Valtrex dosage oral herpes

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosage oral herpes

valtrex

Avatar n tn I unfortunately have oral and genital herpes (I've only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
55646 tn?1263660809 First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar m tn Valtrex is the dominant brand name, valacylcovir the generic name. Do not take both; it would be an overdose. (Probably not harmful, but not recommended.) You get maximum effectiveness against oral herpes with the 2 g (2000 mg) dose taken twice a day apart; higher, more frequent, or more prolonged treatment will make no difference. 2) You are typical in not having an identifed trigger of your outbreaks. Most people cannot pinpoint particular events.
Avatar m tn Is there any place where I can get comprehensive information on oral hsv2? I had unprotected oral sex 3 days ago. I have developed 2 canker sores on the front bottom lip (inside the mouth). I've infrequently had canker sores before, but never anything like this. I previously tested negative for both HSV1 and HSV2 before this incident. Also, any thoughts on symptoms of developing the two canker sores?
Avatar m tn I have been dating a woman for over a year who has has a recurring herpes lesion that occurs in the area of her upper buttocks. That is the only place where it is occurs. She has tested positive for HSV-2. Before whe was diagnosed, I had unprotected vaginal sex with her during a time when the lesion (which she and I thought at the time was a pimple) was present. After her diagnosis, she began to take Valtrex but still has recurring outbreaks of the lesion.
Avatar n tn Hi, with valtrex for first time outbreaks the recommended dosage is 1000mg twice a day for ten days.
127596 tn?1210922622 She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly. Indeed I remembered that the empty bottle was for a seven-day dosage. But in all of the times that I've seen her, I never noticed a cold sore. Of course, she didn't have any sores anywhere else on her body either.
Avatar n tn pick a different dermatologist who doesn't get hung up on knowing you have oral herpes and so therefore doesn't do a proper work up on you. This isn't likely to be your herpes all going on at this point. Honestly I'd stop the antivirals and make them start doing lesion cultures to see if herpes even shows up at this point to help convince them that it's not just herpes.
Avatar n tn 3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....
Avatar m tn I was swabbed and all tests came back negative however I did test positive for hsv 1 via blood work- my question is if this were an oral herpes outbreak genitally would being on valtrex every day for 4 months have made these symptoms subside ??? Is the pain people talk about with a herpes outbreak the actual open sores that are painful or is it a generalized pain ? The pain I am experiencing is like someone has the tip of my penis in a vice...
Avatar f tn s I was getting outbreaks twice in a month or every month so I was prescribed 1gm of valtrex daily dosage. which would help for the most part and brought my outbreaks down to none or once a year again. but recently I have been getting outbreaks once a month it started out as fever blisters every month now this month I have a cold sore. I am at my wit's end and did everything to prevent an outbreak. I took two valtrex, three lysine and applied abreva.
Avatar f tn I know that there is a small, but real chance that I could transmit HSV-1 to him, but what are the chances that I could contract genital (or oral) HSV-2 from him? If he took a daily dosage of medication such as Valtrex, would that suppress the shedding of his virus and decrease my chances of contracting it? I've read conflicting research articles about this, but am curious as to what the Herpes community out there has to say...I'd be very interested!
Avatar n tn I have a girlfriend who has had oral herpes for 15 years. She had an outbreak, and took Valtrex and we waited a week until the sores had healed. Then she skipped one day with the Valtrex, and the next day we had unprotected oral sex. Immediately afterward, she noticed a sore directly on her lip. This has made us both quite nervous. This second outbreak was unusual because in all the time she has had it, she has never had a "second outbreak".
Avatar m tn Usually IgM results are presented as a numeric value, I see that yours is not. Again, continuous symptoms are not usually indicative of herpes. I'm not clear how the Valtrex is helping if you don't have herpes, though. It does seem to me that if you had herpes, at some point you would have lesions. A small dose? I'm not sure how you are defining that, but suppressive therapy, medicine taken every day, can definitely postpone antibody development.
Avatar f tn I have never had an oral cold sore or been tested positive for HSV1 or 2. About 6 months ago I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend who later told me that she just got off antibiotics recently for a yeast infection but she was 100% sure she didn't have any STDs and the infection was already gone.
Avatar m tn I recently had by second OB mid-June (about two weeks ago). This OB was much more mild, with just a few bumps. I took a 3 day dosage of valtrex, and it cleared up. However, only about a week after, I started my third OB which I am currently going through. This one has no actual sores or visible effects, but there is itching, burning, and a lot of tingling. Here are my questions: 1. Is it normal to have this many OBs with HSV-1?
Avatar f tn After months and months of dry lips and mouth sores and many questions, I finally got to see a doctor who prescribed diflucan for yeast and Valtrex. The dosage is 2 pills twice a day for one day. Everyone on meds seems to be taking them for much longer as far as I've read online. Has anyone else received a similar dosage? I felt what I imagine was a prodome on my lip yesterday and I also had the tiny pimples that have been present for months in the inner side of my lip & same corner.
Avatar f tn Have you been diagnosed with oral herpes? Have you had oral herpes previously, or only since this relationship began? Have you seen a health professional, and has oral herpes been professionally diagnosed or confirmed by a lab test? Have you been tested for HSV-1 and/or HSV-2? Since you have had no oral contact with your partner's genital area, if your apparent "first outbreak" indeed is herpes, most likley you have had it for a long time, i.e. not from this partner.
Avatar m tn Did your doctor swab/culture the area? It's the only way for certain to know it's herpes going on. Actually most oral herpes occurs on the lips/mouth. Here's a good resource for oral herpes, that grace also recommends. As you can see in the symptoms part, there is no mention of swollen/painful gums. Again, only a swab/culture of symptoms can diagnose. How were you tested? http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.
Avatar f tn It's not likely to be herpes without any sores, but stop taking the Valtrex and see what happens. Herpes typically doesn't go from the genitals to the mouth as easily as it does from the mouth to the genitals. When you say you took Valtrex before you had sex, do you mean you take it daily? In order for Valtrex to work to reduce transmission, you have to take it daily for at least 5 days prior to having sex.
Avatar m tn Also, while not 100% protected, a long-standing oral HSV1 infection plus Valtrex should be a plus to preventing a new GHSV1 infection. I tried finding info on someone contracting GHSV2 from oral sex, but I can find nothing reliable, so my fingers are crossed.......
Avatar m tn As far back as my early teen years I'd get an occasional cold sore on my lip. No worries I'd just get the cream and it would go away. Now I'm 40 and two weeks ago had lower back surgery. I had a small fever blister but forgot about it. Two weeks go by and I noticed all these ulcers in my mouth along my cheek and back of the throat. I panicked and went to see the doc. He said it was the type 2 herpes but only gave me 2 valtrex pills at 1gm each. What's going on?
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
