What is the maximum suppression dosage for Valtrex? One doctor told me it was 1 gram daily, but my current doctor prescribed 2 per day and said that was ok to take as long as needed. He said in an immune-compromised patient, it could be 3 grams per day as needed, but no longer-term studies have been done about it to determine the upper-limit of the max safe long-term dose. Is this the consensus opinion?
I was recently diagnosed with HSV-2. My first outbreak was bad but in comparison to most, not so terrible. It's been two months since my initial outbreak and I have a feeling that I'm about to experience another. I have a sensative area in my vagina and it's tender to the touch. This is different than my initial but have read that the symptoms may differ in response to medicine.
I was recently prescribed Valtrex/acyclovir for a possible hsv 2 genital outbreak (1 gram every twelve hrs). The results were negative, but I was advised to continue taking the meds until they were gone. I previously was exposed to hsv1 which I rarely have symptoms aside from the occasional fever blister. Shortly after starting the meds i noticed that I had signs of an oral outbreak. I've asked and dr say that the medicine didnt cause it.

What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day?
My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Could Valtrex cause a false negative IGG blood test in an old infection? I have heard it can delay the production of antibodies in a NEW infection, but I was visually diagnosed with herpes 4 years ago.
The IGG test was done 4 years after the visual diagnosis, while I was on Valtrex 1 gram daily for the first time ever, and had been on it for about 3 weeks straight before the test.
Just wondering if there is a need to retest, or should I accept the negative results? Thanks!
When my provider realized that the dosage was not high enough to control these frequent outbreaks the dosage was increased to 1 gram daily for supp therapy and 2 grams daily for 5 days when having an outbreak. Even on such a high dosage of medicine I continue to have frequent outbreaks/symptoms (i.e. outbreaks with sores once every 1-2 weeks and the symptoms...tingling and itching-EVERYDAY since my dx)!!

it is confusing to know what a reoccurance is - as its only sore in one spot.
i was hoping since it is HSV1 I wouldnt have any other outbreaks. This has certainly been depressing, just when i thought everything was healed!

Now being on the pill I am scared to have anything with nuts in it and its driving me crazy worrying about what I eat. Will being on the pill stop these triggers?? I am on Valtrax 1 gram a day. Thanks.
the problem is, his symptoms keep disappearring and reoccurring, despite taking a very high amount of Valtrex (1-2 grams twice daily while having symptoms) and even a maintenance dose in between (1 gram daily). This last time, he had prostatitis in addition, which I read can also be a secondary infection with Herpes. He saw his urologist for that and was put on antibiotics which seemed to work. he hasn't been officially diagnosed yet for HSV2 because he never had sores present.
I usually treat it with Valtrex, 2 gram in morning, 2 gram at night when I feel an outbreak coming on. I get around one outbreak every 4-6 weeks. A lot, I know.
I recently started seeing someone who is HSV1 negative and would like to have unprotected oral sex. Given the fact that it sheds around 15% per week (in addition to my own frequent outbreaks) do you think it might be a good idea to treat it daily, at least for the next couple of months? Or is that ovedkill?
How likely to transmit it is it with those numbers? One last thing my doctor is suggesting I switch from 1 gram of Valtrex per day to 500mg per day. Will making a sudden change cause me to have outbreaks or be more likely to transmit it to my partner. Isn't 1 gram a better safeguard? Also if I did get HSV2 12 years ago and that is my number how likely is it that I can transmit this to my partner while on Valtrex?
I have been taking Valtrex regularly for 2 months and I have been taking 1 gram of Valtrex steadily for 2 weeks, and it is not going away. Valtrex has always worked quickly when I have had outbreaks in the past. The symptoms of this lesion (itchiness or soreness) come and go. What could be causing this? Could it be something other than herpes? Could the Valtrex be harmful to my baby? I go to the doctor again, soon, but want to be armed with all the inform. I can.
Hi! So, I KNOW I have hsv2 genital via swab. I just hit my 6 month mark and had a full std panel done including an IGG specific herpes test. It came back negative for the antibodies. (both hsv1&2). What does this mean for me? The doctor said we'll redo the test in a few months; however, as she told me - I could be in the 5% who never get the antibodies! Would that mean constant outbreaks? I'm really nervous...
That's what my Dr gave me and I'm sure it's valtrex. It's valacyclovir hcl 1 gram tablet. I went to get a second opinion at an std clinic and they confirmed I have herpes type 2. I plan on going back to the std clinic next Wednesday so I can ask more questions b/c my primary Dr seems to not be on her A game when it comes to this situation.
