Testing the urine is one way to check for ketones. You can pick up urine test strips at your local drug store. Just follow the instruction to do the test. I called the doc and he said not to be concerned unless she also had glucose in her urine. He does want to see her Monday for testing. But I am also trying to research this to give myself a little peace of mind until then.
BTW, I have test strips here at home that my doc gave me to test for infection. I was testing myself and my girls (2.5 year old twins) thought it would be fun to test too. LOL!
Another thing. Do you have any ketone strips? If not you can buy them at any pharmacy or grocery store in the diabetes area. Run one of the strips under your dog's urine stream and see if he has ketones in his urine. If he does he needs to get into the vet's ASAP.
I took him to the doctors who’s referred us to the hospital and we’ve got the appointment for that this week, the gp told me to test his urine twice daily so I bought some strips from the pharmacy (£20 for 24!) and used them all up so I bought more online as I couldn’t afford that price again, they’re the same brand (siemens) but they test for a few extra things and I’d really appreciate anyone who knows wether to treat the bilirubin as + or -.
Last night he tested positive for keytones in his urine. According to the test strips he had moderate to large ketones. Today he continues to test positive but with definate large results. I took him to see his pediatric doctor today and he actually call in an associate to look at him, also. Although together the two doctors ran all kinds of test on my grandson all they could really find wrong with him was large levels of keytones, a fever, and general flu like symtoms.
The alcohol test may not be able to distinguish between ketones in diabetes and alcohol. So for sure ketones could affect the test results. You need to discuss this specifically with the pain clinic doctors. You may need to show them proof about your blood sugar levels / ketones.
You may need to do ketone testing as well.

You might also go to the pharmacy and pick up a bottle of ketone/glucose strips. You take one and dip it in a urine sample or you can just stick it in the stream (sorry--graphic, but anyway). Anyone can run ketones as I understand it (Atkins dieters love those strips...grrr). But it may be revealing if you are running ketones and spilling glucose as well. Do non-diabetics spill glucose at all? Not a doc, but I don't think so. Good luck to you...as GiJoe says...
The presence of ketones doesn't effect a hpt. I had ketones in my urine due to being dehydrated from morning sickness, and I continuously tested positive. Diabetes doesn't render false negative pregnancy tests either.
if you drink a large amount of any liquid and use the bathroom frequently, you run the risk of diluting your urine.
The test strips that I use are 10LG Parameter Urine Reagent Strips which can be bought on line at a reasonable price.
These strips detect Leukocytes, Nitrite, Urobilinogen, Protein, pH, Blood, Specific Gravity, Ketone, Bilirubin, Glucose.
You can get strips that detect less.
The one that would be of interest if someone is suffering from dehydration is the Specific Gravity reading.
depending on a1c or daily blood sugar counts and medications (metformin for example), ketones might be involved. Keto-diastix is one brand of cheap strips that will give general blood sugar counts and ketone levels. These use urine instead of blood. Experiment with those, record the info and then ask your doctor to explain anything needed about it...
Now When he had the fever doctor advised us to do a urine routine test and when i got the reports i was shocked to see ketone bodies (3+) in his urine but his glucose and protine was negative for urine test and he had no urine infection.
Now when i looked through internet about the Ketones i found that it has something to do with Diabetes. I am very scared of this. No one in mine and my wifes family has diabetes and so i feel my son may not have this and that to he is so yuong to have this.

having a burning sensation in my kidneys and nausea I did a urine test strip first thing this morning. All results were fine apart from trace leukocytes, highest specific gravity and highest ketones.
I do not take medication and do not feel unwell enough to go to the doctor
I am not sure what these mean and should I worry?
There are times when I check my urine for ketones when my blood glucose is particularly high. For example, this morning before I had eaten a bite, my blood sugar was 406. I took him into the doc this past Wed. for unusually poor behavior the past couple of weeks, and a couple of episodes of unrinary incontinence. I thought he may have a UTI or earache. They did a urinalysis and the only abnormal was KETONES-15 (low). They want to repeat it in a month.
