Valacyclovir long term

Common Questions and Answers about Valacyclovir long term

valtrex

Avatar f tn My husband and I both have an outbreak every time we have sex which is ruining our sex life. Long term effects of valtrex use is unknown outside of possible renal/liver imparement & I'm just not sure if I should continue taking it. Anyone else have similar experience or advice? Thanks!
Avatar m tn ) Would you double the valacyclovir dosage or at least up it? What about for long-term suppressive therapy? If someone could in particular elucidate how valacyclovir works and WHY it would be important/ unimportant to adjust that dosage based on wanting to suppress both conditions, you would have my eternal thanks.
Avatar f tn postmarketing experience with valacyclovir provides evidence of favorable safety and efficacy in herpes simplex virus (HSV) management. Valacyclovir enhances acyclovir bioavailability compared with orally administered acyclovir. Long-term use of acyclovir for up to 10 years for HSV suppression is effective and well tolerated.
Avatar m tn Here are my questions (1) Is there any way to assess the risk to her if I were to quit the valayclovir (I would think the risk would be low given the above factors) (2) In a previous post you thought that the study design underestimated the valcyclovir protective effect. Can you say specifically why? (3) Is there any way that taking valcyclovir long-term could reduce my bodies (already) effective capacity to fight this virus. Thanks for your reply.
Avatar f tn I have been on Acyclovir once a day 400mg as a preventative for outbreaks for almost 2 years now. It has significantly helped lessen the amount of outbreaks as well as the duration if I do get one. I had to recently switch doctors and this new doctor is not willing to prescribe it to me anymore stating that the FDA has linked Acyclovir to causing cancer after 1 year of use. I can't find anything on FDA website or Google linking long term effects causing cancer.
Avatar m tn Is once or twice a day more or less effective, morning or night dosing or both. Are there long term health problems related to suppressive therapy? I have read extensive information on Immunovex and Acambis working on Vaccines of a preventative and therapeutic modality. They are utilizing different and emerging technologies than past attempts.
Avatar f tn Are there any other medications / treatments that could boost my immune system capability to suppress the virus over the long term? Are there any clinical trials that I can volunteer for?
Avatar n tn Please tell me of your experience or statistics of an uninfected male getting infected (or not getting infected) in long term couple committed manogomous relationships where the female has genital herpes and the male does not, if sex with a condom is always practiced and sex is avoided when the female feels symptoms come on or when sores are present.
Avatar f tn I am 58 year old, single for many years, woman, with several past partners (but not permiscuious). Recently, tested positive for HSV-1 (which I have had for as long as I can remember-only have an outbreak on lips when over exposed to the sun), but also tested positive for HSV-2, which is new, totally unsuspected, and shocking (test results below). Don't know when or who infected me. Started Valtrex immediately voluntarily, was not suggested by physician.
Avatar m tn It seems that sine I'm getting mixed messages in eagards to Valtrex dosages during an outbreak. I currently take 500 mg of Valacyclovir daily as a suppressant. But I am still having outbreaks. When having one do I increase my dosage? I asked my doctor and she said no since it was already in my system just continue taking the 500mg daily. Also it seems since I've gotten the diagnosis, that I'm having more outbreaks, could it be I need a stronger daily dosage for suppression?
Avatar m tn really no reason to be concerned about the actual dose of medication either. we have info on the safety of acyclovir for almost 30 years now and valtrex for 20 years. No long term side effects from being on them. If you are going to bother to take antivirals, take the right dose so that it's actually working.
Avatar m tn My guess is that what is going on here is neither a new manifestation of your oral herpes nor ARS related to recent HIV acquisition. While I, like your doctor would have probably initiated valacyclovir because of concern that your sore throat and palate lesions might be HSV, my suspicion is that this is not a recurrence of your HSV-1.
Avatar n tn I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, that you weren't snooping -- i.e., you ran into your partner's valacyclovir (Valtrex) prescription by accident. The majority of valacyclovir prescriptions are written for genital herpes. However, it is also prescribed frequently for oral herpes; or perhaps somewhere along the line she had an outbreak of herpes zoster (shingles). But for the rest of this reply let's assume she has genital herpes.
Avatar f tn s winter in most places, and this is not always possible, but when you are home, put on a long shirt, no underwear, and let the air get to it. Sit in front of a fan if you can.) Try tea tree oil. DILUTE IT until you get used to it or your crotch will burn like fire. Wet a cotton ball and add a couple of drops of tea tree oil to the cotton ball, then dab it on the affected area. Definitely wear cotton underwear as Clover suggested, and if you can, avoid pantyhose/tights.
Avatar m tn Welcome back to the forum. Congratulations to both you and your partner for your forthright, common-sense approach to your past warts and her HSV-2 infection. Among monogamous couples in which one person has HSV-2, who take no measures to prevent transmission except avoiding sex during symptomatic outbreaks, and who have unprotected sex an average of 2-3 times per week, transmission to the uninfected partner occurs in about 5% of couples per year.
Avatar m tn I have had patients whose partners had HSV and yet did not acquire the infection themselves over periods of years. My advice would be to stop the valacyclovir and not retest in any manner, shape or form unless you have a lesion to test. The the test to get would be a culture or PCR from a lesion, not a blood test. I hope this comment and perspective is helpful to you.
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar n tn t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
Avatar n tn If your earlier tests were not positive, then I would stop the valacyclovir and wait to see if there is a recurrence. When there is, a test to make sure it is HSV and to know what type (HSV-1 or HSV-2), taken ASAP after the appearance of the lesion should help (type of virus is important- there is little need to take chronic valacyclovir if your lesions turn out to be HSV but are HSV-1. Suppressive therapy is of proven benefit only for persons with HSV-2).
Avatar m tn 1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug? 2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
Avatar n tn As such I contacted my doctor and was prescribed valacyclovir hcl which I took (2 1 gram tablets twice daily). The cold sore remained small and eventually went away. After this I went 1-2 days without taking any Lysine or valacyclovir and on the second day I noticed the cold sore coming back again and now appears to have come back and crusted over. I did not think the new cold sore was actually one but then it crusted over.
Avatar m tn Does it happen every time you take valacyclovir and stay there. If the rash is due to VCV, it should not come and go as long as you are taking the drug? Drug allergies may be either specific to the drug being taken or it may occur within a class of drugs. Thus, if this is a valacyclovir reaction, you might not react to famciclovir (you would however be likely to react to acyclovir since VCV turns into acyclovir within the body). Finally, you state you cannot live without VCV. Why is this?
Avatar n tn I suspect there is little to be gained from valacyclovir therapy unless you have active recurrence of your cold sore and that symptomatic therapy from your physician is more likely to be helpful. Hope this helps.
