Avatar n tn Talk to your doctor about having a prescription for acyclovir or valtrex on hand so that if you start feeling an itch or tingling on your lips like a cold sore might be starting , you can take the cold sore dose ( 1 day ) to help ward it off or at least speed healing of it. Lots of info on cold sores on the valtrex website under the cold sore section for more reading.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have a better rem. For cold sores. Had one at around 8 weeks for 3-5 weeks. Can't get anything to work. Now at 20 weeks and its taking off again. Soc ordered abreva, tired most everything I use prior to pregnancy. Nada.
Avatar f tn Hello, i had a hsv 1 genital outbreak about a month ago, i have had this for six years and only one outbreak since the first time, my question is, do i really need to stay on the valtrex for surpresive therapy, or would it be smarter to stay on it to avoid giving it to someone else
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
Avatar m tn I have had oral cold sores so l would probably test positive for 1. I will get a blood test next month from my gp. Is there any difference in the way the 2 different types look when they first appear? Thank you for your time.
Avatar f tn I'm 44 and was just diagnosed. My husband of 2 years had a cold sore and we had oral sex. After I went to urgent care and they sent me to the er he told me 30 years ago he had a rash on his stomach. That's why he gets cold sores. He thinks it was dormant in me and I got it from my x. Idk!!!! What I do know is I can't imagine living with this pain for the rest of my life.
Avatar n tn Thank You for your help. She is on Valtrex to suppress cold sores. Md. said that she should be on it for 3 months or so. It has been successful so far. (one month ) Should we ask Md. to take her off Valtrex so she can fight the infection? We think that she had a cold sore and when it was open she contracted infection. She is first year student in college living there. We were very concerned about Staph. She has tested negative for it.
Avatar f tn I tested positive for oral HSV type 1 which I had anticipated due to my cold sores I have had recurrently since childhood. Honestly, not until recently did I actually believe that my "cold sores" were due to herpes, I always believed this was a myth. I woke up on Saturday the 22 of March with a cold sore on the corner of my lip and immediately applied the abreva cream I carry around. I used it for the first 2 days and then left it alone.
Avatar n tn Valtrex has been recognized to be useful in both Genital Herpes as well as Cold sores. However, it id not approved for suppression of Cold sores as you have asked. Therefore you may not take this drug in a such fashion. Cold sores are also known as Herpes Labialis and are caused by reactivation of latent Herpes viruses. Hope this helped. let me know if you may need any more information.
Avatar m tn ) I have herpes (HSV-1) since I was a child. I experience cold sores whenever my immune system weakens for some reasons (poor diet, stress, etc). The thing always appears around my lips, sometimes inside my nose (once it appeared near my eye). Unfortunately, this tends to happen at least once in two months, and it really pisses me off (excuse my bluntness). I have tried all meds I could find, but none seem to be able to prevent it well.
Avatar f tn I have never had cold sores in my life. I am 12 weeks pregnant with my first child...and cold sore. Someone I talked to at work said it was a symptom of pregnancy. What the heck?? Anyone know anything about this?
Avatar m tn i have found that cold sores go away quickly if you take lysine (you can find it in the vitamin section)
Avatar n tn However, ever since December 2009 I have been experiencing chronic outbreaks of cold sores. I sought medical attention this past February and was put on Valtrex. I noticed that the sores were getting more severe around the time of my period. Several doctors told me that going on a low hormone birth control (ortho tri cyclen lo) would be the solution. It has definitely decreased the severity of the sores during the time of my period.
Avatar n tn Doctor, I have asked a question on this form before on how herpes is spread since I had difficulties with cold sores when I was younger. This following question I asked to the general community and did realize it did not go to the experts like yourselves. This question was a while back but I was thinking you would have greater insight, since I had some impression you can spread herpes by scratching a cold sore and touching your genitals, hence my question as follows....
Avatar m tn Question for you... I MAY have contracted HSV 1 genitally. I had previously had blood tests done which showed that I have HSV 1, but not HSV 2 (I've had cold sores). As of a week ago, I woke up with very red patches on the inside of my foreskin. Went to the doctor, he swabbed it and it came back as negative for HSV 1. I took one day's worth of Valtrex and by the next morning, it looked as though the red patch was nearly gone. I stopped taking the Valtrex as of then.
Avatar n tn On my initial outbreak, i did not take any medicine to help healing. This time i opted for Valtrex for 5 days, twice a day as recommended. My situation is getting better. What i would like to know is since it has been quite some time since my first outbreak, and that recurrent outbreaks are usually said to occur in most cases, in the first year after the initial outbreak, am i to expect more regular outbreaks now, or will they still be quite spaced out?
Avatar f tn There are several very atypical aspects to all this. Recurrent shingles is very rare. Were all of your "few episodes" professionally diagnosed, and tested for the singles virus? Or for HSV? How about your cold sores -- also professionally diagnosed? Were those outbreaks in your mouth, on your lips, or where? Assuming you indeed have oral herpes, almost certainly it is HSV-1, since they began in childhood; and almost certainly your recurrent genital herpes is HSV-2.
Avatar f tn Most cold sores take at least a week to heal. If they are cold sores, you might consider suppressive therapy, like daily valtrex or acyclovir, to help prevent them. Talk to your doctor about it.
127596 tn?1210922622 Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly. Indeed I remembered that the empty bottle was for a seven-day dosage. But in all of the times that I've seen her, I never noticed a cold sore.
Avatar f tn When I got back home I saw my doctor who was like it could be Herpes and I started daily valtrex but there were no sores or anything for him to look at. About a month later I went to a new doctor after I moved to a new city because I felt like I was always having that tingling feeling as having red blotches show up. The new doctor said it didn't sound like herpes and I stopped taking valtrex.
1339808 tn?1276321180 Natural treatment for cold sores include lysine, an amino acid, and lemon balm, or melissa. You can find products for this at a good health food store.
Avatar n tn Also started using a lot more chapstick on unaffected parts of my lip to keep them unchapped. My doctor suggested we should stay on the Valtrex reigment for a few more weeks, and if that is ineffective, then we can switch to an alternative called Famvir? I've HIV/STD negative btw. I'm just frusturated. I have a potential new gf that I haven't been able to kiss for almost 2 months, and this thing refuses to go away.
Avatar n tn I am a 45 yr old active healthy woman except for severe recurrent cold sores only occurring inside mouth (gums, never lips). Confirmed HSV1. Saw derm, found to be immunocompetent. Awaiting another derm appt.Took acyclovir for a few years prophylactically as occurrences are 3-4 times per month. Went off meds (worry about long term effects) and just bore with it for a few years.
Avatar m tn At first I was getting cold sores about every 4 to 6 weeks. I then started taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily for suppression therapy. This seemed to reduce the frequency of my outbreaks to about once every 2 to 3 months. To save money, my insurance switched me to acyclovir (400 mg twice a day) with similar results as the Valtrex. Then starting about 3 months ago, I began to have outbreaks every two weeks even with the suppression therapy.
Avatar f tn The lesions that occure are most definitely cold sores- I have classic symptoms each and every time. For me, they are hormonally and stress induced. I have been getting them for about the last 6-7 years now. They weren't always this frequent, but they have been since right before I got pregnant with my first. I even have outbreaks at least 3-4 times during pregnancy. This sore on the top lip is mostly on the inner mucus membrane, but really *just* on the inside, bordering the outside.
Avatar f tn I am wondering if while I am on this it would also prevent an oral herpes outbreak? I am not sure if I even get cold sores, however I often do get sores on the hard palate of my mouth and I wonder if they could be herpes, since they usually occur in the same location. Thank you.
