Avatar n tn ve been on rimadyl this past week and yesterday he switched her to prednisone. she had her last pill of the rimadyl at 1030 the morning of the 24th. the vet told me to wait 12 hours before giving her the prednisone, but he wasn't convincing when he told me so I came to the internet to find out how long to wait now I don't know what to do if she has to go another 2 days without any kind of pain medication. any suggestions missfits4me?
Avatar n tn There is the possibility that continued use of prednisone can cause overactive adrenal glands resulting in too much cortisol in the body (this is one of the body's natural steroids). Since steroids suppress the immune system, llike zodiacqueen has mentioned, chronic recurrent infections can occur. Other signs are increased drinking and urination, voracious appetite, hair loss, and enlarged belly.
Avatar m tn I started Sophie on Atopica yesterday along with predawns. She got relief from the use of the prednisone, and hopefully the Atopica will give her long term relief. My vet said she may have some vomiting, but they get used to the Atopica over time. He said he had to give it to his dog with some food in order to keep it down. He had good results with it. Did your dog have any vomiting? Your results help me decide to give it to Sophie. Thanks for the info. I will keep you posted.

Confused Patient.
Avatar m tn My dog jumped up on the counter and got my other dogs Med bottle and ate all the pills and chewed the bottle before I saw you. Will this hurt her?mit was a very low dosage of prednisone about 7 days worth.
Avatar f tn Only an ordinary person with some knowledge of dogs and a wish to be of help if possible, if and when I can. But I don't know what this could be. Prednisone is for short term treatment only. It sound as if it is just putting a band-aid on the situation, because she is still getting these attacks, so that means it isn't anywhere near solved. Obviously, a pain killing medicine would be a good idea to have as a stand-by to use during an attack.
82818 tn?1206989814 I had this with the Dachund I had, they gain a lot of weight on Prednisone ,and he drank copious amounts of water, I may have been unlucky but he got diabetes and the Vet said the prednisone certainly hadnt helped, have you ever thought of googling in case there is any Natural remedy out there, I will also check around I go to a great Health food store they may have Animal stuff. .
2065896 tn?1373685384 Yep, prednisone (long-term) can cause diabetes both in humans and dogs. One of our dogs (a Toy Fox Terrier) was on prednisone for about 8 months due to health problems including allergies, he developed diabetes, and now is on insulin and a low-carbohydrate diet. (I think it's more likely in dogs to cause diabetes, I was on prednisone at high doses from 2-14 years old and I have some long-term side effects that do remain but I don't have diabetes.) Have you tried adjusting her diet?
Avatar m tn She had to go on Prednisone because the Cushings meds worked too well, but the Prednisone made her worse. Good ;luck in trying to find the right dosage and meds, its really hard.
Avatar f tn Shampooing once a week with a medicated shampoo helps remove allergens from the skin. Omega Fatty Acids are a great supplement to add to a dogs diet and take some time to kick in but are cheap and safe and help not only with skin health but also with arthritis, cardiovascular health, and the overall immune system. Lastly, antihistamines can be useful is taking the edge off. Managing atopic dermatitis is always a case by case basis so discuss your concerns with your vet and good luck.
612551 tn?1450022175 Temaril-P has been found to be effective therapy and adjunctive therapy in various cough conditions of dogs. Therefore, in addition to its antipruritic action, Temaril-P is recommended for the treatment of “kennel cough” or tracheobronchitis, bronchitis including all allergic bronchitis and infections and coughs of nonspecific origin. (Coughs due to cardiac insufficiencies would not be expected to respond to Temaril-P therapy.
Avatar f tn I recently had one of my dogs treated for a disc problem in her neck. She was given a decreasing dose of Prednisone to take over 10 days which helped her considerably. Now, my other dog (same size and age) is showing symptoms of the same condition. I want to try the Pred on him but I don't have any left. Instead, I have a large bottle of Prednisolone. If I gave Ruby 40 mg's of PredNISONE, would I now give 40mg of PredNISOLONE? Or would the dose be different?
3116756 tn?1341922971 (Since your dog has too much prednisone/ cortisol ) It will take a while for the prednisone to get out of your dogs system, and the next dose of lysodren may do the trick. It may also reduce too much coritsol...in which case, you may end up having to give her another Prednisone....! So keep the Prednisone handy, and keep watchful for signs of lysodren overdose/ toxicity....( I assume the vet has informed you of what to watch for )......
