Avatar f tn If they are, chances are his worsening memory issues are a result of his refractory epilepsy, although certain medications can make things worse. Epileptic acticity causes scarring of tissue; the hippocampus is unfotuantely very prone to scar as a result of seizures, and is often an onset sight for refractory complex partial seizures, if that is what your brother in law has.
Avatar n tn I had my first Grand Mal about 4 and half years ago. I had an EEG done then and it showed that I had epilepsy. I've had arm jerks upon waking. Well, lately I've been having hand tremors. I got another EEG done and it didn't show any spike in epilepsy problems. A few nights ago I was out with my mom and told her we had to go because I felt funny and was having arm jerks. In the car the jerks just kept coming one right after another. That lasted for hours until we went to the e.r.
Avatar f tn I have been taking several types of medication through the years for my epilepsy I now take topomax and zonogran and limtical. I have a hard time with my memory staying focused I feel like I am loosing my mind sometimes. Has anyone else had the same side effects?
Avatar m tn I have had a normal MRI and CT. New doctor thinks it could be a form of epilepsy, but ( Thank Goodness) had refused to settle with that as a dignosis until after blood work, EEG, new MRI, and possibly PET scan. My problem has been 3 yrs of drs diagnosing with no poof. I believe the epilepsy is not my issue since while treating me for migranes, cause by Wellbutrin, they tried several siezure meds.....which sent me to the ER one night with the worst migrane ever.
Avatar f tn About a month before or around the same time my memory problems started, there was a period of 2 months where my epilepsy got extremely bad. I was having grand mal seizures twice a week and was always exhausted, but after 2 months I decided to raise my medication dosage on my own because I couldn't function normally and no one would help me with my medication.
471949 tn?1236904026 Hi JKJ, I have a similar case of frontal lobe epilepsy with similar pattern of seizures occurring only during sleep, a male patient, 14 years of age, who has been on oxcarbazepine i.e Trileptal ( oxrate here in India) for the last few months and we did observe disturbances in his memory. The episodes of memory disturbances increased as we increased the dose, but it wasn’t so worse as in the first instance. We already tried Tegretol (carbamazepine) for him and it didn’t work.
Avatar m tn There have been some reports of memory loss and disturbance of other cognitive functions including alertness following Carbamazepine (Tegretol) use. The effect of the seizure focus in the frontal lobe can't be denied. The two combined together may be responsible for the memory loss.
Avatar n tn There are a couple of practical things emergency staff do when assessing the degree of head trauma a person has had following concussion - one is called GSC scale - where they ask a series of questions that reveal how orientated you are - goes up to 15. &/15 is severe, above 13 is mild and the middle scores are moderate. They usually do this asap after losing consciousness and then repeat it until you have no problems with the answers.
Avatar n tn 5 mm larger, (Ophthalmic exam was normal) but it has been 10 weeks and she still has short-term memory problems. Her memory is getting better. At first she couldn't remember going to work the day before or anything she had studied for a test, but now she just can't remember things people say to her, appointments she makes, etc. As an example, we can remind her repeatedly of an upcoming event and then on the day of the event, she won't remember anything about the event.
1653487 tn?1303524162 if you have not had epilepsy for very long, and are just trying to confirm the diagnosis of what types of seizures you have, where seizures are originating in the brain, and if it involves more than one area. For others who have had refractory epilepsy for some time, i.e.
737986 tn?1232298635 Hi, Yes from your post the possibility of petit mal epilepsy seems likely. Although this type of epilepsy occurs mostly in children, adults have also been known to suffer from this condition. I would suggest you to discuss this possibility with his treating doctor and get his EEG test done. EEG will help in confirming the diagnosis.
Avatar f tn I had my surgery about 11 years ago and with each passing year I have noticed that my memory and other symptoms such as sever neck and shoulder pain and other problems get worse with each passing year. All I get from doctors is pain meds, that only make me sleepy (one of my other problems is I'm constantly sleepy) that I don't want. Has anyone had ANY problems after surgery??? Please help! I feel like I'm going crazy!!!
Avatar f tn There are different types of epilepsy with different characteristics like grand mal epilepsy you have tonic clonic generalized muscle contractions, frothing, unconsciousness, twitches, metal confusion, some may lose bladder and bowel control, usually preceded by an aura of impending seizure. aura is a strange feeling of muscle stiffening, hearing weird sounds, smelling strange smells etc. absence seizure manifest as brief staring spells where the person is cut off from the surroundings.
