3 or 4 ob's the whole time. Recently I met a guy who didn't have it and I chose to take valtrex 500 mg a day to suppress the virus. I had at least one ob on the meds in a two month period. I felt the meds were making me worse and we quit seeing each other on a serious level so I went off the meds. One week later an ob.
Avatar m tn My liver enzymes are perfect now. Be careful when taking Valtrex long term, it can inflame your liver.
Avatar n tn Do I risk damage to my kidneys if I take this drug at a 500 milligram dose daily for long term use and is it effective long term? (I understand the study was for eight months, so there is no information on long-term effect after a year on Valtrex. What about other anti-virals? Since they have more track history, I wonder if I should switch to pill that's been out longer, as long as it also will reduce transmission risk?
Avatar m tn why don't you just stay on the suppressive therapy?
Avatar m tn Since she takes valtrex, if you were with her in a long term, monogamous relationship, as long as you avoided sex during an outbreak, there'd be about a 2% chance you would get it over the course of a year. That's a 98% chance you wouldn't get it. You have about the same chance (or worse) of getting a female partner pregnant when she's on the pill. You can do the math for breaking it down into a one time encounter if you want - clearly its a very low chance.
Avatar f tn Valtrex only works while you are taking it. It has no long term effects on your hsv2. Once you stop taking it, all its benefits stop and your hsv2 goes back to its usual shedding rate. There are no known benefits to taking it for 1 1/2 years other than you will have less recurrences during that time and are reducing the odds of transmission to a partner while taking it. keep asking questions!!
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed me valtrex to suppress the virus. Will this actually lower the chance of transmission? Will it have long term side effects on my body?
Avatar f tn I don't always use condoms. I don't use them in long term relationships after a few months either. I get about 1 ob a year while on suppressive therapy . sometimes more if I have a lot of vaginitis issues going on. next time you have one of your bumps you are noticing, try to be seen within 48 hours of its appearance for a lesion culture but they really sound like pimples or even infected hairs or something.
Avatar n tn I just read a question posted by someone that had herpes in more than one place...this can absolutely happen, mine after three years, decided to move down the nerve to a new place on my lower back. Though I have hsv-2 , my lesions have always been on regular skin, and no where else, and yes, this is tested, and true. I began valtex suppressive ther 500mg 2x a day, and where before, I could feel herpes coming on ie: leg pain back pain, etc...
Avatar n tn How long does it take for nerve pain/discomfort to stop after discontinuing Valtrex suppression?
Avatar n tn no he has no idea what he is talking about :( You don' t become immune to valtrex by taking it long term. we have info on the herpes antivirals used suppressively for almost 25 years now ( acyclovir ) and the rates of resistance are the same as they were prior to their use for herpes. no, his having herpes wouldn't have triggered a recurrence in you. was most likely coincidence more than anything. if this red spot doesn't clear up, follow up on it properly with your provider.
1641422 tn?1300798618 You have no idea what the drugs will do in the short term or long term. The pain is terrible, but it passes. Consequences of prednisone may never go away. I know.
Avatar n tn I've had genital herpes for 5 years. I started taking Valtrex daily 4.5 years ago and have not noticed an outbreak since then. My initial outbreaks were not on my penis but in my pubic hair region and resembled pimples. Recently I have had an outbreak that has lasted much longer than I thought it would (a little over two weeks) and has been more widespread than they used to be (more pimples). When the outbreak started, I increased my daily dose of Valtrex.
Avatar f tn ) you can take acyclovir for a lifetime. there are no long term side effects to herpes antivirals. follow up and make sure you don't have a bacterial vaginal infection and go from there. there's no such thing as your body adjusting to herpes. We have plenty of info now that shows that ob's don't dramatically decrease even after 5 years of being infected. shedding stays the same for over 20 years of being infected.
Avatar n tn She tests for both the long-term and short-term antibodies. My test for the long-term antibodies comes back negative but she said the short-term comes back as positive and showing a recent infection. She said some people never make the long-term antibodies and it is possible I've had this infection for a long time but never had symptoms until now.
Avatar n tn We have info on over 25 years of acyclovir without any long term effects ( since valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug, same lack of issues but only 15 years of info on it which is still good ). how often do you see your partner? if it's once a month or more, might as well just take suppressive therapy every single day.
Avatar m tn Just because one has herpes doesn't mean that EVERYTHING is herpes related. Quite honestly swollen/painful gums are not symptomatic of herpes at all. Blisters/lesions are. See your provider for a proper diagnosis.
