Urine test strips ketones

Common Questions and Answers about Urine test strips ketones

My daughter is almost 11mo of age. She is about 28 1/2 in in height and about 22lbs. I have used the over the counter diabetic ketone strips. Her breath usually smells like nail polish remover which was my indication that something wasn't right.
But I am also trying to research this to give myself a little peace of mind until then. BTW, I have test strips here at home that my doc gave me to test for infection. I was testing myself and my girls (2.5 year old twins) thought it would be fun to test too. LOL!
OK, so my Dr said my urinalysis came back with trace of ketones and protein in my urine. He said its probably not significant and should check it again another day. Can someone tell me how common or uncommon that is? I hadnt eatin like like 16 hours before hand, except for alittle something maybe 20 minutes before I gave the urine sample. Could this have caused it? I was really worried since I get cloudy urine after eating dairy, and only after dairy.
If I get a Urine Analysis test, will THC show up in the results, even if they're just looking for bacteria?
UrinBilirubin, Blood, Glucose, Ketones, Leukocytes, Nitrite, PH levels, Protein, Specific gravity, Urobilinogen If everything is OK with one of these tests then no further investigation is needed?
Any! The urine tests are not very accurate and there are now (expensive) test strips and meters out there that measure ketones in the blood (just like doing a blood sugar test). That's much more accurate and what I would recommend for a child.
I was worried about my sugar levels so I bought some urine test strips and checked my urine . It was reading a trace of ketones. Is this something to be concerned about. I do drink a lot of soda. Is there a certain time of day I should check my urine to get an accurate reading . I just got over having a kidney stone. When I went back to the urologist he did ct scan and took a urine sample and he told me the stone was gone.
Last night he tested positive for keytones in his urine. According to the test strips he had moderate to large ketones. Today he continues to test positive but with definate large results. I took him to see his pediatric doctor today and he actually call in an associate to look at him, also. Although together the two doctors ran all kinds of test on my grandson all they could really find wrong with him was large levels of keytones, a fever, and general flu like symtoms.
But no you can't see the keytones in your urine, otherwise they wouldn't have you do a test to see how concentrated they are. Please check out medicaid or medicare to see if they will help you through your current dillemma.
He seemed very confused about the fact I only have cloudy urine after eating dairy. He did a dip stick test, and everything was normal, except ketones. There was a slight detection of ketones. He said it likely wasnt diabetes, because there was no sugar in my urine. I hadnt eaten in like 16 hours, and he said that could have caused it. I was sent for another urine test at a lab, and should get results tomorrow. Does this sound worrisome?
Test strips that change color to reveal the amount of a substance in a liquid (for example, sugar in urine, ketones in urine, certain meds/drugs in urine, high-school "litmus paper" tests for the amount of acid or base), give a general indication of how much of that substance is present in the liquid. The tests that give an exact number (such as a modern blood sugar meter) gives a more precise indication.
no, I have only had one urine test since I moved over from my fertility doctor. I am 31 weeks. Is that weird? I wondered why I haven't had to do it, now I am going to worry about it. I did have the glucose test, but that was blood-and negative.
You can get some ketone testing strips at the pharmacist (it's a urine test). If you take the test first thing in the morning and it shows positive for ketones, that means you are burning fat, but if it stays beige, you are not showing evidence of fat burning. If you are not burning (metabolizing) your stored fat, you will still be hungry.
I am unsure about what I have, but I can tell you that when I tested my blood sugar, after fasting (14 hours), it was about 124, but then I realized the test strips were expired. I went to the doctor and the found a high amount of protein in my urine, and also ketones, but no sugar in. (I was tested about two hours after a large meal too, so the ketones were not out of starvation, and I do not exercise.) They have always seen protein in my urine also.
At present, I am on a suppressive dose of Noroxin (400 mg/day for 8 months). i have a reagent strips for urine-analysis that I bought from a pharmaceutical company so that I could test my urine at home. For several days (on and off), I have tested positive for red blood cells in my urine...but not heavy white cells or nitrates. I thought I developed a UTI and simply caught it early so the urgent care doc put me on Augmentin. The blood went away for ~5 days and then returned.
