Avatar f tn Hi Grace does not pop in often but i will try to help. The recommended dosage for valtrex per terry warren is below: 1. first time outbreaks 1000 mg twice a day for ten days. 2. recurrent outbreaks is 2 grams, twice in one day, 12 hours apart or 500 mg twice a day for 3 days. 3. suppression is 1000 mg once a day for people wheo have 10 or more outbreaks per year. 500 mg once a day for people who have 9 or fewer per year. Doses are taken every day.
Avatar n tn However, I did as the docotr ordered and took Valtrex 3 times a day for a week. The sore went away within a couple of days. Just over a month later I had the same outbreak on my upper arm, went to a different doctor and he said it was a cold sore. He prescribed Valtrex twice a day for one day, which I did but then noticed another breakout just above the one present, so I upped the dosage of the Valtrex and it went away.
Avatar n tn It does sound like shingles, though you are correct, not a common site for shingles but not unheard of by any means. The way the distinction would be made is through a swab test (preferrably PCR) that would look for varicella Zoster and herpes simplex virus. Only that test is going to be able to distinguish between the two for you. My guess is zoster, but if you are concerned, this swab test can be performed.
Avatar n tn How were you diagnosed as having shingles? Shingles very rarely reoccurs. I'd be questioning the diagnosis of shingles at this point if I were you.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Shingles on Monday. Although i had only one small red spot, I experienced three days of extremely intense back and uterine pain prior to my doctor visit. On Tuesday, a rash, wrapping around my middrift ,appeared. The pain intensified to the point of no return. (I suffered nerve damage from a botched angiogram in July/09, so I know pain well.) My question is: Would the Valtrex (antiviral) be ineffective because it was administered after the intense pain had begun?
Avatar f tn Testing for shingles will not help me as I will have the antibodies for shingles as the antibodies for shingles and chicken pox are the same, and I have had chicken pox twice now so have the antibodies for life.
Avatar n tn For 6 years they could not get it under control. Finally, We tried Valtrex. I have shingles in my left eye. Iritis also. I use predforte whenever the eye acts up. But I will take Valtrex for the rest of my life.
Avatar m tn m getting ready for an OB. Have taken 1G Valtrex twice a day for a week and all I got was a tremendous headache. No relief from the constant nerve pain in my leg or rear so apparently Valtrex doesn't work for me.
233552 tn?1228319699 You can take valtrex while pregnant for shingles. It's safety during pregnancy has been pretty well established at this point plus we have 25+ years of acyclovir too to go on ( valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug ). The concern is if you don't treat this promptly you have a higher risk of having phn ( post herpetic neuralgia ) which would make you quite miserable for the rest of your pregnancy if not longer.
Avatar n tn Was prescribed Valtrex for about 10 days. All this was taken cared of any shingles eliminated. My question is, would I be a good candidate to have the new vaccine for SHINGLES to prevent it happening again???? I am 74 year old female. Also, doctor, for the past month or so I have been feeling a slight pain on my right side below my rib cage. This pain is not too severe, but it is just an uncomfortable feeling. I have had bouts with I.B.S. causiing loose stools and diarrhea.
Avatar n tn I thought I was having shingles over and over for years. I even had a couple of doctors who told me it was shingles. It was on my lower back. Then my hep doctor sent me to a dermatologist and she said it was genital herpes. The valtrex worked great for it.
Avatar m tn He perscribed Valtrex and Clomitrizole Topical Ointment. He also drew blood for an IGM test to see there is an active infection however he did not swab the blisters/bumps. Doctor C) A dermatologist I called that had a cancellation, this was today. He looked at it, doesn't think it's Shingles and told me to STOP taking the topical ointment but keep taking the Valtrex.
Avatar f tn I realize I have another thread but I would like to know if valtrex or any other med would fix this. To rehash my situation I have tested positive for hsv1 via blood test score was 30. I have had a burn tip of penis for 10 weeks since the incident. I don't need to hear that this is not a symptom of herpes or its anxiety related. All I want to know is would herpes meds cure burn in tip of penis regardless of length of time with no blisters?
Avatar f tn My blood draw returned with a negative result for HSV 1 and HSV 2. They did a redraw which was also negative. However, valtrex did help alleviate my symptoms. He said sometimes the tests are wrong and I began a new treatment of 2g valtrex (1g twice a day) at the 1st sign of an upcoming outbreak and then (500mg) twice a day for 5 days.
Avatar f tn You should've gone back to the ER. I've actually had Shingles without rash at all. I also had it the first time with just the smallest start of a burning rash. The doctor took one look at it and I was told that it was a good thing I noticed this in the shower like I did. He told me that if I had waited just one day, the rash would've been more than just that isolated patch I found as soon as the water hit me. I was put on antiviral and antibiotics, which is the usual protocol.
Avatar m tn I recently went to a clinic for lesions and pain while urinating and they did a culture. It came back positive for herpes, but they didn't test whether it was HSV-1 or HSV-2. They put me on Valtrex which I've been taking for nine days, and yesterday I was symptom free when I went to bed. I was awoken around midnight with an intense outbreak of what I I'm fairly sure is shingles, which I have had only one time before and that was years ago.
Avatar f tn There are other medications out there to manage your shingles - have you tried valtrex or acyclovir? There are medications for nerve pain. I think you should speak to your doctor about a plan to get off if you feel you can, there are meds that will help. For me personally, I've lived with chronic pain for years and the fear of how I would feel without the pills was worse than what I am actually experiencing.
Avatar f tn Diagnosed with shingles Wednesday night - went to doctor same day symptoms started as they were significant. Started Valtrex. Have bumps on lower back near sciatic nerve on left side and on left thigh following nerve line. Entire thigh dull to touch but high pain (throbbing, etc). Pain on site at back. Also high pain, burning on left hip, stomach, behind knee. Friday morning noticed third patch of bumps on thigh (more inward) and an increase of bumps on first set of thigh bumps.
Avatar n tn ve only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Avatar m tn give your provider a call and ask them to call in the acyclovir instead. You take it more often but it works just as well. The cheaper generic price is far worth the pain of taking it more often. acyclovir is way cheaper than valtrex. did you have a recurrence of shingles that you are on medications again? if so, did they confirm that it's shingles with testing or were these just visual diagnosis of shingles?
Avatar f tn ve never had shingles before now. I went to the doctor today and got neurontin and valtrex, but the doctor told me to keep taking the Concerta. I don't know what to do because the Concerta is helping my ADD, but I also believe it at least played a part in my shingles outbreak.
