valtrex

Avatar n tn Valtrex has been recognized to be useful in both Genital Herpes as well as Cold sores. However, it id not approved for suppression of Cold sores as you have asked. Therefore you may not take this drug in a such fashion. Cold sores are also known as Herpes Labialis and are caused by reactivation of latent Herpes viruses. Hope this helped. let me know if you may need any more information.
Avatar f tn My 29 year old daughter had a severe and frightening reaction to Valtrex. She had cold sores and began taking 500 mg Valtrex, per script. She took one in the am and one in the pm for five days, and as adverse effects appeared, she cut back to one in the pm for four more days. She progressively became psychotic, experiencing altered states of consciousness, panic attacks, uncontrollable crying, tremors, and extreme fear. Blurred vision and the inability to focus were also taking place.
Avatar n tn I recently began a relationship with a man. I am a woman. He gets cold sores. We have not had intercourse yet. My NP recommended 400 mg a day of acylovir to reduce shedding. I asked her if it was supposed to be twice a day and she said no. My questions are these: 1. Is once a day acyclovir okay given I never have outbreaks? 2. How safe is oral sex? What are the chances of giving him oral HSV 2. What are the chances of giving him genital HSV 1, keeping in mind I never have outbreaks of either.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have a better rem. For cold sores. Had one at around 8 weeks for 3-5 weeks. Can't get anything to work. Now at 20 weeks and its taking off again. Soc ordered abreva, tired most everything I use prior to pregnancy. Nada.
Avatar f tn I do not think there are many side effects for the vast majority of people that take Valtrex.
Avatar f tn My doctor told me to stop taking Valtrex for a while to let my liver regenerate. While I think Valtrex is an excellent drug for treating HSV 2, I think users should take into consideration that long term use can cause some mild to moderate damage to the liver as my tests have proven. Also, anyone using Valtrex should not drink ANY alcohol while on it because it will exacerbate the problem with your liver. I'm hoping in a few weeks my liver tests go back to normal.
127596 tn?1210922622 Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly. Indeed I remembered that the empty bottle was for a seven-day dosage. But in all of the times that I've seen her, I never noticed a cold sore.
Avatar m tn When you were sick, did you test for covid? Did you recently get a covid vaccine? We've had reports from people that having covid and/or getting the vax can trigger herpes sores, and it can be really hard to get them under control. Are you taking the Valtrex daily, as suppression? That would be my suggestion after you see the doc and get it confirmed that these are indeed hsv1 outbreaks.
Avatar f tn I have never had cold sores in my life. I am 12 weeks pregnant with my first child...and cold sore. Someone I talked to at work said it was a symptom of pregnancy. What the heck?? Anyone know anything about this?
Avatar m tn i have found that cold sores go away quickly if you take lysine (you can find it in the vitamin section)
Avatar n tn And I definitely think that antiviral therapy would be very useful for you to have fewer recurrences. You should take the medicine daily, and side effects are unusual and are similar to those taking placebo medicines. The most common side effects are headache and nausea, and that occurs in less than 5% of people taking antiviral therapy. I get cold sores, and take daily Valtrex to prevent cold sores (don't want to be on the road lecturing about herpes with a big cold sore on my lip!
Avatar n tn On-and-off for about 10 years, I get a burning sensation on my face (right side only). It feels like a bad sunburn first, then pain. The pain goes to my nose, ear and gums to where my teeth start to feel loose. It is always on the right side. After 3 days of this I end up with a cold sore. I told my Doctor after a few episodes, not sure what was going on. She told me, “Well, at least you know when you are getting a cold sore.” Well, not really the answer I wanted, but I went with it.
Avatar n tn However, ever since December 2009 I have been experiencing chronic outbreaks of cold sores. I sought medical attention this past February and was put on Valtrex. I noticed that the sores were getting more severe around the time of my period. Several doctors told me that going on a low hormone birth control (ortho tri cyclen lo) would be the solution. It has definitely decreased the severity of the sores during the time of my period.
Avatar m tn no, chicken pox is herpes zoster. cold sores are herpes simplex. 2 totally different viruses.
Avatar n tn I immediately went on Valtrex. For the first 10 days 2mg then 1 mg a day for suppression. Long story short, it is 6 months later, I have never had another outbreak. I feel prefectly normal. My question is: Should I continue to take 1 mg of Valtrex? My understanding is that based on my Genitial HSV-1 diagnosis, I should never have another outbreak (or at least very few) and that I am at an extremely low risk of spreading the virus through shedding.
Avatar f tn Is there any other treatment for recurrent herpes besides acyclovir and valtrex? I have never taken valtrex but have read that they are the same thing. I feel so bloated, tired and dizzy while on acyclovir. My dr said we could try valtrex...but if it's the same, what's the point? Any other people with similar side effects that found solutions?
Avatar f tn Help :( For the last year and a half, I've noticed a tremendous increase in my cold sores. Since I had my first one ten years ago, I would get them twice a year like clockwork - one in the hottest month of the summer and one in the coldest month of winter. Now I'm getting them almost monthly. I take Valtrex episodically, but I'm flying through my supply of twelve refills. They've always been in the *exact* same spot, but they're not being faithful to their old locale either.
Avatar f tn I don`t want to take Valtrex 1 g twice a day for rest of my life! That is so many side effects of this drug.I need help. I take valtrex 1 g twice daily for 5 days total now , I plan to do it for another 5 days and stop. I don`t know what will happen. Please respond to my question. Is it herpes ?
Avatar n tn Also started using a lot more chapstick on unaffected parts of my lip to keep them unchapped. My doctor suggested we should stay on the Valtrex reigment for a few more weeks, and if that is ineffective, then we can switch to an alternative called Famvir? I've HIV/STD negative btw. I'm just frusturated. I have a potential new gf that I haven't been able to kiss for almost 2 months, and this thing refuses to go away.
Avatar m tn At first I was getting cold sores about every 4 to 6 weeks. I then started taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily for suppression therapy. This seemed to reduce the frequency of my outbreaks to about once every 2 to 3 months. To save money, my insurance switched me to acyclovir (400 mg twice a day) with similar results as the Valtrex. Then starting about 3 months ago, I began to have outbreaks every two weeks even with the suppression therapy.
Avatar n tn I have been prone to cold sores for many years, had one recently in November 2010. I have had a cold for approximately 2 weeks with no cold sore. I am a contact wearer and recently went to the eye doctor due to pain and redness in my eye. The doctor told me I had a corneal ulcer. I am curious if taking my prescription for Valtrex would have any impact on my eye?
Avatar f tn i want to take two doses of valtrex becuase my cold sores are very painful and almost on the tonsil, they also last for two and a half weeks. i really do not want to deal with that ontop of my tonsil issues, but if valtrex would interfear with them the augmentin, i will wait. on a side note, i go to boarding school, neither of my two roomates or any one else at school has caught anything from me so far.
Avatar f tn I am wondering if while I am on this it would also prevent an oral herpes outbreak? I am not sure if I even get cold sores, however I often do get sores on the hard palate of my mouth and I wonder if they could be herpes, since they usually occur in the same location. Thank you.