Avatar f tn I need more guidance ito recognising need for / frequency / and amount of prednisone to take. Currently I respond to Px weakness, but I need more information. Loss of appetite, bad headache, mental slowdown, very slight tremor - all plus significant weakness, and post Px demand in past 3 days. So, all Re: adrenal need? How much and how often to take supplements? What are the Sx and Sx of too much supplementation? [Also I take thyroid supplement .175 and growth hormone .
793908 tn?1294705109 Julie (our mini Poodle 9 yrs. old) had Cushings for quite a few years before it was confirmed in Feb. 09. She was tested 4 yrs. ago & it was negative but I never believed that. Julie started Trilostane 22.5 mg. in March. She was doing better in June with the blood test numbers & than got another attack of Pancreatitis, in 6 mos. time. She stayed at the Vets for 4 days & came home better.
Avatar n tn in looking at the package insert for Comfortis, there is no mention of weakness as a side effect of the drug in either the clinical studies on normal dogs, or the toxicity studies on laboratory dogs (the most common side effect was stomach upset in about 5-10%).
Avatar m tn The liver does most of the processing of toxins, from life in general and from medications too. Giving the liver some support may reduce stress on kidneys also. There is some information here: http://www.liversupport.com/can-milk-thistle-help-your-pet/ There is more info. on this site, including suggested dosage: http://nextgendog.
4413820 tn?1354210055 Yes the prednisone CAN be harmful, but not definitely. Depends on how much and how often you give it to her. It decreases immune respose so it can increase her risk of getting bacterial and viral infections such as pneumonia. I have two pugs and an English bulldog. Both pugs were on prednisone (5 mg once daily) for skin allergies. One pug has had pneumonia 3 times in one year and is def no long taking the prednisone anymore, because is more than likely the cause. The other pug takes 2.
Avatar f tn Additionally, although Atopica is a better choice than steroids for long term use, it can cost hundreds of dollars per month for a large dog. In dogs that the milder therapies don't help, and that need long term steroids or Atopica, evaluation by a veterinary dermatologist (www.acvd.org) for allergy skin testing and desensitization injections can identify and treat the cause of the itching skin and feet, rather than just treating the symptoms with medications.
Avatar f tn I'd be only guessing, but I've known of several boxers with allergies that manifested in welts. Have you recently changed her food or her bedding?
Avatar n tn Theoretically Prednisone can cause cleft lip if used in first trimester (Your wife has already crossed that stage). Also steroids are given in preterm labour at 32 weeks to bring about lung maturity of the fetus...i think using it is safe after 16 wks. hope your dr knows about your wife's pregnancy.
Avatar f tn My 4-pound chi was put on 4 mg/day of prednisone by his neurologist and it's making him a wreck. He's definitely hungry which is ok, but also lethargic, shaking, has insomnia (I swear the dog hasn't slept in 5 days), panting, lying in a funny position with head stretched out in front of him.
Avatar n tn Aluminum hydroxide (ALOH) is currently recommended by Board Certified Veterinary Internists at the University of Davis, veterinary hospital as the product of choice to use in pets to effectively bind and eliminate excess phosphorus from the body. It has effectively replaced Epikacin for this purpose. Epikacin, is an old Calcium based product, formerly used to bind excess phosphorus and help eliminate it from the body, in pets with kidney failure.
Avatar n tn One often over-looked area in dog allergies is shampoo. Sometimes people use human shampoo on their dogs because it smells good, but the perfumes can cause allergic reactions. That's one reason that the best dog shampoos have little, if any, odor at all. I'm obviously grasping at straws here, so hopefully someone else with more allergy experience and advice than I can provide.
Avatar m tn I have had test after test and they can find nothing for this. I refuse to get rid of my dogs. They are too old and comfortable where they are, and i adore them, so I'll have to wait some time to see if that could of been it or not. Anyway, do you have pets? My doctor says that when you're allergic to them, this can happen. I also had a lyrnoscopy done. They thought it might be GERD. The medicine for that never did work for me though, but you might ask about that.....