If I remember right if the test strip turnes pick you have ketones in your urine, plus the strip tells you if there is blood, glucose, and a couple other things. But If I were you I would go get checked out just incase. I hope this helps.
My short-acting (or bolus) is adjusted based on my BG readings and presence of ketones. Test for ketones (urine strips are available w/o Rx) and be prepared to get to an ER if ketones are high and BG is high and will not respond to insulin. The usual sick day rules are helpful -- try to take on clear fluids and do test often - noting patterns. Good luck Becca's mom. I hope Becca feels better soon.
The strips don't test for drugs the only drug test they do is when u go into labor
Other things can cause those symptoms, too, however. You might consider buying some urine strips that test for glucose, too. Some ketosticks are combination sticks and give a reading for both glucose & ketones. If she tests with high levels of both -- then it's important for her to be seen at ER quickly because things could go from bad to worse quickly. Your vigilence & problem solving are terrific, by the way.
You might also go to the pharmacy and pick up a bottle of ketone/glucose strips. You take one and dip it in a urine sample or you can just stick it in the stream (sorry--graphic, but anyway). Anyone can run ketones as I understand it (Atkins dieters love those strips...grrr). But it may be revealing if you are running ketones and spilling glucose as well. Do non-diabetics spill glucose at all? Not a doc, but I don't think so. Good luck to you...as GiJoe says...
All was good and fine thereafter until I noticed that my new pack of ketoacidosis strips that I always get but never use had a proteinuria check on them. The test came back on the lighter side of trace, but with the foam getting worse in my urine. I am once again worried. Is it time to make my first visit with a nephro?
8 (not a fever, but elevated) for a couple of weeks. I had some urine test strips (had them for my kids who have had a couple of UTI's) and decided to check my urine to make sure no infection was causing my higher temp. I had eaten round steak for supper and when I checked my urine the strip went straight to black on the ketones (normal is lavender). I am by no means on the Atkins diet. I enjoy eating meat, but I eat more carbs then meat, so I was a bit baffled.
2, this can be checked by a doctor through urinalysis test. Or Ketosis can be checked by using special urine test strips which measure the level of ketones in the urine which you can obtained at local drug store. Blood Glucose test for diabetes by doctor will get you started. It can tell if you are hyper or hypo-glycemic which hypo is diabetes and doctor will probably want further test done to verify and confirm.
If you notice that the dipsticks have darkened in the container BEFORE you use them to test your urine, contact the company. I buy urine test strips from pulmolab listed below. I buy the cheaper ones, their about $25 fro 100 test strips, about the best price I have found and the company support is excellent. If you have questions or if you get some strips that have a problem they have a good customer service dept. I just buy the packs of plastic cups at Walmart.
However, I've done the ketone urine test strips and I come up completely negative. I've also had negative results in my blood work for ketones. I think my hypothyroidism is making my body do weird things. Thanks again.
See what his doctor's office says. You could always purchase urine test strips (I don't believe that you need a prescription) at your local pharmacy and check him out at home. There are strips that indicate sugar and also ketones in the urine. If either of these is positive, you need to get him medical attention immediately as this is very serious. Good luck with your son and please keep us posted as to how he makes out.
As DM and Mr. Gatorade pointed out, 400-500 are dangerously high bg levels. The issue is more the buildup of ketones in the blood stream (the ketoacidosis that dm mentioned). From your msg I cannot tell if his BG stays at 400-500 or if it gets there and then you can gradually bring it down. BUy some urine test strips & do test for ketones. If his level is high, get him to the ER ... I would also question your insulin vials at this point. It is still summer and is hot in many areas.
You mention that diabetes does run in the family, so if you have access to a blood glucose monitor, you may want to check her bg level yourself. You can also purchase urine test strips that indicate sugar levels, however they are several hours old, and also if ketones are present in the urine. If she is showing ketones, this is extremely urgent and you should seek immediate medical attention.
