Use of seroquel in elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Use of seroquel in elderly

seroquel

Avatar m tn Medications in the elderly is tricky, just as it is in children. The geriatric population tends to be more sensitive to medications and often require closer monitoring. Is your grandmother being seen by a doctor who specializes in geriatric patients? If not, that may be something to think about. The only medication you listed that I could imagine might be an issue is the Seroquel, the other medications shouldn't really cause a behavioral/mood issue.
Avatar n tn The Department of Geriatrics at Johns Hopkins University conducted a dedicated seminar at Mount Sinai Hospital geriatrics department three years ago warning against inappropriate use of risperdal in the elderly.
Avatar n tn Combining Ambien and Seroquel can cause central nervous system and respiratory depressant effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Please discuss with your doctor for alternate medications. In the meantime, I would strongly caution you not to drive or operate heavy machinery while on these medications as you might injure yourself or others. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn seroquel is an anti-psychotic that really isn't for the purpose of treating anxiety....although from what I've seen in someone I know taking it is a reduction in the 'racy mind' symptom...and helps to induce sleep. rmjm is the link to diabetes from long term high doses?
603015 tn?1329862973 e. for 7 consecutive years now, in fact as IL said it helped my OCD. only in 2006 that i thought i was ok and needed no drugs anymore so i stopped it and lived on anafranil (tricyclic AD) but it didn't take me more than 3 months to turn manic and dx bipolar. So whereas it's an atypical AP but it also possesses a stabilization property. Since it was one of the oldest produced atypicals and perhaps the oldest even, most pdocs start by it along with an anxiolytic.
Avatar f tn And even standard psychiatric guidelines are now stating to use anti-psychotics with caution in the elderly given that the rate of emergent tardive dyskinesia as well as other side effects of current anti-psychotics are more severe in an older population. Even for someone who needed the medications Klonopin already is an anti-anxiety drug. Xanax is not needed as well and can be highly addictive. Celexa is a standard SSRI anti-depressent.
Avatar n tn Right now pdocs use AD in conjunction with mood stabilizers to maintain control over depressions . So if one is not working for you then you will have to try others until your brain finds one that works best. Realize that nothing is sure-fire success yet, controlling mania and depression, but we are headed in the right direction.
Avatar f tn s unlikely you have tardive dyskenisia (TD) from your Seroquel use as it usually results from long term use. Seroquel does not cause blepharospasms, but benzodiazepine withdrawal can. Dry eye can also cause blepharospasms. Blepharospasms are not necessarily permanent, but they can be. Some people will have it resolve after a few days to a week. If it persists, there are some treatments that you could talk to your doctor about, such as botox.
574118 tn?1305135284 I have long been questioning why am i taking so much seroquel (150mg) and only 1mg apexidone (egyptian brand for risperidone) which made me try to reduce the first by all means but in vain, until i discovered that my 1mg of the 2nd equals 100 of the 1st. So by taking 150mg seroquel i am in fact taking 1.5mg of risperidone only. I was trying hard to reduce my seroquel by 50mg meaning trying to reduce my apexidone by 0.5mg which is nonsense.
1044813 tn?1370494406 Hi Emily, Thank you for your reply. Seroquel (quetiapine) is an anti-psychotic medication that originally was approved for use on Schizophrenia but has shown to work for both Bipolar-Manic episode and Bipolar-Depressive episodes. It is quickly becoming a very common prescribed medication for those with Bipolar. With this medication now becoming a common and approved use I was recommending that it be added on it's own.
1115572 tn?1258804496 I am on Seroquel for Bipolar Disorder. Had 3 eye examinations, one of them at a community health check which said I have cataract and need operation. Second examination at specialist eye hospital - see no cataract. Third examination - slight cataract. I am 60 and the doctor at the eye hospital (before he came up with a verdict of "see no cataract" commented - cataract at 60? What is going on in this world? My father was diabetic which probably contributed to a stroke.
Avatar f tn I find since I've been on seroquel/ lamictal that I haven't had a manic outbreak in over 2 years. I use to take seroquel alone & had several outbreaks one after another. For me the combination works!
534105 tn?1226157177 12 years ago I used the same combination (60mg of cymbalta and 1.0mg of clonazepam daily with good success). Hope I will improve in a copuple of weeks once the quetiapine leaves.
Avatar f tn If she is taking that much of it there is 325 mg. of aspirin in each pill. That is alot of aspirin to consume even for a younger person. It could cause bleeding problems in the stomach and intestines as well as excessive bruising. I agree with Molly in regards to asking a doctor to change her medication to something long acting or even just Oxycodone with no other additives such as aspirin or acetomenophin. It is available in 5mg and 10mg doses. Good luck.
Avatar m tn Seroquel is a medication used for bi-polar individuals. Dont mess with your brain chemistry unless you feel you have plenty of it.......only use for seroquel during w/d's may be the sedative effect from the first several doses. Benadryl would work as well.
Avatar f tn s for approx 30years) takes seroquel with no problems. In fact, he has noticed a decrease in his nightmares and odd hallucinations. so if your doctor has recommended it, it may be worth a try. They should normally suggest starting with a small dose, so you can see how you go. You can always run it past your neurologist too if you are still unsure.
736475 tn?1281259327 does anyone have info about long term use of seroquel and how it affects you? my hubby tried to stop taking it and got all messed up. they are 50mg xr. thanks.
Avatar n tn A psychiatrist friend of mine suggested the possibility of taking 1 mg of Zyprexa. However, he cautioned that I should talk to my regular psychiatrist about this. This is why I just wanted to get feedback if anyone has tried this before.
Avatar f tn This happened twice more, before my thyroid finally just stopped working completely when I was 57 yrs old and I put on 30 lbs in 3 months, in spite of a physically demanding job, calorie restriction, etc. I've since developed insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome and gained an additional 20 pounds, in spite of a strict diet, tracking calories, exercise, etc.
1472584 tn?1289778898 Anxiety disorder is associated with cold sweats. I suggest you to consult psychiatrist for dose changes and as well as use of central anti cholinergics. Jaw pain and painful lump can be due to infection of salivary gland like parotitis, infected foci from the ear infection. If the pain won’t subside or there is progressive worsening then you may need to undergo x-ray of jaw, serum alkaline phosphatase and calcitonin level, radio imaging of the jaw joint will help to evaluate.
1516809 tn?1345082764 Several years ago the geriatrics department of Johns Hopkins conducted a special seminar at Mount Sinai geriatrics center in New York specifically warning physicians of the dangers of respirdal and the inappropriateness of administration in the elderly. There are physicians who disagree with this conclusion and continue to prescribe the medication.
Avatar n tn If this lasts longer you may have to place her in an advanced care setting where she can be taken care of...sleep medications are tricky because they add confusion so if use any, use only small doses of short acting ones like ambien.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Seroquel xr 150 mg for about a month with no problem, all of a sudden i have started getting bad muscle spasms that last hours. I can't take it any more, i just take my Prozac and that alone is not helping. Is this a common side affect? will it go away? why did it start after i had been taking the medicine for over a month with no problem?
518117 tn?1429276273 Namaste, Explanation of the issues (and sequence of events) surrounding the lawsuits that claim that the use of Seroquel, Zyprexa and Risperdal caused health problems such as pancreatitis and diabetes and stroke. Zyprexa, like Risperdal and Seroquel, has been associated with serious side effects in patients, especially those who have already been diagnosed with diabetes.
