Avatar n tn Although there's no cure for type 2 diabetes, studies show it's possible for some people to reverse it. Through diet changes and weight loss, you may be able to reach and hold normal blood sugar levels without medication. This doesn't mean you're completely cured. Type 2 diabetes is an ongoing disease.
Avatar f tn Hi. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is different from type 1 diabetes, which isn't reversible. Type 2 can generally be reversed by changing your diet and getting plenty of exercise. The reason is that type 2 is caused by the body not being able to absorb or use the insulin it creates.
Avatar f tn I just realized that I haven't seen my diabetes specialist in about three years. On my last visit she "discharged" me to the care of my internist. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 5 years ago, at age 62. My glucose levels are stable at around 110, hB!ac 5.9. I've recently lost 25 kg, do some mild exercise and feel good. I'm taking metformin twice a day (750 mg).
Avatar n tn Some people are able to control Type 2 diabetes with losing and maintaining healthy weight, lowering carb intake and regular exercise. Some are not, and need medication. It is impossible to answer your question because every diabetic is different and it would depend on how high your numbers were to begin with and what you ate and did. Serious consequences (complications) from diabetes don't occur in 24 hours, they occur over time spent at high numbers.
Avatar m tn Hi, I am a type 2 diabetic as well. When I do have soda it is always diet. I never noticed any increased levels in my blood glucose levels tho. Try one for a day or two, monitor your levels and see if they affect anything. Something that I do is look at the lables when I am not sure if something is ok for me. When you do this compare the lables from a diet soda to a regular soda and see what they look like, this will pretty much give you a answer as well.

Avatar f tn m wondering if the OP meant when should a diabetic begin using meds to manage blood sugar? If so, some people are able to manage Type 2 diabetes with just diet and exercise and this should always be the first approach. If you are able to maintain target range blood sugars this way, great! Just continue testing periodically to make sure it is still working, and to see how certain foods affect your blood sugar.

Avatar n tn Low carb diet is absolutely the best way to manage diabetes. American Diabetes Association is now also recognizing this. By low carb we mean about 20 - 30 g of carbs per day. Protein should be adequate (can be up to 1.5g/ kg body weight), and healthy unprocessed fats (avoid vegetable oils) for energy balance. HEalthy fats include the fats that come with meats and full fat dairy, nuts, avocado etc.

Avatar m tn I have recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, my fasting blood sugar was 175. I am sure that these are on the higher side of the scale. My doctor adviced me to go retest after 2 weeks of exercise and strict diet control. Hence i completely changed my diet, no sugar, substantial decrease of carbs, relying on vegetables and sprouts or protein contents with additon to the 5-6 KM of walking. After two weeks when i went on re test, it was 140 on fasting. I have not used any medicine.

Avatar f tn a few years ago, I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type II. I do weigh more than the average teenager but I am not what doctors would term as over-weight. My problem is, I am not on any medication of any kind. The only medication i recieved from my doctor was 6 years ago, and it only assisted in heloping me lose weight. Is this normal? Is it possible/normal that I can survive and beat this illness by simply sticking to my diet? any clarification on this will be muvh appreciated. Thank you.
Avatar n tn Hello Candikane, Your doctor's advice is surprising to me, also. I'm guessing that s/he is not a diabetes specialist and that's the type of physician who should be guiding your diabetes care. Specialists might be called endocrinologist or diabetologist. None of us here is a physician, but we're long-time diabetics or care-givers for diabetic children. You didn't mention if you've been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2, and the treatment options vary for these types.
