Valtrex and dosage

Common Questions and Answers about Valtrex and dosage

valtrex

Avatar n tn ve only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Avatar f tn My doctor seems to think no considering I have no outbreaks, been on valtrex 5 years, and my age (50). Your thoughts?
Avatar f tn After 6 months on suppressive therapy, I was having constant vaginal itching and redness. My OB changed my valtrex to 1 gm and had vaginal itching decrease but did not go away. I was prescribed a cream-triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% and it would help to relieve the itch, but it would come back a few days later. I have used the cream for 2 years off and on, until recently due to becoming pregnant. Is itching a side effect of the valtrex?
Avatar m tn But I am still having outbreaks. When having one do I increase my dosage? I asked my doctor and she said no since it was already in my system just continue taking the 500mg daily. Also it seems since I've gotten the diagnosis, that I'm having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression? Or do I need to wait to see my long term response? I have been on the Valacyclovir for 31 days.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar f tn bit I think I will try it. I was thinking of taking the outbeeak dosage starting the day of my infusion and for a few days after. but I would talk ti my doctor first.
Avatar f tn What does valtrex have to do with the timeline of hiv
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar n tn The sore from OB has never been so bad or lasted so long. 6 days ago I started 500mg twice a day and still no relief. Could I be immune to the Valtrex? How long should it take to get relief? Awaiting call back from Doc but holidays and all...
Avatar f tn Taking 400mg x daily when it appeared gone. 400mg 3x daily for 10 days when outbreak. 10 days are up and it's not going away. Should I just stay on the increased dosage longer, increase to 5xdaily or switch to Valtrex?
Avatar f tn There's some evidence that Valtrex works better than cutting transmission by 50%. That's the least amount of reduction you'll get. Your partner could still contract HSV2 with you on Valtrex (especially if you have sex while you are experiencing symptoms), but the risk is really low. Like 2% a year or something. Never heard of Valtrex causing yeast problems, but grace would know the answer to that one. I wouldn't waste my money on lysine.
Avatar m tn Anyone know anything about the dosage I was given and if it will be effective? Is the dosage maybe different because I am having an active outbreak instead of preventing a cold sore from popping up in its very early stages? I am also breastfeeding my baby, so maybe the other dosage would be too high? I'm so confused...
Avatar f tn If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3115841 Here's one that showed a reduction in recurrences, but not in healing time - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar n tn 3 weeks ago I started feeling really ill, I got a very sore throat with swollen glands in my throat, headaches, etc.. a week later i got a cold sore. I was prescribed a two day dosage of valtrex and it went away, but my sore throat never did, this past week i have been freaking out about genital hsv1 because my lymph nodes in my groin were tender, i had pain/ numbness in my left leg from my butt to my knee, but so far no blister, no painful urination, no tingling in vaginal area.....
127596 tn?1210922622 Rather than blowing up about it, I came home and did some research. But I was sad to find that Valtrex is only prescribed for Simplex I, Simplex II and Zosters. So I asked her about it (via instant message - is that bad?). She said she gets cold sores sometimes, and the Valtrex gets rid of them quickly. Indeed I remembered that the empty bottle was for a seven-day dosage. But in all of the times that I've seen her, I never noticed a cold sore.
Avatar m tn I recently had by second OB mid-June (about two weeks ago). This OB was much more mild, with just a few bumps. I took a 3 day dosage of valtrex, and it cleared up. However, only about a week after, I started my third OB which I am currently going through. This one has no actual sores or visible effects, but there is itching, burning, and a lot of tingling. Here are my questions: 1. Is it normal to have this many OBs with HSV-1?
Avatar m tn I have a patient who had classic first infection symptoms, took Valtrex and would not come off, and it took her 9 months to seroconvert, and it only happened when she came off her meds.
Avatar m tn What is the maximum suppression dosage for Valtrex? One doctor told me it was 1 gram daily, but my current doctor prescribed 2 per day and said that was ok to take as long as needed. He said in an immune-compromised patient, it could be 3 grams per day as needed, but no longer-term studies have been done about it to determine the upper-limit of the max safe long-term dose. Is this the consensus opinion?
Avatar f tn More so with 2x daily than 1x daily dosage of Valtrex. Next month I have a regular follow up with my G. I. dr. and will mention this to him. Hope he can give me some answers.
Avatar n tn My doc suggested I take a break from the valtrex for a few days and see how I felt. I felt like a new person who could function again. A week after I stopped I didn't feel as great but still so much better then I was on the meds. Its been a month and I can function mostly like a normal person but I still have ear pain, throat pain, swollen lymph nodes. My doc wants me to keep taking the valtrex.
Avatar m tn I took the pills and about 1/2 day after first dosage, I began to feel itchy and small rashes began to appear and disappear throughout my body. They appeared on my hands, wrist, above the knee, neck, around my rib area, and waist. It's been over 36 hours since I've taken the last dosage and these skin irritations persist. I attached a picture I took of the last occurrence. Any suggestions as to what this may be is greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn Please let me know if i am required to pay again for additional answers and i will. I have been taking valtrex as suppressive since around Jan 8th or so, and was initially diagnosed on Dec 24th 2013. As far as i know that was my first outbreak. All my symptoms luckily have been fairly mild so far and i think valtrax helps, although i guess i dont how it would be without it.
Avatar n tn it started in one area then a week later expanded to another area. my whole labia is blotchy red and bumby and nothing is clearing it. i started upping my dosage of valtrex the second i thought the ob was coming on and now its been going on three weeks and it conitnually gets worse. i tried tea tree oil and lemon balm but nothing is helping it.i am wondering if the valtrex doesnt work for me.
Avatar m tn is valtrex the only medicine that works for genital herpes? obviously nothing can get rid of it but is that the only medicine scientifically proven to help ?
Avatar m tn Just 4 days ago I started to feel itchiness on the same area and it was a few small blisters so the next day I started again the same treatment, the same dosage. The scabs stop growing or spreading and by now are dry. Its been only 2 months apart this second outbreak. The antiviral its really expensive but given the frecuency of the outbreaks should I go under supressive therapy? and if so, Whats the dossage and period of time i should do it? P.S.
