Valtrex generic availability

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex generic availability

valtrex

Avatar m tn from Europe, I cannot believe how expensive Valtrex is here in the U.S.! I just want to get confirmation that there is a Generic Valtrex that is NOT Acyclovir - it that correct? My online pharmacy is offering me Valcyclovir which is a lot cheaper than Valtrex but I just want to make sure it isn't Acyclovir before I purchase it. Thank you in advance for your help!
Avatar n tn Also as a fyi - valtrex will be going generic in december of this year. It should be going down in price then so if you find that taking medication 2x/day is too hard to remember - check back with your pharmacist next january to see if the price has come down a lot more for you or not with valtrex. If you've never read the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com - it's free and has all the medications and their doses listed there - bookmark it for easy reference!
Avatar n tn Today I got my boyfriend to pick up a new batch of pills as I was sick and he came home with a new generic brand of valtrex. This kind of mad me mad as I have no idea if they are the same or not and I thought i should have a choice to switch not just be switched over. My new bottle says CPL Pms-Valacyclovir 500mg instead of CPL valtrex valacyclovir HCI 500mg. The guy at the drug place told my boyfriend that it was suppose to be the same and that it was only $14.
Avatar n tn There is not a cheap generic version of valtrex available for purchase in the US.
Avatar f tn Look for generic entecavir.
Avatar m tn Well valtrex is generic now everywhere so it shouldn't be a money issue for most folks if they have decent prescription coverage with their insurance. Acyclovir is still way cheaper but if you have insurance coverage that makes generics low cost, valtrex is, as of this month, going to be WAY cheaper for you now :) the technicality to the answer to your question is this - only valtrex has been studied for reduction in transmission to a partner.
Avatar n tn Maybe they are gearing up to move everyone to generic Valtrex which I am sure will have a greater profit margin than acyclovir. I would hate to think that the drug companies are going to try to force people into a more expensive option but it wouldn't surprise me. I know there are people here that are more "plugged in" to this industry/topic than I am. Do you have any thoughts? I would be interested to know.
Avatar n tn I recently tested positive for HSV2. Doc put me on Generic Valtrex for supressive therapy. I took 500mg once a day for about a week. The sore from OB has never been so bad or lasted so long. 6 days ago I started 500mg twice a day and still no relief. Could I be immune to the Valtrex? How long should it take to get relief? Awaiting call back from Doc but holidays and all...
Avatar f tn I heard within the past few weeks valtrex is now generic. The generic form will still be quite expensive for the next few months until pharmacy's and insurances' can adopt it to their formularies. I dont think it would be an option for me for at least a year. I havent experienced any side effects whatsoever with acyclovir so its been great. No outbreaks either. The hardest part for me is managing my stress level and not letting myself get too run-down.
Avatar f tn Acyclovir is way cheaper than valtrex is. You might not be able to get generic valtrex at this point - it's in short supply currently. Ask your provider to change your prescription to acyclovir instead. Even without insurance you can get a course of it for episodic therapy for $4 at walmart and suppressive therapy for under $20 ( with a prescription from your provider of course ). You can have herpes lesions on the foot.
1713150 tn?1314467342 By the way, my suppressive therapy dose is 500 mg valtrex (the generic of valtrex) 2x daily. So... after the 1st and only outbreak I was taking 1,000 mg 2x daily.
1302779 tn?1287405029 i have generic valtrex but i also have chronic migraine and i feel the valtrex gives me a headache. do u get side effects from valtrex?
Avatar m tn Also I don't think you will find much better then valtrex. Valtrex does have a generic out. You may want to look into that.
Avatar m tn ll see an improvement on hsv vaccination it will be when, the license for valtrex runs out and a generic medication take over. other wise, at 7 dollars a pill the business is too big to spoiled it.
1134609 tn?1269272200 I have never had any luck when I have been placed on the generic brands of medications. Celexa especially; I was on it for 10 years, tried the generic several times and paid for it. 3. I have also been on Neurontin for the past 10 years. In a past post, I wondered if they decrease in dosage is what was causing me so many problems. However, I am back on the brand name of the medication and there's a HUGE difference between the two.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar f tn Since then I have had several breakouts, treated with Valtrex (generic) as Acyclovir was not helpful. In the past I have had strange reactions to medications and infections including skin peeling off of my hands and feet from antibiotics and or MRSA. Within the past 2 months I began taking 500MG Valtrex daily for prophylaxis. This is now the second time within the time span that the skin on my labia and inside my vagina has become very irritated and itchy, then peeled off.
Avatar f tn ve known that I had it for almost 2 years). My doctor prescribed me with generic Valtrex and to take 2 pills when I feel even a slight tingling or what I suspect to be an outbreak. I've had sex with a man 3 times since being diagnosed. All 3 times we used a condom before any penis to vagina contact was made AND I took a Valtrex pill before intercourse. 2 questions - What are his chances of catching genital herpes from me?
Avatar f tn It is March 2014 and I am again taking 1000mg 3x per day generic Valacyclovir for 7 days and the redness and spots on my chin are only somewhat better than they have been but they are still there and never completely went away. It seems that the generic Valacyclovir is not doing its full job and am wondering if Valtrex name brand should be my next option or if there might be something else going on?
