valtrex

Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with shingles after going to er this morning, i am 38 weeks pregnant, i thought i had poison ivy around my eye but was in allot of pain so went to emergency room to get it checked out, they put me on eye drops and valtrex pills, does anyone know anything that could help our of any complications w pregnancy?
Avatar m tn The medicines are considered very safe in pregnancy, and the protocol is that women with HSV 2 infection, with or without symptoms, get suppressed, not just women with symptoms. If I were you and your wife, I would insist on daily therapy because everything you have read says you can shed the virus without symptoms and you want the most protection possible.
Avatar n tn how far into pregnancy are you at this point? what testing did you have done initially to confirm hsv2?
Avatar f tn Welcome to the forum. I'll try to help. There are two reasons for anti-herpes therapy the last 3-4 weeks of pregnancy in women with histories of genital herpes. First is to prevent a recurrent outbreak that would increase the chance of HSV transmission to the baby and would force an otherwise unnecessary cesarean section. The second is to lower the chance of transmission of HSV to the baby.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Avatar f tn I am due on Wednesday and when I woke up this morning I noticed a little bit of blood on my toilet paper. I checked my vag out in the mirror and noticed what looked like a cut (straight line) near the top part. I called my OB and went in for an appointment. The doctor looked at it and said it just looks like I cut or scratched myself. He performed an internal exam and then looked at my chart and realized that I am on Valtrex because I had an herpes outbreak about 5 years ago.
Avatar m tn Hi! I'm not sure I can be of as much help here as some others can, since I'm new to the forum, and come here for advice myself. However, I am currently just over 34 weeks pregnant with my 3rd baby, and only recently (within the last month or so) learned of the dangers of neonatal herpes. To say it has had me concerned is an understatement!
Avatar f tn t have any studies confirming the safety for suppressive therapy earlier than that in pregnancy. the herpes antivirals are in the same pregnancy category as tylenol as.
Avatar n tn and if it happens, infection that early in pregnancy has no known effect on the baby. (There is a little uncertainty as to whether new HSV early in pregnancy can cause miscarriage -- but if so, it is rare.) The effectiveness of valacyclovir (Valtrex) in preventing transmission of genital HSV-1 has not been studied. HSV-1 is less susceptible to the drug than HSV-2, so we can't be sure it would be as effective as it is for HSV-2.
Avatar f tn I had experienced that in my early pregnancy as well I do believe it's normal
Avatar f tn t have time to produce antibodies to pass on to the baby in vitro. Is it common for women to stay on valtrex the whole pregnancy as opposed to just starting at 36 weeks? I guess there just isn't much research yet on the effects of valtrex on igg testing as I've been told multiple times by different doctors that if I was negative at 17 weeks, I'm negative, the valtrex doesn't matter but researching it myself I find a much different answer. Thanks Grace!
Avatar f tn Now , I think I know why I had a an outbreak-1)change in medication strength 2) being pregnancy and having my immunity lowered. Do you believe that may be the cause. But what I really want to know is why do I still have vaginal irritation? Should I be taking more valtrex?
Avatar f tn I have had GHSV1 for at least 6 years. I was told since it was HSV1 I would have infrequent outbreaks. Which I did for a while. Then last year after giving birth I started to have frequent outbreaks, so my doctor put me on daily Valtrex. A few days ago I felt like I was going to get an outbreak, so I doubled up on my Valtrex and took 500mg twice a day. Today I noticed that my outbreak was certainly there. Is the Valtrex not helping me?
Avatar m tn m wondering if I should be worried about those very, very early doses of Valtrex having kept me from seroconverting. Any thoughts and/or help would be greatly appreciated!
Avatar n tn actually you are too far along in pregnancy to confirm your hsv2 status. testing for herpes in the 3rd trimester has various problems as it is. There isn't any reason to waste your money on a herpes WB at this point. your hsv2 was negative and it's not likely at all that your neck rash is hsv2 related. if it's really important to your gyn, your hubby getting tested would be the next step. did they do a swab of your neck rash to confirm shingles?
Avatar f tn I suffer from cold sores too an had one early in my pregnancy. When I feel one coming and while its there I take lysine its a vitamin. It will help it clear up faster. I had researched it an read to take half the recommended dose but others say all is fine....just thought I would throw that option out there.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, early in the diagnosis, the antivirals can seem ineffective, since the body has not yet generated enough antibodies to help fight the virus. However, this does not mean they're not working and possibly helping to mitigate the effects. Do report back to your doctor that the prescription is not helping, and that you may need to (a) double your dose, (b) try the brand name itself (Valtrex, rather than the generic valacyclovir) or (c) try an entirely different antiviral.
Avatar n tn Yes we do have studies that show that valtrex/acyclovir are both safe for momma and baby during the last month of pregnancy. In fact we don't have a single study anywhere that shows that they aren't safe - it's just erring on the side of caution that suppressive therapy isn't officially ok for the entire pregnancy.
Avatar m tn Too late on valtrex, taking 3 times a day for last 4 days. Could this be why no blisters have appeared?
Avatar f tn I tested positive for HSV2 (genital herpes) in early March. Since then I've been taking 500mg of Valtrex every night and plan to do so for the next year to year and a half as suggested by my doctor. I have had no other outbreaks since the first one. My doctor explained to me that taking Valtrex on a regimen would help the virus become dormant. I was wondering what that meant specifically in terms of my likelihood of transmitting the virus to sexual partners with or without condoms.
Avatar f tn When I was in my early stages, I didn't believe I was pregnant. I had cramps just like my period, just a bit lighter. I ended up taking 5 tests and guilting my midwife into giving me an ultrasound because I didn't believe it!
