Valtrex dosage for cold sore outbreaks

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex dosage for cold sore outbreaks

valtrex

Avatar f tn s I was getting outbreaks twice in a month or every month so I was prescribed 1gm of valtrex daily dosage. which would help for the most part and brought my outbreaks down to none or once a year again. but recently I have been getting outbreaks once a month it started out as fever blisters every month now this month I have a cold sore. I am at my wit's end and did everything to prevent an outbreak. I took two valtrex, three lysine and applied abreva.
Avatar m tn 1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug? 2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
Avatar n tn However, ever since December 2009 I have been experiencing chronic outbreaks of cold sores. I sought medical attention this past February and was put on Valtrex. I noticed that the sores were getting more severe around the time of my period. Several doctors told me that going on a low hormone birth control (ortho tri cyclen lo) would be the solution. It has definitely decreased the severity of the sores during the time of my period.
Avatar m tn When you were sick, did you test for covid? Did you recently get a covid vaccine? We've had reports from people that having covid and/or getting the vax can trigger herpes sores, and it can be really hard to get them under control. Are you taking the Valtrex daily, as suppression? That would be my suggestion after you see the doc and get it confirmed that these are indeed hsv1 outbreaks.
Avatar m tn Finally, in your experience does any of the antivirals work better than the others and are the dosages the same for genital HSV as for oral (I ask because the dosage my PCP prescribed was based the dosage for genital HSV?) Thank yoy again.
Avatar f tn Call your provider and ask them to phone in a prescription for the cold sore doses of one of the herpes antivirals. Famvir and valtrex both have 1 day cold sore doses.
Avatar f tn m definitely going to see if I can get the Valtrex for the time I feel the cold sore and not the daily suppresive treatement unless anything changes. Lets hope not! This virus doesn't travel in blood correct? And last you mention PCR while talking about viral shedding and I might be missing something but I'm not exactly sure what PCR stands for. Sorry! Thank you so much again!
Avatar n tn Hello, I am a female trying to figure out if I have HSV-1 genitally and may be having continuous outbreaks. A few months ago, my partner kissed me for a long time then performed oral sex on me. The next day, I realized that I had a cold sore inside my nose. I had my first cold sore seven years ago on the underside of my nose and have had less than one per year since then inside my nose. Valtrex has worked to suppress them if I take it in time.
Avatar m tn ve begun the Valtrex suppressant therapy 500mg per day I seem to be constantly tingling in my vaginal area, and it appears that I have a cold sore outbreak but inside the underside of my upper lip. I have never had that before :(. Could the stress of the diagnosis or start of the Valtrex have caused this? I thought the Valtrex was supposed to help alleviate outbreaks? (I just received positive results for HSV1 and 2 last month.
Avatar f tn They are amazing. I have literally seen them make a cold sore only have a) one blister instead of many and b) go away in two days on my ex partner. And for outbreaks themselves, take an antiviral. Also, if you can identify when you outbreak exactly then take good care of yourself during that time. Like for myself, I caught it this year and my outbreaks tend to be triggered by menstruation.
Avatar n tn Just over a month later I had the same outbreak on my upper arm, went to a different doctor and he said it was a cold sore. He prescribed Valtrex twice a day for one day, which I did but then noticed another breakout just above the one present, so I upped the dosage of the Valtrex and it went away. Then I went to see an Infectious Disease Specialist and he drew blood, and the tests came back postive for HSV-2. Is that possible considering I have had outbreaks but never on my genitals?
Avatar n tn Hi, with valtrex for first time outbreaks the recommended dosage is 1000mg twice a day for ten days.
Avatar m tn My Dr. wrote a prescription for 1gm daily pill of Valtrex. I already have stomach problems and am trying to minimize potential side effects with highest drug efficacy. Seems logical to take 2 pills at 500mg/pill instead. Would this reduce stomach upset and/or improve absorption of drug? Thx in advance.
Avatar n tn I am a 28 year old male and have experienced fairly frequent cold sore-outbreaks over the past 5 years (about once a month or so). Around late October of 2007, these outbreaks began to reoccur on a weekly basis... to the point where I had them on my face just as often as when I didn't . These outbreaks are not just do not just localized to my mouth. They also show up on the chin and also on the side of my face near the jawline.
Avatar m tn s a few bucks cheaper than abreva which barely got fda approval to say that it heals cold sores faster than using placebo ( only heals a cold sore less than a day sooner than placebo so not worth the money they charge for that teeny tube ). also steeping a tea bag and using it for a compress is helpful. if they have a regular doc, they can just ask them to call in a prescription for them too.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with HSV-1 after my first outbreak in 2008, 27 year old male. It always causes lots of sores inside my mouth. I pretty much NEVER get a cold sore on the outside of my mouth, maybe once in all my 15-20 outbreaks. This has been going on about 4-6 times a year for the past 3 years. Many times my lymph nodes will get huge and sore, and I will often get huge painful sores under my tongue. It all lasts about 3-4 weeks and is very, very painful and brings me down tremendously.
Avatar f tn I currently take Valtrex for cold sore outbreaks, 2 pills at first sign, then 2 pills 12 hours later. Right now I'm traveling overseas and feel an outbreak coming on. Unfortunately, I only have 2 Valtrex pills left, and I'm having a hard time reaching my doctor back home to renew this prescription (there are no refills left on this one.) I did take the first dose of Valtrex, thinking I had 12 hours to reach my dr and have the rx called in, however I haven't been able to reach him.
Avatar m tn Yes, valtrex should help - or acyclovir or famvir. That's what Grace was referring to - daily antiviral treatment. Good luck - I'm sure its frustrating.
Avatar m tn Doctor put me on Valtrex twice a day for 10 days. Medicine worked. I was also using Abreva. After about 6 weeks from the first episode, I got the second and for the past few weeks they have been non-stop. One would heal, within a few days, another one. I have on my lower lip now.I am still taking Valtrex (1Gram) twice a day. In addition, I am taking a lot of Lysine tablets (8000+) I am not sexually active and havent been for sometime. I tested negative for HSV2. I dont where I got it from.
Avatar n tn He said it was all healed and gone so he gave me oral sex as foreplay ...the very next afternoon he developed another cold sore, I am scared he put me at risk of developing a sore on my genitals now. What are the chances of me getting an outbreak now? He has always been very careful but I feel this was a very close call and since it has only been a couple days since that happened, I am worried.
Avatar f tn I only have hsv1 genital , i was on valtrex for the firs year then got off of it, no outbreaks until a month ago
Avatar n tn I am a 30-year-old female who has been tested for Herpes many times. Fortunately, a year after my last sexual encounter, I've received negative IGG results for both HSV I and II. I am now dating a man who just received negative IGG results for HSV II, but positive results for HSV I. Unfortunately, we didn't know his status until after we engaged in unprotected oral sex (three or four times).
127596 tn?1210922622 She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly. Indeed I remembered that the empty bottle was for a seven-day dosage. But in all of the times that I've seen her, I never noticed a cold sore. Of course, she didn't have any sores anywhere else on her body either.
Avatar m tn I have very frequent cold sore outbreaks when not pregnant (at least once every 3 weeks), and always several during pregnancy (this is my 3rd child in 3 years). My children, thus far, have not contracted it from me. I was informed that newborns of mothers with long standing herpes infection do pass antibodies via the placenta, which offer some protection for the first 6 months of life.
Avatar f tn My doctor seems to think no considering I have no outbreaks, been on valtrex 5 years, and my age (50). Your thoughts?
