One can typically prevent type 2 diabetes by lifestyle choices of proper weight, exercise and eating habits. This is considered non insulin diabetes. With type 2 diabetes, blood sugar is too high. The body doesn't make insulin well anymore or use it well. It's usually slow developing and can be reversed.

I just realized that I haven't seen my diabetes specialist in about three years. On my last visit she "discharged" me to the care of my internist. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 5 years ago, at age 62. My glucose levels are stable at around 110, hB!ac 5.9. I've recently lost 25 kg, do some mild exercise and feel good.
I'm taking metformin twice a day (750 mg).
Hi. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is different from type 1 diabetes, which isn't reversible. Type 2 can generally be reversed by changing your diet and getting plenty of exercise. The reason is that type 2 is caused by the body not being able to absorb or use the insulin it creates.
Besides being overweight which is the most common reason, there's a lot of other reasons that may cause diabetes type 2. Another thing is age, the older you get, the chance are bigger you can get diabetes.

it is good you went to the dr when you did. You may wish to ask your Dr if he will test you for type 1 diabetes, which you may possibly have given your age and how high your sugars were. If it is type 1 diabetes, you will need to continue taking insulin rather than oral meds.
Please learn as much as you can about diabetes. It is managed through diet, exercise and medications (insulin and/or oral).
Although there's no cure for type 2 diabetes, studies show it's possible for some people to reverse it. Through diet changes and weight loss, you may be able to reach and hold normal blood sugar levels without medication.
This doesn't mean you're completely cured. Type 2 diabetes is an ongoing disease.
For this reason Type 1 is considered more serious but both are treatable and controlable so that the person may live a relatively or almost completely normal life. It is always possible to go from Type 2 diabtes to Type 1 Diabetes but never the reverse. Many times a Type 2 Diabetic will be treated as a Type 1 (on the same medications etc) but will not actually BE a Type 1. My nephew got type 2 diabetes which got diagnosed when he was admitted to hospital last week. He is 25 years and obese BMI is 29, overweight. He was not active and was lazy so far, he is asking everyone that how long he will be alive ;). Wanted to check if anyone has idea how long one can live by regular exercise and diet without medication? His sugar level with fasting is 129. PPBS is 130. Please let me know if anyone of you have got diabetes when you were 20's and controlling with diet.
