82861 tn?1333453911 Thanks everyone for this valuable information. And thanks Misfits4me for mentioning that simple urine test, which could make all the difference in treating this terrible disease in the early stages. (I'm copying this all to my computer in case I should ever need this info!
Avatar n tn hello, i have three dogs, one female and two males (her pups) when the female urinates, the two males lick her urine, is this harmful? all shots are up to date. thank you.

9644933 tn?1407768890 Hi ... and I too hope you won't need to be back, but you are very welcome to join in discussions, because the experience and knowledge gained during this period may just be helpful to someone else. We are really just one huge self-help group here.
Avatar f tn Thanks for the info! We take our dogs in every 6 months for check-ups which includes a urinalysis, so we'll keep an eye on them. Our "healthy" dog has had a couple of UTIs in the past, so perhaps this is a better diet for him anyways. While we're on the topic of UTIs, I found a product called the pet check up that sends a kit to pet owners which lets them test their own dog's urine monthly for various problems and diseases, including UTIs.

172023 tn?1334672284 At that time there was basically nothing for dogs w/ diabetes. I also bought a human diabetic cook book and made foods/treats for him with that. So maybe there are cook books w/ recipes for people who have urinary stones too?
Avatar m tn Dialysis for dogs has been available for about 10yrs. The cost is often prohibitive for most people, being around £25,000 for the initial treatment alone. Kidney transplants are also now available for dogs, though their success is not guaranteed - and in fact they are far less successful than in cats having the same operation. It may be difficult to find a canine medical centre able to offer this unusual treatment, but they are out there if you do your research.
Avatar f tn When the vet drains the gland, if blood is present she gets treated for an infection. Most dogs can just take a simple course of antibiotics for this, but with Pumpkin, we infuse the gland with animax ( through use of a needle), and then she is on antibiotics for a month. The few times she didn't present w/the 'smell symptom' her anal gland got impacted and swelled up like a large cherry on her butt.
1660289 tn?1302556798 The prescription diets for stones are created to alter the PH of the urine to make the urine less conducive to the formation of stones that have been found, however, as you said, they are typically not of the highest quality. At the same time, we've seen cases where giving the prescription diet turned the urine in the opposite direction to the degree that crystals developed. In my opinion and experience, it is healthier for a dog to try for the results via a more natural diet.
Avatar m tn Unless your dogs have been drinking out of the toilet, I doubt they are carrying the bacteria. If you want to know for certain, ask your vet to do a test for it. Is it possible the dogs are having accidents in the house because your father is too sick to let them out regularly?
Avatar m tn My two dogs (30 lb beagle & 62 lb pit mix) got into a box of raisin bran. When I got home from work I discovered this and IMMEDIATELY rushed them to the vet ER. The vet induced vomiting and gave them activated charcoal to mitigate the toxins. The ER vet said it appeared as if all of the raisins were discharged during the forced vomiting session and that he didn't think this would be anything to worry about.
Avatar n tn I read your post because my Westie has (it appears) food allergies. I have no idea what "UTIs" is, can you spell out? I'm sure there are some "high quality" treats, but most if not all of the stuff on the super market shelf is junk, in my opinion. I can't give any of them to my dog. I have, however, made liberal use of them with other dogs and no problems have developed.
Avatar m tn We have taken her to the vet and he did blood work, urine sample, and X-rays. For the most part every thing was normal. The X-ray , though, did show a mottled area (that should be smooth) at the bottom of the diaphragm, in a pic it looks like the liver area. He said that he would suggest taking her to an oncologist. My question … how many days can dog go without food (she is drinking). She weighs 17 pounds.
Avatar f tn What are the effects of cat urine from 8 cats & 3 dogs on the health of my Great-grandson ? He has asthma.
Avatar f tn My doctor has an assistant, not a nurse, who assists her with checking patient vitals, etc. the assistant makes frequent demands for a urine test...4 in the last 8 months which seem excessive to me. She gets quite testy if I am unable to comply and has left an unpleasant message on my phone once. Today she brought me a full paper cup of water and insisted I drink it. Am I legally required to submit to these tests? Is there a certain number of urine tests required per year?
Avatar n tn Dark urine is not a good sign, and usually means a high bilirubin count, which indicates a problem with the liver and/or pancreas. Your dog definitely needs a trip to the vet to figure out what is going on inside. Please post back and let us know your vet discovers. This is something that really should not be put off.
