Avatar m tn My worry is that I will develop alzheimer, dementia, or a level of CTE earlier than those who did not play a sport like American football. I respectfully disagree that playing high school football will not increase your chances of incurring brain damage. https://www.bu.edu/cte/our-research/case-studies/18-year-old/ Here was a case that BU studied from a high school football player. This is this sort of stuff that has been worrying me non-stop for the past week.

Avatar n tn m older? Trust me when I was in high school I loved football with every ounce in my body, I loved to nail people as hard as I could, but now that I've quit playing I deeply regret ever playing, because now all I want to do is be able to grow old and enjoy my family. Hopefully God will bless me, I feel as if he already has in the sense that I decided not to play college football. I hope you make the right choice.
Avatar f tn My 17 year old son, who has always been very active in sports, especially football and basketball was injured two months ago when a pellet went through his chest and eventually ended up lodged in the neck area behind his right ear. Doctors say where it is lodged, it will never move and should not pose any problems at all. He spent three days in the hospital with a collapsed lung and a week out of school.
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for the input at least it gives me another way to go no the doctors never mentioned the post concussion syndrome but I'll check into it however its not just high school football to him its his college choice on the line unfortunatly but his health is more important to me we will see what I can figure out thanks again.
Avatar m tn This was a routine MRI, so we thought, after a concussion. There are only three things this child cares about. 1) Football, 2) Football, and 3) Competitive target shooting. I feel so bad for him. All he has every dreamed about since he was nine was to play in the NFL. Now, how do you tell him that he won't even have a chance too?
973741 tn?1342342773 Ice baths are a thing in the sports world apparently. Both of my sons who are in high school and participate in sports have now had ice baths given to them by the trainer and their assistant. Basically a big tub of you guessed it, ice and water. One participates in distance running and the other soccer. Both get sore. I'm wondering what the benefit of a polar bath would be.
Avatar f tn (A lot of professional sports players, especially football, are finding that concussions they suffered in high school and college have affects on the brain in their forties.) People can also get a hematoma on the brain due to a head injury. A large hematoma would most likely produce symptoms you couldn't ignore, but I would think a small one could give you symptoms but still allow you to function. It could be neither of these things are your problem.
Avatar f tn I suffered a concussion 4 months ago when I fell during a parade with my high school band. My mom took me to the ER and I was diagnosed with a concussion. I had a CT scan and nothing was out of the ordinary, and it seemed to just be a mild concussion. 4 months later, I'm still having issues. I'm a junior in high school and concentration and memory issues made me switch out of all of my honors classes into regular ones and drop both math and science completely.
4296921 tn?1352386232 My son played soccer from K up. He started football as a freshman in high school. The footwork and ball awareness that he learned in soccer really helped him quickly catch up to those kids who had played football.
Avatar f tn Six concussions could be one to many. There is currently a serious issue with respect to football players and concussions in the NFL and their symptoms closely mirror what you indicate. Head bounces from a soccer ball can cause skull bone issues especially for younger individuals. For all of you parents reading this post, make sure your children avoid similar manuvers with a soccer ball.

Avatar m tn It is possible to have post-concussion syndrome for months and even years after the incident. This condition is a complex disorder in which a combination of post-concussion symptoms like headaches, tinnitus and dizziness are experienced. There are no specific treatment for post-concussion syndrome but treatment for the individual symptoms you experience is made by your doctor. Regular follow-up with your doctor is highly recommended. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn From my standpoint your high-school footbasll coah should be criminally prosecuted for not pulling you from the game after the first concussion. Consult your mom or dad about seeing at attorney. You may have a lifetime of problems and the school should eat the medical bills as well as paying for suffering. I can understand why you were not pulled from ther game after the first two incidents, but eight concusions are unaceptable for high-school sports.
725350 tn?1318680468 By the time I was entering high school, I was binge drinking 3 or 4 nights a week. I got to high school and drinking changed from something I had to hide, to something that was "cool" in the eyes of the students there. My grades were average, mostly B's and C's, but my drinking was progressing even further at this point. The first real high school party I went to I got blood alcohol poisoning as a result of drinking the better part of a bottle of Everclear.
Avatar n tn The skull is not entirely smooth on the inside. Multiple concussions as they are finding out with football players can lead to suicidal behavior and anger issues. He's gotta stop doing whatever it is that is causing these concussion. Wish I could tell you better news.
1047946 tn?1332608029 The players that are selected to play in the pro bowl are voted in by coaches, players and fans. They players picked are normally considered the elite players of the league for the season. The pro bowl is a game played that is just for fun. There are a few different rules compared to regular season. They main reason of the changed rules is to protect the players from injury. This is the first year the pro bowl is being played before the Super Bowl.
Avatar m tn About 2 weeks ago I was playing football with my team against another team, I almost got in a fight with one of their players and I insulted another one of their players, I accidently forgot to shake there hand after the game and also I said infront of my team that I will knock the player out, I was trying to look tough. I think of of my players knows a guy on their team but I'm not sure he told them what I said.
Avatar m tn He got a mild concussion in football and was out of the game for 2 weeks (this really made him nervous as his cousin had a severe concussion with lasting brain damage), soon after he healed from the concussion he got swine flu and was out of school the better part of two weeks, shortly after a return to health he got Mono and strep throat (he wasn't fatigued, but had a severe sore throat, pains, and difficulty swallowing). Now he gets scared at school.
Avatar f tn My son also was hit in the head with a baseball bat around the age of 7 that resulted in a mild concussion. He played high school and college football and substained a concussion playing football while in 10th grade. He also broke his ankle playing college footbal which resulted in surgery and a metal plate was fused to his bones to repair his broken ankle. ER doctors think he had a seizure @ the wheel of the car.
Avatar f tn Good morning, My son is complaining of blurry peripheral vision after his football game last night. He said lifted weights lightly this morning and sat down to do homework and noticed that he could see to the sides--that it looked black and blue and he could only see what he focused on. I had already asked him if he had done any heavy lifting this morning and then also asked if he had eaten breakfast yet. He hadn't eaten and was on his way to do so.
Avatar n tn Because I read the sports pages a lot, it sounds like concussion syndrome to me. Football players get it a lot. So while it could be anxiety attacks, you did suffer a concussion. Are you seeing a specialist for that?
Avatar n tn Hi, I am an 18 year old male who is still suffering from the effects of multiple concussions in high school. I had one my junior year, which was not too serious, and the effects of it soon cleared up. However, the next year, I received a violent blow to the head (football again) in which my mouthpiece wasn't in correctly. I was wearing a revolution helmet, the supposedly concussion proof helmets, which cracked all the way down the side from where I got hit.
Avatar m tn Completed the full rehab, fine. Played football very regularly for years after, high intensity a few times a week as well as attending the gym. A year ago I tore my left ACL and had full reconstructive surgery on that. Did full rehab on that, fine. Now I'm playing football again and back at the gym and sometimes - not all the time, I'm feeling some slight discomfort on my right ACL scar which gets painful if I press on it. It's not painful but it's a noticeable discomfort.
Avatar f tn Sorry to say that this is pretty common in vets. Post-concussion syndrome is becoming an issue for the VA and Military. In many cases it is a medical retirement issue for vets within 7 years of separation. He needs to get this documented with the VA. While the brain can heal itself, there are many military and prior service personnel out there that have on going issues related to post-concussion syndrome (some also have a comorbid PTSD.
