Valtrex kidney problems

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex kidney problems

valtrex

Avatar m tn just had liver fibrosis test post tx and in good shape there). The bloodwork was done prior to starting valtrex. No other known health problems other than high blood pressure and genital herpes. - Incidentally, I had full bloodwork done a week or so previous to this happening, and all kidney and organ functions/blood levels were totally normal. - Normal urination and ejaculations after discharge, no pain or unusual sensations in genitals.
Avatar m tn Also, if I take Valtrex 500mg every day for the forseeable future are there any risks? i.e. kidney/liver problems down the track etc? Thanks.
Avatar m tn Since I find I cannot stick to the same specific times to administer it to myself, would 1500mg per day harm me? (No kidney problems.) Or since I did have trouble early on of still getting outbreaks while taking 2 per day in the first yr. or so, best to take 2000mg per day? I will check dosages with my physician. Just would like your opinion. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Side effects with valacyclovir, including liver problems, are extremely rare. Even if Valtrex was the cause of his elevated liver enzymes, most people with mild enzyme elevations do not go on to more serious problems. Most important, stories of rare adverse effects shouldn't change anyone's treatment plan. People don't have greater risk of lightning strikes just because someone else gets struck!
Avatar m tn Is it possible to have a six month prodrome and then just one blister/lesion? Will Valtrex affect blood tests? My uro says 10 days of Valtrex, and then 15 days of no meds, then test IGG and IGM. I am 90% sure this is herpes, but I am hoping to be wrong and the blood tests to be right.
Avatar f tn I will gladly look at any herpes testing you had done. did you have more blood testing done at the other clinic? yes you can still perform oral on your partner. you should not be taking 1 gm of valtrex 3 times a day every single day!!!! You need to stop that immediately!!! I also recommend you have your provider do a kidney panel on you to check kidney function if you've been on that dose for more than a week.
Avatar n tn Prior to that I was taking Valtrex (500 mg) once daily for 18 months. For the past few months I have noticed that my blood pressure is elevated (140s-160s sys over 80s-90s dia). Could the use of acyclovir be causing this? Any insight is appreciated.
Avatar m tn Dude, give me a shout...you should have my number on your messages....
Avatar m tn I would not however worry about valacyclovir toxicity unless you have kidney problems (the drug is excreted by the kidneys and persons with abnormal kidney function tend to have higher blood levels than persons whose kidneys are normal). Acyclovir and valacyclovir (VCV) however are amongst the safest drugs we use, causing few side effects.
Avatar f tn My 29 year old daughter had a severe and frightening reaction to Valtrex. She had cold sores and began taking 500 mg Valtrex, per script. She took one in the am and one in the pm for five days, and as adverse effects appeared, she cut back to one in the pm for four more days. She progressively became psychotic, experiencing altered states of consciousness, panic attacks, uncontrollable crying, tremors, and extreme fear. Blurred vision and the inability to focus were also taking place.
3229560 tn?1347037510 I am going to have my Kidneys and liver function checked every 3 months for now. Valtrex can cause kidney and liver issues, and renal issues, but all medications have a list of side effects, so far I have had no side effects at all, except I feel better, that's a great side effect !!!!
529932 tn?1212867390 Aside from cutting back on the salt and drinking plenty of water, specific foods will also reduce protein the urine and even restore Kidney functions. People have restored their kidney function completely. Here's the program that seems to be getting the best results. Check it out, there's nothing to lose.. http://tinyurl.
Avatar n tn Hey- just a quick question, can any of the tx meds for Hep C cause kidney problems? I just have had some issues lately and was wondering if they could be linked to tx.

1120748 tn?1259272014 hi, My yorkie is 14 & half years & about a month ago was diagnosed with kidney problems. Benji did weigh 7.3 pounds in september but has lost a lot of weight this last month. He has episodes of eating one day then not eating the following day. But this last few days he just dosn`t want to eat anything at all. Iv`e tried him with all the food i can think of. He is on medication for his kidneys but he just isn`t getting it, as he will only take it when it is crushed up in food.
Avatar f tn gfr measures your kidney function.. low filtration rate is suggestive that your kidney has not been working very well.. creatinine is fairly reliable indicator of kidney function.. so the high value of your creatinine may be because of your kidney.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
Avatar m tn I had a kidney transplant 2 months ago. In that time ive also met a girl who told me she has hsv-1 oral from her mom. My concern is that we'd like to get intimate with each other but are hesitating bec of my immune system. We were planning to be extremely safe with her being on valtrex, using protection etc. but still in two mind about it. Does me being on immunosuppresants increase my chances of getting hsv ? I was tested before my surgery and I was never infected with hsv1 or hsv2.
Avatar m tn I am about to go onto Valtrex suppressive treatment 500mg daily. I am visiting Laos/Thailand in Jan 2011 and I have been advised to take anti-malaria tablets while there called Doxycycline. Does anyone know if there is any interaction between these two drugs? Can it make one or the other not work as effectively? Thanks.
Avatar n tn If, instead of discussing these issues openly and frankly with your boyfriend, you are choosing to seek advice on an anonymous forum, then however will you solve your problems. You say that suppressive Valtrex was your choice, - but it sounds like your bf is worried about becoming infected. If so, then perhaps it's time to give him an ultimatum. Does he still want to be with you or not? The herpes - and therefore the issues - won't go away until you both accept your responsabilities.
Avatar m tn I have HSV1 for 20 years and had Valtrex on hand. Immediately took 1g and followed on with 500 mg 2 x day for 5 days. Condom didn't break. It was painless and held clear fluid and was completely gone within 2.5 days. I suspected HSV2. I contacted her and she's claiming to be tested clean. I read you have to wait for a blood test to accurately test for it so I waited until 9 weeks. Results were negative.
Avatar n tn I have had one partner for 2 months and have had unprotected vaginal, anal and oral sex with him from week 2. I started with symptoms that were diagnosed originally as a kidney infection (high fever, body aches, sharp pain in right flank, high WBC's in urine) and was treated about 4 weeks ago. Now starting this past Thursday I started with body aches again, right flank pain etc.