Avatar m tn If the seizure arises weeks to months after injury, it is referred to as posttraumatic epilepsy. The frequency of these seizure types tend to decrease with time. The treatment is accomplished with a single antiepileptic medication, if clinically indicated. It is important to remember that every medicine has risks and benefits. If a cortical scar for the epileptic focus is present on MRI and the seizures are not controlled with medications, surgical resection may be an option.
Avatar n tn t remember what year he was born in. I have no memory of some conversations, even after I am told about the specific conversation. I've spoken to my family and asked if they thought I was having memory problems. Surprise! Most gave a definitive YES. I'm just not sure if this could be seizure related or not. I've used up my allotted office visits covered by insurance for the year but definitely plan on making an appt. with my neurologist first thing in 2009. Until then...
1328714 tn?1294578263 Thank you for the advice, I'l ask my doctor about it next time I see him. I've checked the tegretol leaflet and I couldn't see memory loss obviously on the leaflet although if i remember correctly there was a small section on the leaflet referenced it. I forgot that the frontal lode was related to the memory.... If you don't mind me asking, what type of epilepsy do you have? I'm very new to the topic of epilepsy, but now I have it I'm quite interested in it.
Avatar f tn I have been on medication (encorate chrono-1000mg, 800mg, 500mg) since the last 12 yrs 4 JME. in the last 1-1/2 yrs i had complete seizure and passed out twice. last was a month back. was prescribed combination of encorate crono 300 mg twice a day and lobazam 10 mg once night time. i was forever tired and sleepy after d medication and so the dosage of lobazam was reduced to 5mg.
Avatar m tn If all brain related causes (transient ischemic attack, disorders of hypothalamus, dementia and multiple sclerosis, head injury etc) are ruled out then Vit B12 deficiency, chronic fatigue syndrome, sleep disorders (by sleep studies), depression, use of certain drugs, and certain types of seizures (where memory loss is the predominant symptom) should be investigated for as the cause of memory loss.
Avatar m tn neurologists are pretty pathetic when it comes to epilepsy, unfortunately) about an inhospital surgical workup, find out if your son is a possible surgical candidate. Continued seizures can lead to scarring of normal brain tissue and permanent memory problems, and the formation of new seizure focuses in the areas surrounding the tumor, i.e. a worsening of the seizures. At that point, if you go in and only have the tumor removed, chances are his seizures will not be controlled.
Avatar f tn I am a Type 1 Diabetic, with serious vision problems, but healthy eyes. Just had an intake with a new optometrist this morning - no signs of optic neuritis, or macular degeration, healthy retina, vessels all look good. Need a prescription adjustment, different rimless frames to help improve my peripheral vision (which is poor) and a pinkish tint to help with the difficulty I'm having reading and watching tv/computer use.
Avatar f tn short periods of blackout or confused memory; occasional "fainting spells" in which bladder or bowel control is lost with extreme fatigue; episodes of blank staring; brief periods of no response to questions or instructions;dazed behavior; being unable to talk or communicate for a short time; repeated movements that look out of place or unnatural; sudden fear, anger or panic for no reason; odd changes in the way things look, sound, smell or feel; or muscle jerks of arms, legs or bod
7486852 tn?1410352184 I am curious if anyone else has problems like nerve damage, headaches/migranes, pressure feeling in the back of head, pain in temples, vision and concentration/memory problems, chronic pain/fatigue/weakness, muscles spasms all over randomly, neck pain and stiffness, and burning or shocking sensation going down the back of neck to spine, pressure feelings sometimes shocking sharp pains in chest and in lower ribcages.
577118 tn?1233250750 t working to curb my panic attacks or depression problems. It gave me random fainting spells, so my doctor had me wean myself off of it. Around the same time, I don't recall exactly when, I started having seizures and was diagnosed with epilepsy. I have suffered from what I consider serious short-term memory loss. I have actually lost chunks of time.
Avatar f tn I have been experiencing seizure like symptoms but when you look up the different types of seizures and you look up their symptoms online. I do not fall under any category I fall under many categories but the fact that I have a lapse in memory loss I have twitching in parts of my limbs that are completely random sometimes I have a sensation of sweat and heat. so the new symptom is that I get Goosebumps so my hair stands up on end very frequently. I suffer from migraines.
Avatar n tn My TSH was last tested in October 2008 and was 1.17 - from what I understand this is practically an optimal TSH and I should feel great. I don't have a thyroid disorder, though it runs in my family (3 members of my immediate family as well as several relatives.
