Valtrex dosage genital herpes

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosage genital herpes

valtrex

Avatar m tn I recently had by second OB mid-June (about two weeks ago). This OB was much more mild, with just a few bumps. I took a 3 day dosage of valtrex, and it cleared up. However, only about a week after, I started my third OB which I am currently going through. This one has no actual sores or visible effects, but there is itching, burning, and a lot of tingling. Here are my questions: 1. Is it normal to have this many OBs with HSV-1?
Avatar n tn I unfortunately have oral and genital herpes (I've only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Avatar f tn Just been diagnosed with genital herpes 2. Have had five recurrences in 3½ months. Valtrex 500 mg didn´t help so now I take 500 mg x 2. What about my future? Is this how it will be? Constant pain and no sex? I need hope. I have none.
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about the advantages of switching. Valtrex is also approved to to reduce transmission of genital herpes from an infected person to an uninfected one.
Avatar f tn What you need to do is have a sore swabbed within 48 hours to confirm if the genital sores are herpes. If you only took them in the beginning and stopped and have not had any outbreaks for like 8 months, you dont need to be on them unless your sexually active. But we really dont know if you have genital herpes. Tell us about the sores.
Avatar m tn Genital HSV-1 sheds less than Genital HSV-2. Genital HSV-1 sheds about 3-5% of days a year. Oral HSV-1 sheds more. When talking about transmission some people go years before having transmission to their partner. For example we had a regular poster here who said it took 5 years of a very active oral sex life for her BF to transmit his oral herpes to her genitals. 2. For most STD's yes. When it comes to herpes it only reduces risk about 30%.
Avatar n tn First, it is crucial that you know for sure whether your genital herpes indeed is due to HSV-2. What is the basis for your herpes being HSV-2 and not HSV-1? Second, your fiance needs a blood test for antibody to both HSV-1 and 2, which will tell whether she might already be infected with the same virus type that you have. If so, she is immune and can't catch it again. (Infected partners do not "ping pong" the virus back and forth.
Avatar f tn HELLO, I TESTED POSITIVE FOR GENITAL HSV 1 ABOUT 2 1/2 MONTHS AGO AND EVER SINCE THEN MY ENTIRE GENITAL AREA HAS BEEN SO PAINFUL. I AM TAKING VALTREX 500 MG 2 TIMES A DAY AND A LARGE AMOUNT (UP TO 6000 MG) OF L-LYSINE DAILY AND MY SYMPTOMS DON'T SEEM TO BE IMPROVING. I HAVE NEVER HAD VISIBLE LESIONS BUT MY PCR SWAB WAS POSITIVE FOR HSV 1 IN MY VAGINAL CANAL. WILL THEY SYMPTOMS EVER GO AWAY OR SHOULD I EXPECT TO CONSTANTLY BE IN PAIN. PLEASE HELP, DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO?
Avatar f tn I know that there is a small, but real chance that I could transmit HSV-1 to him, but what are the chances that I could contract genital (or oral) HSV-2 from him? If he took a daily dosage of medication such as Valtrex, would that suppress the shedding of his virus and decrease my chances of contracting it? I've read conflicting research articles about this, but am curious as to what the Herpes community out there has to say...I'd be very interested!
Avatar f tn I have had genital herpes for several years over 10. I get maybe about 1-3 outbreaks per year. I don't always take suppressive therapy, but recently I started then stopped, then I had a mild outbreak the week before last. I took one Acyclovir pill that day then twice a day for about 3-4 days, not sure of the dosage, but the outbreak seemed to be going away, then today I felt the pain again. The outbreak is still there but much smaller.
Avatar f tn I am almost 39 weeks pregnant and have a longstanding genital herpes infection (almost 20 years). Last Wednesday I started feeling mild prodome symptoms just near my vagina but never developed a lesion (tingling and mild shooting pains on thigh, mild headache and fatigue but NO swollen glands). This is in spite of suppression therapy I've taken since week 36. My OB is aware of the issue.
Avatar n tn 3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with genital herpes a year ago, I never had an out break till now. Which I didn't even know I was having one till I went to the doctor. He put me on Valtrex but I'm afraid to take it because I don't want too kill my own.immune system and get out breaks more often. My out break is very mild. What should do?
Avatar n tn Welcome to the Forum. The only way to know for sure if you have genital herpes or not is with a swab or PCR test taken from a lesion. Blood tests are often not useful for this purpose and unfortunately, doctors are wrong about 20-25% of the time when they call a sore herpes. On the other hand, the lesions you describe at the base of your penis certainly do sound like herpes. Personally, I think you would be better off with a definitive diagnosis.
Avatar n tn The culture came back positive for herpes 1,the cold sore kind. But the blood test said negative, Is this weird? My dermatologist said It's not genital herpes, it's cold sore herpes (not recurring). She gave me two valtrex a day. This sound right?
Avatar n tn I didn't question whether you had herpes or not - I believe a positive culture from a lesion is definitive and if you look back at my response, I think that will be clearer. I'm questioning whether all of your symptoms now are herpes - just because you have genital herpes doesn't mean that everything that happens in the genital area are due to the herpes infection.
Avatar n tn I encourage you to pick one gyn and start going there monthly when you have symptoms until you find out what is going on. Get tested for yeast and bacterial infections each time you go and also ask for your next symptoms to be cultured again for herpes regardless of the blood test results. Just because you know you have genital herpes, doesn't mean that everything that goes on is due to herpes. You can start on suppressive therapy if you want to take the herpes part out of it.
Avatar m tn What is the maximum suppression dosage for Valtrex? One doctor told me it was 1 gram daily, but my current doctor prescribed 2 per day and said that was ok to take as long as needed. He said in an immune-compromised patient, it could be 3 grams per day as needed, but no longer-term studies have been done about it to determine the upper-limit of the max safe long-term dose. Is this the consensus opinion?
