My stepson is now living with us after graduating from rehab and then getting kicked out of a transitional home. He was randomly drug tested and his urine dip showed trace evidence of opiates. He is taking Depakote and Trazadone and swares he has taken nothing else. His last drug test at rehab a few days earlier was clean. Well most opiates stay in your system for up to 7-8 days at most. And if the drug test isn't anything too serious you can fake it or something. I was on probation and found that drinking water until your urine is clear for a whole will trick your body into just flushing the water out with out going through the kidneys. But in regards to your addiction(should I call it?) you can't go through life taking pills. I'm 21 and have been addicted since I was 16.

we had a urine test done which came back positive. I need help understanding the results. the results cutoff point is 100 ng/ml however the results were much higher(in the thousands). What does this mean. we need to know how many pills they took. Can anyone please help?

Here is some surprising info. The urine test the Veterans Admin uses to "test" people for the Fentanyl Patch use... it does not test for the drug. It is a dummy test. They expect you to pop negative results for Opioids. Since Fentanyl is a synthetic derivative it will not test sensitive to the test. They would have to run a more expensive Immuno Assay test (Spelling?). They do the test to make sure you are not taking another prescription drug not prescribed by their doctors.....

s also a special Methadone test. The only advice I can give is to request a confirmation screen where the urine is sent off for analysis instead of the standard test strips. Also, you can request a blood test and offer to pay for it yourself if necessary. Drug testing is not an exact science.

read urine specimen cups (the one with lines on it for a positive or negative result for myriad different opiates, etc. I failed my urine test (all negative for opiates that should be in my system) a couple of months ago. My doctor told me the cup must have been defective and left it at that. I'm very lucky to have a good relationship built on trust with my pain management doctor.

To my knowledge skmedline is correct. The lab will contact you if opiates are discovered in your urine drug test. You'll be given an opportunity to provide documented information from your prescribing physician that explains the positive results. At least that is how it works in my state. Unless you are applying for a position that deems opiate prescriptions to be dangerous, such as driving, you should not have to be concerned over prescription opiates. Good Luck to you.
