8398640 tn?1398042546 s mechanism of action. Tysabri blocks T- lymphocytes from passing across the barrier from the blood into the brain. Tysabri is probably the most effective of all the DMDs discovered to date. So it does correlate with the new findings in the article from the Huffington Post. This does not prove anything, nor does it speak to why the T-cells are drawn to the brain in the first place. Very interesting, Thanks for the info.
2063887 tn?1337829746 I finally figured out that the Copaxone was causing me to have severe migraines so we had to change our plan of action. They wanted me to decide which way to go, but sort of led the discussion towards Tysabri. My original neurologist wanted to start with that as well, but after appealing to the insurance several times they wouldn't approve it. This doctor actually took the time to talk and write down facts about my situation to back up the need.
Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
1831849 tn?1383228392 Something new from the man who developed Tysabri. This talks about repairing/reducing inflammation. http://www.businessweek.
462771 tn?1358355843 Hi Jason, From what you have posted, it seems to me (and I'm not a doctor), that even though you have been and still are on Avonex, apparently you are having "breakthrough disease activity", even while on an interferon. Tysabri is 68% effective at preventing further relapses, slowing the disease process down, and in some patients-even showing symptom improvements. The efficacy's of Avonex, Betaseron, Copaxone, & Rebif are only 34% to 27%, respectively.
Avatar f tn We have a thread here with Tysabri patients discussing their experiences on it. Here is the link: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Multiple-Sclerosis/Tysabri-Users---Past-and-Present/show/1569374?controller=posts&action=show&id=# If for some reason that doesn't work, just put in "Tysabri users past and present" in the search area at the top and you should find it. I go for my 40th infusion tomorrow. Feel free to PM me if there's any way I can help.
Avatar m tn of prednisone being ordered at the time of tysabri due to the action by way tysabri works, and the steriod combo. But, I have not read it. This is one of those things where a doctors orders are called for. Are you scheduled to start infusions?
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of CampralĀ® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
Avatar f tn No daily injections (a constant reminder that I have MS and I have to treat it), the reminants of the syringe in my house, in my fridge, sharps bin in my press. Filling the prescription at the pharmacy. These were all things I wanted to banish as a mechanism to think about having MS a little less.
645390 tn?1338555377 Well, spoke with neuro on phone 2 days ago for over 1/2 hour, she saw me yesterday for about 1/2 hour before my Neuro-Opht. appt. Here is the "final" decision, not really final but a good 90% if everything goes well with insurance... I am going to be starting Tysabri. She is very encouraged with how well I did with the Solu-Medrol this time, that it is even a better indicator of how Tysabri would go. I will be on it for 1 year, then see what is next.
382218 tn?1341181487 Thanks for posting this DV. My favorite part was the mechanism of action for Tecfidera. "Poorly understood...
Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
294425 tn?1288528395 That is an amazingly eloquent discussion of the state of Tysabri from the view of one woman. I felt honored to read it and peek into your psyche as you told us about your (yes, brave) decision. I realize that "brave" must be measured against your choices without Tysabri, but you didn't shrink from the analysis and the decision. We are all rooting for you and glad you are one of us!
147426 tn?1317265632 The Risk of PML is greatest in the setting of a positive J-lymphocytesC virus, greater than 24 months of Tysabri, and concurrent use of other DMD's or steroids. Those are old recommendations, and new info will change them in the (near?) future. PML is caused by the J-C Virus. A little more than half of all people have been infected with the JC virus. It generally lives asymptomatically in the brain unless something has occurred to cause the immunity of the brain to be compromised.
Avatar m tn What is important is whether the antibodies block or neutralize the biologic action of the med that is important. So what your doc is planning makes a lots of sense. Keep us posted. I find it amazing how many of us have swallowing difficulties. Coordination of the swallow is governed by the cranial nerves and MS can hit the cranial nerves hard.
Avatar f tn Next month will be my 8th infusion. It does take about 6 months to get the full effects of Tysabri. I was very concerned about PML & have followed it much. The earliest PML happened was at 8 months for a person using it for Crohns, before it was pulled from the market in 2005. The latest case was after 26 infusions in 2008. I thought I will just start it & not worry about it until I get to that 8 month and decide then.
Avatar f tn Most DMDs do not suppress the immune system Tysabri can make you more suceptible to the JC virus. Gileyna to herpes. The CRABs do not make you more suseptible to illness. They all have different mechanisms to keep your immune system from attacking your T and B cells. Each works differently. Some block the action, some act as decoys, etc. It is confusing. Each person with MS is different. I for one am pretty healthy from infections.
Avatar f tn He suggested TYsabri and I agreed. Tysabri is safe. Your risk of developing PML, the nasty blood disease, is zero if you are negative for the JC Virus. Your doc should test you for it. About LP's, I've had 3. I have had no pain or discofort of any kind associated with any of them. If they are done correctly they do not hurt. If your doctor is giving you a sense of urgency, I would seek a second opinion. Very little about MS is "urgent".

Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
294425 tn?1288528395 This person was previously on Tysabri for 3 years, and was JC positive. There is no information yet as to how long of a wash out period they had before starting Gilenya, how long they were on Gilenya before getting PML, what kind of symptoms they were experiencing, or any info yet about the condition of the patient.
294425 tn?1288528395 After being on Tysabri for a few months, I had about 3 or 4 months of severe hip pain - to the point I had to use a cane. (Neuro felt it was not related to Tysabri, but I found several accounts of the same thing with other users.) I definitely get sick easier than I used to, and it takes longer to get over illnesses. I now have a type of dermatitis on my face, caused by my body being unable to fight off the normal bacteria that is on everyone's skin.
Avatar m tn http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/578705 Ribavirin improves early responses to peginterferon through improved interferon signaling. Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
