Valtrex herpes transmission

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex herpes transmission

valtrex

Avatar m tn Of course. All people with herpes, be it HSV1 or HSV2, are eligible to donate blood. Herpes is not a blood born virus.
Avatar f tn I take it to prevent transmission only. I know that Valtrex reduces transmission by half for people. Does anybody know if there is any research showing if long term Valtrex reduces viral shedding? Also, does anybody know of any research about how much people shed in asymptomatic cases. I read all the stats online, and the Valtrex stats are mainly for people with symptoms. Thanks for any help!!!
Avatar n tn Shedding could be present during prodromal symptoms of an HSV-2 outbreak. But itching isn't a known herpes prodrome. Valtrex causes no known long term health problems; people have taken it for 10+ years without problems. You can trust the herpes information provided by CDC (www.cdc.gov/std), the American Social Health Association (www.ashastd.org), or the Westover Heights Clinic of Portland, OR (the clinic owned and run by Terri Warren, who moderates the MedHelp herpes forum: www.
Avatar m tn Only one of the things that you list, Valtrex, has been shown to reduce transmission of herpes from one person to another. I worry about putting things on the labia that have unproven effects. For example, for a long time we believed that nonoxynol 9 could reduce the risk of herpes transmission, but it turned out it increased the risk! So if you were my patients, I would say that you stop putting things on your vagina except lubricants specifically made for sexual contact.
Avatar n tn I want to take anti-virals to reduce transmission risk, and I will practice safe sex with condom use. Do all anti-virals reduce transmission risk, or is Valtrex the only one as is claimed by the manufacturer? Do I risk damage to my kidneys if I take this drug at a 500 milligram dose daily for long term use and is it effective long term? (I understand the study was for eight months, so there is no information on long-term effect after a year on Valtrex. What about other anti-virals?
Avatar f tn lysine isn't effective for herpes. we don't recommend it. if you have a regular partner who you are trying to reduce the risk of transmission to, then take valtrex every single day. If you don't currently have a partner and aren't having any painful recurrences, no reason to take it at this time. make sense?
Avatar f tn If I have a genetal herpes and my partner doesn't, i do want to keep it that way. By taking valtrex it doesn't 100% prevent the transmission, so they say we have to use condoms, which we don't prefer. So, my Question is how effective the Valtrex is and do you have anything else to recommend to prevent transmission without using condoms. Thanks.
Avatar n tn She has herpes, we think (getting retested next week) but I do not. Is valtrex a viable solution? Are there other solutions? Thank you!
Avatar m tn the 500mg daily dose is the dose for 9 or less ob's a year. it's what the herpes and reduction in transmission study used for determining the reduction in transmission to partner. some providers do prefer the 1gm daily dose for the first 6 months to a year just because. No real research that shows that it reduces recurrences more for the majority of people nor any info that shows that it reduces transmission to a partner even more.
Avatar m tn ) 3) There is no discrepancy between the low transmission risk overall and the occasional person who catches herpes after a single exposure. That would be like saying that when someone gets struck by lightning, someone else's risk goes up. Rare things happen. The person who catches herpes after a single exposure, like the person hit by lightning, was just unlucky. Your risk of herpes seems far too low to warrant all these blood tests.
Avatar n tn valtrex is the only herpes antiviral you only take daily. If you want to lower transmission to a partner, you need to take it every single day, not just before you have sex. have you ever read the free herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com?
Avatar f tn So now that i found out that i have hsv-1 do i need to take valtrex everyday for the rest of my life if i dont want to get my partner infected?
Avatar n tn Your bf needs to find a provider who understands herpes and transmission better. he needs to let them know that he wants suppressive therapy to help reduce the transmission of hsv2 to his partner.
Avatar f tn most of us get more than enough lysine in our diets naturally. you are controlling your herpes with the valtrex, no need for supplements with lysine. this was really low risk. have you and your man talked about your herpes? has he been teted to know his own status?
Avatar n tn Know anything about the risk of transmission being higher if we had sex two days ago, and yes still taking valtrex and used condom for everythng other than heavy petting, but now I feel like I may be having symptoms? Some excessive urination feelings, tingle after peeing, and some vaginal redness?? No bumps or blisters have appeared yet, but am keeping a close eye on things. Are these even signs of a recurrent OB??
Avatar n tn As a whole though, Oral sex IS in fact a risk for herpes transmission. About 1/3 of all new HSV1 genital herpes cases are from oral sex. And more than 1/2 of all new cases amongst the college-aged crowd. I can vouch for it's transmission, as I have genital HSV1 from my partner who has oral HSV1.
Avatar f tn Valtrex reduces the risk of transmission of HSV 2 by half - should be just about as good for reducing the risk of transmitting HSV 1 as well. We do prescribe this for daily use with people who have frequently recurring cold sores and also for people who have HSV 1 who have partners who do not have HSV 1 (either oral or genital). You will shed some asymptomatically, but not a lot.
Avatar m tn Is that a 2% transmission risk with just the daily Valtrex or does that % reflect suppressive therapy coupled with condom usage?
