valtrex

Avatar f tn that can lessen the numbers of outbreaks or get rid of herpes, I was wondering if anyone tried these meds. and do they work, because most of theses drugs cost lots of money. Thanx for any feedback.
Avatar m tn Hello again Doctor. I just got off the phone with my primary care doctor's triage nurse. They have approved the Valacyclovir prescription for me, however my doctor prescribed the 1000 mg as opposed to the 500 mg pills I asked for. He says I should take 1000 mg per day instead of the 500 mg you recommended, but I trust your expertise on this much more. I suppose I will just have to purchase the 1000 mg and break them in half.
Avatar m tn Oral HSV first. The recurrences you experienced after you stopped valacyclovir- were they all on your gums and has starting the valacyclovir helped. The reason I as is that recurrent oral HSV is more typically involving the lips than gums. Lesions on the gums are more likely to be aphous ulcers which don't respond very well to antiviral therapy. As for your genital lesion, it is most unlikely that this is HSV-2. Here are the reasons I say this: 1.
Avatar f tn I realize I need to get retested but I'm losing sleep over this. I have been checking downstairs daily and noticed these red little painless bumps and they have been there for two weeks. They look like little zits. I have them in two areas not on the moist part but outside the lips near the hair. They are essentially painless and not too itchy. I've been on valacyclovir 500mg per day and the red bumps still won't go away.
Avatar f tn I talk valacyclovir for herpes out breaks I have a high dosage one for when I get them it doesn't harm the baby. Though this is my first pregnancy and I'm 7 weeks. They told me once I get closer to my due date to take them daily so there is no break out.
Avatar n tn t want it there so I started to take Valacyclovir it would keep breaking out every month or so I went on a daily maintenance of 500mg a day. When ever I would miss a pill I start feeling the sensation which I felt when I was going to get an outbreak. I would keep taking it for 5 years. I wanted to stop taking it so I had read some Medical Article's online that Valtrex can rebound.
Avatar m tn I'm not sure that I understand your response. 1. I think that you meant to say that "experience tells us that when people ?quit? taking the valacyclovir, they sometimes do have an outbreak soon after that." This is my concern, that the valacyclovir takes over and that the body's immune response is less engaged in fighting the infection. Do you see what I mean? 2.
Avatar n tn Generic valacyclovir is equally effective as the Valtrex brand. If it isn't working, it suggests that the problem isn't herpes. Probably the best approach at this point is to promptly (within a couple of days) get professionally examined to confirm the diagnosis of the current problem. I'm not necessarily doubting that you have genital herpes, just questioning this particular episode. Alternatively, is there any possibility you have newly acquired herpes?
Avatar n tn As such I contacted my doctor and was prescribed valacyclovir hcl which I took (2 1 gram tablets twice daily). The cold sore remained small and eventually went away. After this I went 1-2 days without taking any Lysine or valacyclovir and on the second day I noticed the cold sore coming back again and now appears to have come back and crusted over. I did not think the new cold sore was actually one but then it crusted over.
Avatar f tn And although recurrent outbreaks can occur while taking valacyclovir, they are rare -- and monthly is unheard of. It is possible your HSV has become resistant to the drug, but that's quite rare as well. As for valacyclovir side effects, you needn't worry.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Herpes 33 years ago and have been using 1000 mg Valacyclovir a day for the past 4 years and have been free of outbreaks until a few weeks ago when I lost my job and became quite stressed. I was able to take one extra tablet of 500 mg which stopped the outbreak from turning into blisters, but I am concerned if this medication is not working for me anymore. I also wonder if Valacyclovir is the same as Valtrex or if Valtrex is stronger? I appreciate your help.
Avatar m tn I'm on daily 1 gram valacyclovir for suppressive therapy. I can feel a new outbreak coming. Would it help if a take the valacyclovir twice daily for a couple of days to help with the OB?
Avatar f tn What are the contraindications of taking penicillin and valacyclovir during the same cycle ? Can they both be taken on the same day ?
Avatar m tn I got infected with genital herpes about 5 months ago, from unprotected oral sex from a striper.... I took valacyclovir 1 g twice a day within 24 hours of the initial episode, and kept taking it until I got better, which took a while (a month almost).... My symptoms (ulcers, itchiness and pain/discomfort) have been recurrent and very persistant since. I think I have had symptoms 3-4 out of every 5 days since day one.
Avatar n tn I have read that Valtrex and Valacyclovir can be used for the suppression of herpes , does that hold true for Valcivir also,, isn't Valacyclovir the generic of Valciver ,, if yes what is the usual dosage for the suppression of the virus?
Avatar f tn I had a standard HIV test done on the first day of symptoms (about a week after my last sexual exposure) and that test came back negative. Doc now has me on valacyclovir because he thinks i have oral herpes. The valacyclovir has taken much of my fever away. And the nystatin and valacyclovir have together mostly cleared up my tongue sores and blisters. But I feel like without the valacyclovir, i'd be very very sick. Also my lymph node on the right side of my groin is still quite swollen.
Avatar f tn thank you so much for giving me these tips. I'm taking Valacyclovir following my doctor's prescription. I maybe try the topical cream you suggested to qucikly ease leaking fluid.
Avatar n tn My question is, can Valacyclovir be taken as a preventative measure if I take it a few days in advance of the big event? If so, what dosage? Thanks.
Avatar m tn ) Would you double the valacyclovir dosage or at least up it? What about for long-term suppressive therapy? If someone could in particular elucidate how valacyclovir works and WHY it would be important/ unimportant to adjust that dosage based on wanting to suppress both conditions, you would have my eternal thanks.
Avatar m tn refer to other drugs or to anti-HSV drugs? If you are taking valacyclovir or another anti-herpes drug, does your current outbreak frequency (twice a year) mean on treatment or before you started suppressive therapy? Pending that information, my preliminary responses to your questions: 1) There is a school of thought that the standard suppressive dose of valacyclovir (500 mg once daily) might be on the low side, i.e. that double that dose (1 gram) would be more effective.
Avatar m tn My dr prescribed me with 30 1g of valacyclovir with no instructions on taking them. I took 1g of valacyclovir every day for 30 days. My last day taking valacyclovir was 02-28-18. I took a igG herpeselect blood on 4-3-18 and it was negative. I was told that the antivirals affected my test and i would have to be off of them for 12 weeks. So i tested again for hsv 1 and 2 on 05-24-18 exactly 12 weeks off of antivirals and it was negative.
Avatar n tn So, you have, like a lot of people, herpes simplex 1. It IS contagious so be careful of that so you don't spread it to others. Don't pick the sores off. Take the medicine and if you feel a tingle like another cold sore is coming, use the valacyclovir. You may have angiokeratoma of Fordyce which normally goes away if left alone.
Avatar f tn I believe (though I could be wrong) valacyclovir is the only drug that is approved by the FDA for suppressive therapy, because it's the only drug that has had an FDA registered clinical trial performed for this purpose. However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus.
Avatar m tn Clinically symptomatic HSV-2 infection developed in 4 of 743 susceptible partners who were given valacyclovir, as compared with 16 of 741 who were given placebo (hazard ratio, 0.25; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.08 to 0.75; P=0.008). Overall, acquisition of HSV-2 was observed in 14 of the susceptible partners who received valacyclovir (1.9 percent), as compared with 27 (3.6 percent) who received placebo (hazard ratio, 0.52; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.27 to 0.99; P=0.04).
