valtrex dosage for prevention

After thinking about it around 12 hours later I realized I was at risk for infection. I took 1500 MG of Valtrex and will continue with 1000MG twice a day for a few more days. It makes some sense that the Valtrex could interfere with the HSV1 virus spreading from the initial infection sight to the nerves if you have Valtrex in your system prior to of soon after an initial exposure. Does anyone have any insight?

I am trying to figure out how to minimize outbreaks (I seem to get one after every infusion) I am currently on generic valtrex which I had only been taking for outbreaks. I looked up the standard dosing for prevention of outbreaks but that doesnt seem to keep them at bay either. I cant stop getting th remicade so are there any suggestions as to what I can do?

What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?

I am having a really bad cold sore outbreak (getting one right after the other), so I finally asked my doctor for Valtrex. He prescribed 1000 mg a day for 7 days to clear it all up. I am looking online though, and it looks like the normal dosage is 2000 mg a day, twice a day, for one day. I am confused, and the doctor's office will be closed until Monday. My Dr. wrote a prescription for 1gm daily pill of Valtrex. I already have stomach problems and am trying to minimize potential side effects with highest drug efficacy. Seems logical to take 2 pills at 500mg/pill instead. Would this reduce stomach upset and/or improve absorption of drug? Thx in advance.

What is the maximum suppression dosage for Valtrex? One doctor told me it was 1 gram daily, but my current doctor prescribed 2 per day and said that was ok to take as long as needed. He said in an immune-compromised patient, it could be 3 grams per day as needed, but no longer-term studies have been done about it to determine the upper-limit of the max safe long-term dose. Is this the consensus opinion?

You do not need to take the valtrex daily. I cannot take it daily because it causes kidney issues, but my doc suggested the following. I take one when I first feel the tingle, before you see anything, and another every 12 hours for 2 days, or till its gone. As long as I start the med before it erupts I can stop them Since I began doing that I have not had any come up, and the frequency of me taking the med has decreased signifigantly.

I have been taking different doses of Acyclovir over the past 2 months to get control of the virus and it gets better but does not go away completely. Should I switch meds? Would it be harmful to just increase the dosage of Acyclovir for a longer period as it's recommended for just 10 days.

t need 1,000 mg of Valtrex unless you are taking it around some kind of outbreak and then you follow a short dosage schedule specifically for the outbreak. For suppression to protect your partner, all you need is 500 mg a day.

Furthermore, I completed a year worth of daily suppressive therapy using the same dosage and while doing this faithfully for one year i had 6 outbreaks occur. I started to think that there was something else going on so my GYN tested me for HSV1 & HSV 2 in 2010 (via blood test). I tested positive for HSV2 (i dont have my igG numbers w/me as im typing, but this is what she called me to inform me of).

hello, I contracted HSV1 about 5 months ago. I've been on suppressive therapy with Valtrex since then because I believe (but don't know for sure) that my current partner is HSV1 negative. From time to time I try stopping the Valtrex for a few days and the virus seems to come back in the form of swollen, painful gums (it's not terrible pain but annoying, especially when brushing or flossing).
